After only 24 hours in office, President Trump has already passed several executive orders. What do you think of his day 1 actions?

Donald Trump began signing a slew of executive orders soon after taking the oath as president Monday, looking to quickly implement his agenda, with his plans including declaring a national emergency on the U.S.-Mexico border, ordering construction on his border wall to resume, and terminating diversity programs in federal agencies.

Have you taken your place on the wall?

The first order he signed before a crowd at the Capital One Arena revoked approximately 80 executive actions that had been signed by former President Joe Biden. He also signed a freeze on new regulations, as well as a hiring freeze on federal workers. And Trump also withdrew — again — from the Paris climate treaty. …

The orders are part of a broad plan that’s expected to include more than 50 items in total signed by the new president following his inauguration, as he seeks a quick Day 1 start. …

Other orders his team has said he’d sign by the end of the day include a directive to bring an end to birthright citizenship, transition officials told reporters in a call ahead of the actions Monday.

Birthright citizenship has been understood to be required under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

Democrats and some legal groups have vowed to challenge in court any Trump attempt to do away with birthright citizenship. …

Immigration overhaul

Trump’s other executive orders on immigration would reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy from his first administration for those seeking to enter the U.S. through Mexico, while another is set to designate cartels and migrant gangs, specifically MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. …

Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the border would allow the Defense Department to deploy the U.S. military and the National Guard to the border. …

Reversing diversity initiatives

Not all of the executive orders are about border and immigration policy. One is set to do away with diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the federal government. …

Another order will say it’s the policy of the U.S. to recognize two sexes — male and female — including on all government documents such as passports and visas. …

Reforms — and cuts — for government workers

As had been previously announced, Trump will also sign an order creating the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which will have a mission of cutting government spending, according to Karoline Leavitt, the incoming White House press secretary. …

On Trump’s agenda as well is an order reimplementing “Schedule F,” an executive order that strips job protections from nonpolitical career officials in policy roles throughout the federal bureaucracy. The move makes it significantly easier for a president to fire them. …

Another order would require more federal workers to return to work in person.

Name changes

He’s also signing another order changing the name of Alaska’s Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, back to Mount McKinley. …

From Axios. President Trump signed an executive order during his first hours in office to begin the process of pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement — the second time he has done so. …

Zoom in: It takes a year for a country to withdraw from the agreement.

• The Paris Agreement doesn’t require countries to cut their emissions, but works through international peer pressure and countries’ domestic laws to encourage nations to set ambitious emissions reduction targets.

Under former President Biden, the U.S. had committed to the voluntary goal of cutting emissions economy-wide by 61% to 66% below 2005 levels by 2035. …

• Prior to signing the order, the incoming Trump administration described this and other actions on energy as a way to end former Biden’s “climate extremism.”

Flashback: The U.S. has been here before. Trump pulled the country out of Paris during his first term, only to have former President Biden rejoin the pact on his first day. …

The intrigue: Trump has long characterized the agreement as putting too much burden on the U.S. compared to other countries.
