Is it Revival or Deception?
Are we quenching the Holy Spirit or being deceived?
The Church has struggled with these questions for two thousand years, and as saints over the centuries have learned, there are often no easy answers. It can take time for the true nature of events to be revealed, for the true character of its participants to emerge, and for the true fruit of the Holy Spirit to become evident.
Since the events of Asbury have unfolded, and The Chosen and Jesus Revolution launched, we’ve been hearing voices from all over the spectrum: “A great revival is breaking out!” “No! It’s deception!” “Yes, it’s real!” “No, the people are sinners!” And etc., etc.
What’s a Christian to believe? How do we discern?
Carefully.
The Lord saved us in 1976 amid a powerful revival in the Pacific Northwest in what many would consider a most unlikely place—a liberal Episcopal church in Oregon with very liberal pastors and an active gay community who proudly referred to themselves as the “once-born” and the “frozen chosen.” Yet God chose it to save Linda from a scheduled hysterectomy by miraculously healing her of uterine cancer and then bringing us to new life in Christ.
Ignorant of everything Christian, we plunged into the life of that church. Yet, despite much false teaching and open acceptance of sin, The Book of Common Prayer and the church’s daily liturgy still promoted the Bible and the historical teachings of the 16th-century Reformation. The Holy Spirit thus slowly sanctified us through those powerful influences and the help of some godly people who took us under their wing. After several years, He moved us to another state, and we lost touch.
Ten years later, Richard graduated from seminary, and the Lord moved us back to Oregon for a time. There we met an Episcopal minister who turned out to have been an interim minister at that church where God saved us. We listened with awe as he shared how the fire of the Holy Spirit had fallen after we left. The liberal pastors were all gone, along with about two-thirds of the congregation, leaving the remaining one-third humbled and hungry for God’s Word, which he had taught them.
Over the years since then, we’ve been involved in several churches wrestling with the Holy Spirit working to bring revival, and sad to say, both closed down rather than yield to the Spirit’s moving and corrections. We’ve learned to be very careful in deciding too soon what is real revival, who will respond, and who is “really” saved or beyond redemption–and just what the Holy Spirit might or might not do. Practically all of Paul’s Epistles focus on correction because even in the midst of that great awakening in the early church, there was much that needed correction. We are a sinful, stiff-necked people and can expect the same need of correction in our day. So let’s keep trying to test and discern spirits, teachings, and behaviors, but humbly and while manifesting Christ’s love.
PRAYING INTO REVIVAL. Whatever is happening needs a lot of prayer. We with many others long for real soul-changing, nation-changing revival, so we’d like to recommend an excellent prayer guide from Intercessors for America called “Praying Into Revival.” You can download it free here. Here are the guide’s key points:
KEY PRAYER POINTS:
- When God moves, expect opposition. Pray for protection. The devil will stir up trouble.
- Avoid divisions and foolish quarrels.
- Pray that Christians will discern man-made and/or demonic works, and that church leaders would resist trying to sustain (or resist) revival in their own flesh.
- Pray for long duration and good and lasting fruit. John 12:32
- Don’t be a spectator — be active. Share the Gospel.
- Jesus is CENTRAL. Keep your eyes fixed on Him. “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (John 12:32)
- Pray for unity in the churches wherever this revival is experienced. Matt. 6:33
- Pray for the practical concerns.
- May this move be known by no one name, denomination, or people group.
- Pray for wisdom, strength, and strategy for leaders to meet and address ongoing needs.
- Pray for those who carry the fire of revival. John 4:41-42
May God help us all to humbly cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

Amen! Thank you for addressing these things. Sadly, many in the church don’t want to hear them when you point them out. We need discernment more than ever in the days we’re living in. Too many are being led astray and led by “feelings” instead of God’s word. I pray more people come to the true Jesus Christ of Nazareth and leave these false doctrines behind. There’s only salvation through Christ Jesus and not a Jesus that people have created in their minds. We need to line everything up with God’s word t know the truth.
NO MORE CANAANITES IN THE HOUSE OF G-D!
G-D’s judgment begins with His people
Before He starts judging the world.
Materialism and compromise
Are the two sins in G-D’s House unfurled.
Today, many professing Christians
Are for the most part, running scared.
Compromise has been the pressing issue;
Doctrinal truth is no longer shared.
Holy reverence for the House of G-D
Has been forgotten or tossed aside.
Avarice, adultery, idolatry,
Even sodomy now there abides.
Rejecting the whole of G-D’s Holy Word,
Even downplaying the “virgin birth”
And denying the deity of Jesus,
They’ve truly bastardized salvation’s worth.
What’s even worse, they’ve now joined hands
With all religions from every place.
Assuming that all roads lead to G-D,
They’ve literally slapped Him in the face.
Released this day is a brief word of warning:
Let all who have spiritual ears to hear
What G-D’s Spirit is saying to His people,
“Repent, cry aloud with all godly fear!
“How long will you halt between two opinions?
How long will you stand upon unholy sod?
Return, return, return O’ My people!
No more Canaanites in the House of G-D!
This is navel gazing. What it is now will be made plain later. Let us pray for workers in the harvest fields and mended nets to hold all the fish. Let us call the fish into the nets. Let the gatekeepers keep their foot in the door and intercede with the fervor of Moses that the door to the ark not close until all those redeemed from the foundation of the earth are saved. Let the watchmen warn of what they see and hear.
I too was saved in a cult. HS was active in prompting friends to pray for me and introduce me to His Word. That Word did not return void – I have loved and followed my Lord Jesus for over 30 years. Pray for the lost and speak/read the Word to them. By their fruit you will know them – HS does it, not us.
People watching the movie Jesus Revolution people are giving their lives to Christ. When this actually happened 1000 people were coming to the Lord in a week. Lord bring more !! To You 🙌🏻
This is one reason to read our bibles and know what it says. Believe in Jesus as the Word. Ask for discernment from the Holy Spirit to what the word is saying. The Word of God is alive and powerful. When Jesus was being tempted by Satan, Jesus quoted scripture. If we are reading, praying and getting familiar with how God works, the counterfeit will stick out like a sore thumb. We will get a nudge of sorts to know when something is off. By their fruit we will know them. There are many who go to church that are not really saved. We need to ask for God to help us, to make an self examination to make sure we are of the faith. He is coming soon. We need to pray for everyone to be ready, to repent if there is anything between them and God.
reminds me of the parable of the “wheat and the weeds” where the farmer told the workers to let both grow up together until the harvest because not until then could they be told apart and separated. Besides, a lot of “weeds” might become “wheat” due to hanging out with the other wheats and because of God’s miraculous, transforming power. We are to “be wise as serpents, harmless as doves” and use our God given wisdom, but I’m glad God is the judge, not me. I don’t have His perfect powers of wisdom and discernment. “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7) I will do my best to “fix my eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of my faith” so that I might not be led astray by any movement of man. But where God is at work, I certainly want to join in! Lord give me Your wisdom to know the difference and to follow only where You lead me. http://www.mtothe5th.wordpress.com
Excellent prayer points in this article. May the Lord bless this couple and continue to use them for His glory.
Father, I was deeply grieved, that some who called themselves by your name, thought the Asbury revival among college students was false! Repentance and hunger for you are earmarks of revival! Hurl down this division in JESUS name! Your presence cannot be fabricated by Satan! He is not equal with you, Oh Lord of hosts! Peace that passes understanding, deliverance from hard heartedness , and healing from years of pain ARE NOT SATAN’s work! Pain , division, judging and a critical ,accusing spirit are from the enemy. Keep your true saints close to you , Lord, hungering for more of you , night and day, and day and night! Stop the body from speaking against itself, in Jesus name!!!
I wish we could all have Michael W. Smith as our worship leader at church:))
What a beautiful job he does bringing life, Spirit and Truth to his worship!!
This is a much needed topic to be addressed for the Glory of God! Since I became saved 30 years ago I have experienced many different church denominations. I’m always looking and hoping that the leaders will be more sensitive to the Spirit than their own agendas. I have heard man clearly criticize what I believe was a move of the Spirit during Sunday worship. Did David want attention when he danced before the Lord? No! He loved the Lord and wanted to sing and dance. It’s called responding. A RELATIONSHIP!!!
Should God be in a box each week?
Heavenly Father make us mindful and trusting that You have given our church leaders and Your children the right to embrace and respond alone and in unity to the glorious guide and counselor, the Holy Spirit, to move within us and among us. If it is in peace, in praise, in prayer and in great hope of blessing You and our families to a more heavenly worship and healing of mind, body and soul…BRING IT ON!!
A consuming fire be present. HAVE YOUR WAY!! Let us not be worried and do nothing with Your power because we are fearful and afraid!
We are forgiven and free!!
Let’s follow that mindset into our worship each week. In SPIRIT and in TRUTH!
In Jesus’ powerful name,
Amen
