The release of newly declassified documents comes as leadership changes at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and debates continue over the government’s handling of the pandemic and subsequent investigations.

From Fox News:

Gabbard’s release contains newly declassified documents that show intelligence officials considered but ultimately rejected Fauci as an outside reviewer of their COVID-19 origins assessment, warning he would be seen as having a conflict of interest.

In a different exchange, intelligence officials tasked with analyzing the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic debated whether to take Fauci’s recommendations on who to interview for their study.

A CIA whistleblower previously claimed that Fauci exerted undue influence over the intelligence community’s assessment of COVID-19’s origins, claims that Gabbard now seeks to amplify with her release.

The newly released documents reportedly include internal communications among intelligence officials conducting the Biden administration’s 90-day review of COVID-19’s origins. According to the records, officials discussed whether Fauci should be consulted and whether recommendations he made regarding potential interview subjects should be incorporated into the review process.

Some intelligence personnel expressed concerns that Fauci’s involvement could create the appearance of a conflict of interest given his prominent public role during the pandemic and the ongoing debate over the lab-leak theory. Others argued that Fauci’s extensive scientific expertise made him a valuable resource whose recommendations should be considered as part of a comprehensive investigation.

The release arrives amid renewed scrutiny of the federal government’s response to COVID-19 and questions about U.S. funding connected to coronavirus research in Wuhan, China. For years, critics have argued that public health officials and government agencies were too quick to dismiss the possibility that the virus originated from a laboratory accident. Defenders of Fauci have maintained that scientific assessments evolved as more information became available and that decisions were based on the evidence available at the time.

The timing is also notable because of ongoing uncertainty surrounding the leadership of the intelligence community. With Director Gabbard stepping down to care for her husband during his cancer treatment, the White House and Senate remain at odds over the confirmation of her successor. President Trump’s nominee, Jay Clayton, has faced delays in the confirmation process, while federal housing official Bill Pulte is expected to serve in an interim capacity.

For many Americans, the questions surrounding COVID-19’s origins remain unresolved years after the pandemic began. Gabbard’s final document release is likely to fuel further calls for transparency and accountability regarding the government’s pandemic response and the intelligence community’s investigation into how the virus emerged.
