Bible Passages Could Soon Be Required Reading in Texas Schools

A proposed seventh-grade reading list reportedly includes passages from the Book of Jonah, the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel, the story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis, and Chapter 3 of the Book of Lamentations. – The Daily Signal
The board is expected to hold a preliminary vote on this proposal in April, with a final vote planned to take place in June. If approved, the changes would take effect in 2030 across Texas.
Other age-based selections include stories such as the ‘Parable of the Prodigal Son’ for first grade, the ‘Road to Damascus’ for third grade, and books including Ecclesiastes and the Book of Job for high school English classes.
This proposal follows a 2023 Texas law requiring the state education agency to recommend at least one Bible reading per grade level from kindergarten through 12th grade.
To develop the list, the State Board of Education gathered input from thousands of teachers and compiled a broader set of about 300 literary works, including both biblical passages and classic literature.
Scripture has shaped Western civilization’s understanding of morality, justice, and human purpose, and many believe students benefit from exposure to these foundational texts, whether for literary or historical understanding.
For believers, this represents an opportunity for truth to be acknowledged in spaces that have long excluded it.
From a Christian worldview, this moment underscores the importance of wisdom in shaping the next generation.
When Scripture is introduced in educational settings, it opens doors for students to encounter God’s Word in formative years, potentially planting seeds of understanding that can bear fruit later in life. Let’s pray this proposal would be implemented, and that it would change hearts and minds in schools across the Lone Star State!

Thank you Father for this proposal. This is part of our heritage. Those who come here with a different belief should not be able to derail our country from learning about our beginnings and how the Bible was part of it! And still is. May this proposal go into all our nation’s schools.
There are ways for the Bible to be taught in a literary, overarching sense…But it’s not just public school kids, but ALL of us, including Christian adults who could use a refresher on what it means to have a “Biblical” worldview.
The “Left Behind” and “Late Great Planet” Rapture-ready stuff had NO bearing on the worldviews of those who helped establish our nation. Western Civilization was not founded on “Left Behind” it was founded on “The City of God” written by Saint Augustine.
We need less cartoonish theology and Youtube prophets, and revive intellectually curious and scholarly Christianity.
Amen, and let it not take four more years. This is enlightening Scripture, and it could be all the more powerful to simply read it cover to cover. More than any other book, the Bible is divine even in the order it is written for us to read. Starting children off with a desire to read source materials from their beginning, and not needing any guide to point to what others think is important, is a likewise important discipline that can be instilled and be the beginning of the most thorough academic approach to any material.
My Sunday school taught me songs like “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world.” Values like: “The golden rule: love thy neighbor” and “Pray for bad people, Jesus died for them.” And: “Bring canned goods to feed the poor.”
But then you hear Evangelicals including within IFA, and you would think a whole generation of American Sunday schools were preaching jihad & warmongering. Someone says so much as “pray for peace” and their blood boils. Someone says “feed the poor” and they’re automatically a raging communist…
So great, Texas: teach the Bible. Which one though, remains to be seen…Which Jesus will you preach?
Yes!
Heavenly Father, please bless this move to include Your Truth in reading lists in Texas public schools. Let other States follow suit!
