Flock Safety is highlighting cases in which its automated license plate readers have helped law enforcement find missing children and identify suspects. But as the company’s camera network expands across the country, critics are asking whether a tool designed to improve public safety is also creating an unprecedented system for tracking Americans’ movements.

Flock Safety is touting emotional stories about automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) helping rescue children as concerns about the dangers of mass surveillance grow.
Rahul Sidhu, Flock’s chief strategy officer, posted a video on X Tuesday featuring moving clips of police rescuing missing children.
The video begins with 911 audio of a distraught woman telling the operator that her son had been kidnapped. It also includes clips that purport to show law enforcement rescuing a six-year-old nonverbal boy, finding a 14-month-old baby, and saving a two-year-old boy who asks, “Where’s my mom?”
Flock Safety has grown into a major provider of automated license plate reader technology used by law enforcement agencies around the country. Its cameras capture passing vehicles and can identify characteristics beyond a license plate, including a vehicle’s make, model, bumper stickers, bike racks, dents, and scratches. That information can then be used to create what the company calls a “Vehicle Fingerprint.”
The technology can provide investigators with valuable information quickly. Flock CEO Garrett Langley recently said that in a single day the company’s cameras generated alerts involving thousands of registered sex offenders, stolen vehicles and wanted individuals, as well as 158 missing people or children. Flock says searches of its system are logged, require justification, and can be audited.
But the scale of the network has prompted concerns about how much information is being collected on people who are not suspected of crimes. Because cameras routinely photograph vehicles as they travel through communities, information about ordinary drivers can become part of a searchable database available to participating law enforcement agencies.
Those concerns are now being tested in court. Kansas resident Mason Grimmett, represented by the Kansas Justice Institute, has sued the city of Wichita over its use of the cameras. His lawsuit alleges the system enables authorities to continuously track and compile information about law-abiding residents without obtaining warrants or establishing probable cause or reasonable suspicion.
Previous cases involving law enforcement officers have added urgency to the debate over safeguards. Former Kansas police chief Lee Nygaard reportedly acknowledged using the Flock system repeatedly to locate vehicles associated with his former girlfriend and her boyfriend. In another case, former Kansas police officer Victor Heiar was convicted of computer crime and stalking after using the database to track his estranged wife.
Political opposition is also growing. Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs, a Republican, has warned that increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence, networking, and data-retention capabilities could turn license plate readers into a “warrantless mass surveillance system.” Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., meanwhile, has drafted legislation intended to place restrictions on the government’s use of surveillance technology.
The constitutional questions surrounding this technology are likely to become more important as artificial intelligence makes it possible to collect, connect, and search enormous amounts of information. License plate readers can undoubtedly assist law enforcement in finding kidnapped children, recovering stolen vehicles, and locating dangerous suspects. The question is whether government can reap those benefits without creating the infrastructure to monitor innocent Americans on a massive scale.
Scripture recognizes government’s legitimate responsibility to restrain wrongdoing and protect the innocent, but Americans also enjoy constitutional protections intended to restrain government itself. As surveillance technology becomes increasingly powerful, let’s pray that our leaders have wisdom to protect both public safety and the liberties that distinguish a free society.

These cameras might be good for some purposes but if they fall into the wrong hands then we will be in danger and more crimes will increase. There must be other ways or new technology that can be used to help victims and children. Law abiding citizens should not pay for the wrong doings of criminals.
The Flock Cameras are pure evil. Every thing that comes along like this are just bringing us one step closer to the Mark of the Beast. AI technology is, quite frankly, very scary. If it is to be used in an appropriate way, then there need to be regulations built in. The world that we live in needs to be cognizant of the potential ability to gain information in an inappropriate fashion, one that infringes upon our civil liberties. Lord Jesus, please, by Your omnipotent grace and mercy, please cause these technological “advances” that will strip us of our liberties to be reigned in. Thank You Lord.
The issue is lawlessness. We need a nationwide revival, not just a renewal movement. Otherwise, due to all the crime, people will demand increasingly restrictive/invasive measures so that they will feel safe. And yes, such systems can be massively leveraged in the wrong hands. We need to turn to God to such an extent that crime (especially violent crime) starts to decrease. Then people will also have more courage to stand up and demand a stop to warrantless mass surveillance and data collection.
As always, Jesus is our Hope and Strength: our very present help in time of trouble. We must make much of Him, and trust in and ask for His protection, rather than asking government to protect us in ways that only He can truly do..
Father, I pray for wisdom for our leaders in deciding about these cameras and for judges to have wisdom in making decisions about them. Protect us. May your mercy and grace be on our nation for protection for the children.
The highways of America are much more dangerous today than they were 25 years ago. Speed limits are ignored, as well as stop signs and red lights. I don’t think cameras should replace police vehicles monitoring drivers. You don’t see many police vehicles any more. That’s wrong.
If you can turn these on and off electronically and only in the area of a crime scene, then maybe. but I have seen firsthand what can happen when corrupt LEO and corrupt judges abuse their power.
In my opinion, at this point in time the “Cameras” are needed. The Democrat Communists are attempting to start another Civil War and overthrow the United States Government.
Once this threat is diminished, the cameras should be removed.

I think it’s the beginning of spying on us. It sounded good, but you’re breaking the law with our constitution. This is what China and other places do we want our Freedom!
I agree with the article that these Flock cameras can be useful in detecting criminal activities, but the danger of using them in the wrong way is very real. That should be a red flag to rethink this system.
According to your article, it appears the wrong people are being punished. The police officers who used the system wrongly should be punished, not the hundreds of children that could be saved by the technology. It seems to only take 2-3 “bad apples” to cause people to want to “throw the baby out with the bath water”.
We have already seen how this will work. When honest godly people are in charge things work as intended almost all the time. But when evil people are in charge the opposite is true they use it against all who disagree with their evil agenda. We seen this in clinton’s admin, obama’s admin, and biden’s admin. Each admin abused our rights more than the previous. Their only goal was to eliminate or punish those that oppose their agenda. The democrats aka democratic socialist aka demoncrats agenda is to get rid of our God given constitution and God. They want total control of everyone and everything. The roads in which they are recording are public space and the government needs to protect these spaces and the people in it. If you do not wish to be recorded you can avoid these areas. With the proper restrictions and oversight this is a good tool in the hands of righteous people.
You can’t avoid these cameras. They are being put up all around us. They are part of the coming beast system that is being created. They are mass surveillance along with phones, tablets, smart devices, etc. End times prophecies happening before our eyes. Maranatha.

I believe our freedom is incremently and slowly being eroded away with these cameras and systems. They are sold as being a security measure and for public safety which sounds good and helpful on the surface. The unfortunate side is the government entities can monitor and track you and they can be a Huge revenue maker with violations of all kinds being handed out. So subtly BIG BROTHER will be getting bigger. I believe a figure in the past and who became a dictator and the head of a country he turned into a police state said ( as he disarmed the citizens) ” I’m here to protect you “. So so we better be careful.

Your cell phone tracks all of your movements via GPS. If someone wants to know where you have been, all they have to do is look at your phone data.

The flock safety surveillance system is totally dependent on AI technology and is integrated with it. Without AI it wouldn’t work.
