Newly released text messages from Dr. Anthony Fauci’s government-issued cellphone are raising fresh questions about what federal health officials discussed privately while encouraging pregnant women to receive COVID-19 vaccines. In one January 2021 exchange, Fauci acknowledged a theoretical concern that fever and a strong inflammatory response following a second vaccine dose could be associated with first-trimester miscarriage.

The second coronavirus jab could be theoretically associated with miscarriage in the first trimester, Anthony Fauci admitted in a text on his government-issued cellphone, released by U.S. Sens. Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Rand Paul (R-KY). Yet, this information was not openly offered to the general public as public health officials actively urged pregnant women to get the vaccine.

According to the senators, the government-issued phone contains over 34,000 text messages and 522 voicemails, and they are currently unable to tell if data has been deleted from the device. Most of the numbers on the phone do not have formal contact names. In fact, only three exist on the phone.

While the lawmakers and their staff are combing through the trove of messages on the phone, they released a text chain on Monday, giving Americans a snippet of what is to come.

The released exchange dates to January 25–26, 2021, and involved Fauci, then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, and then-U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. The officials were discussing COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy, including whether the timing of vaccination could affect risk.

According to the messages released by Sens. Ron Johnson and Rand Paul, Murthy asked whether there was evidence or a theoretical reason to prefer vaccination earlier or later in pregnancy. Fauci initially responded that there was no such data or theoretical reason, while also discussing anxiety among women about receiving an mRNA vaccine early in pregnancy.

Fauci subsequently raised another consideration. He wrote that because some recipients experienced significant fever and an inflammatory response following the second dose, “this theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester.” The message did not say such an association had been demonstrated; rather, Fauci was identifying a theoretical possibility that he believed the other officials should be aware of.

That distinction is important. A theoretical concern discussed among officials is not evidence that the vaccines caused miscarriages. At the time, data involving pregnant women were limited because pregnant women had not been included in the original vaccine trials. The officials’ private exchange therefore centered in part on how to assess risks and benefits amid incomplete information.

The newly released messages are nevertheless drawing scrutiny because of what those same officials subsequently told the public. On February 3, just days after the exchange, Fauci said federal regulators had found “no red flags” regarding pregnant women. Later that year, he said there was no indication of increased adverse outcomes among vaccinated pregnant women and argued that pregnant women should be vaccinated. The CDC under Walensky similarly recommended COVID-19 vaccination before or during pregnancy, while Murthy publicly encouraged vaccination during pregnancy.

The policy has since changed. In May 2025, the Trump administration removed COVID-19 vaccination from the CDC’s recommended immunization schedule for healthy pregnant women and healthy children.

The texts are part of a much larger collection now under congressional review. Johnson and Paul say Fauci’s government-issued phone contains more than 34,000 text messages and hundreds of voicemails. Johnson has indicated that his investigation is continuing as lawmakers examine those records and attempt to determine whether any information was deleted.

The latest disclosure adds to a broader question that has followed the government’s pandemic response: whether officials communicated uncertainties and potential risks to Americans as candidly as they discussed them among themselves. Public health officials routinely have to evaluate preliminary concerns that ultimately prove unfounded, but public trust depends on transparency about what is known, what remains uncertain, and how recommendations are being made.

These revelations are another reason to pray for truth and accountability in institutions entrusted with protecting human life. Let’s pray that investigators uncover the full facts, that government officials communicate honestly with the American people, and that policies affecting mothers and unborn children are guided by sound evidence, transparency, and a commitment to protecting life.
