American Journalist Sentenced to 16 Years in Russian Prison
Evan Gershkovich, Wall Street Journal reporter, has been received his sentence in Russia. The White House is working to free him.
From The Wall Street Journal. Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter falsely accused by Russian authorities of spying, was sentenced to 16 years in a high-security penal colony, after being wrongfully convicted in a hurried, secret trial that the U.S. government has condemned as a sham.
Have you taken your place on the wall?
The court’s Friday verdict—after three days of hearings—was widely viewed as a foregone conclusion, since acquittals in Russian espionage trials are exceedingly rare. Gershkovich was afforded few of the protections normally accorded to defendants in the U.S. and other Western countries. …
“This disgraceful, sham conviction comes after Evan has spent 478 days in prison, wrongfully detained, away from his family and friends, prevented from reporting, all for doing his job as a journalist,” Almar Latour, the chief executive of Dow Jones and publisher of The Wall Street Journal, and Wall Street Journal Editor in Chief Emma Tucker said in a statement. …
Russian authorities have produced no public evidence to support their allegations, which Gershkovich, the Journal and the U.S. government have vehemently and repeatedly denied. A court spokeswoman said that Gershkovich “did not admit guilt” during Friday’s hearing.
The proceedings against Gershkovich were accelerated as the court moved up hearing dates by nearly a month. Russian officials, from President Vladimir Putin on down, have signaled an interest in swapping Gershkovich for Russians held in the West. …
Gershkovich, a 32-year-old U.S. citizen, has been imprisoned since March of last year, when he was detained by the country’s Federal Security Service, or FSB, while on a reporting assignment in Yekaterinburg, around 900 miles east of Moscow. …
Russia’s detention of the American journalist has commanded public attention worldwide and prompted the White House to work to secure his release. His case has played out against a background of heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The U.S. has designated Gershkovich as wrongfully detained, committing the government to work toward his freedom. …
Russia has indicated its openness to the possibility of a prisoner-swap deal that would send him home. …
The U.S. has said it is working to release Gershkovich and other Americans held in Russia.
John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, in June said Gershkovich “is simply being used as a bargaining chip” …

Lord, the revelations of just how evil the leadership in Russia have become has unfolded before us for years through the headlines: the assassination attempts against Russian leaders in exile and corporate leaders of other countries who are aiding the Ukraine effort, the deliberate targeting of civilians in Ukraine, the ruthless treatment of Russian soldiers sent into the line of fire without adequate training or weapons, the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine, the jailing of innocent Americans, the silencing of all opposition to him through the jailing and assassination of Russians in Russia; all of this reveals the undeniable ruthless nature of the Russian leadership.
Lord, open the eyes of your people. Cause those in the media and the politicians who try to cast such obvious evil as good to repent of their unscrupulous misrepresentation of the facts.
Lord, be with all twenty of the Americans being held illegally in Russian jails. They are being held as leverage with the United States. Open the eyes of your people to how evil Putin is.
Father, I pray for Evan Gershkovich. I pray for his freedom, but I also pray for his connection with you and praise to fill his heart and mouth as he suffers. May he look to you as he waits for you and his freedom
Lord, you care for the helpless and injustice. Be with Evan Gershkovich. Comfort and sustain him. Move quickly to overturn this injustice.
Lord, open the eyes of your people to just how evil the Russian leadership has become. No longer let them be deceived by social media. Evan Gershkovich is not the only one unjustly imprisoned. Intervened on their behave. Be with the Christian leaders who have been imprisoned.
Decreeing Isaiah 54:17. AMPC “But no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall show to be in the wrong. This [peace, righteousness, security, triumph over opposition] is the heritage of the servants of the Lord [those in whom the ideal Servant of the Lord is reproduced]; this is the righteousness or the vindication which they obtain from Me [this is that which I impart to them as their justification], says the Lord.”
