While many Christians think they are helpless now that election day has come and gone, that’s not the case at all.

Intercession is in large part about using your faith, time, and voice to change the course of history, from your neighborhood to your nation to the world.

It turns out you can do the same by contacting your Congressional representatives, and as an insider, I can tell you they are listening more than you may think. In particular, there are several moderate Republicans and Democrats who could be instrumental in making key changes to the legislation, or deciding whether it passes or not at all.

Insider Intercessory Information

As Congress considers the largest range of tax hikes, policy changes, government expansion, and federal spending in years, I wanted to let you in on some insider information I learned while working on Capitol Hill.

You may know I worked for a member of Congress as a Communications Director. During that time, I was surprised to see the inner workings of how members of Congress received and responded to phone calls and emails from their constituents.

What happens when you contact your Congressman or woman? I saw firsthand that when you send an email, or call the D.C. office for your member of Congress, a diligent staffer takes notes on your comments. If you call, a staffer will write down your comments and they will be given to the member, probably compiled into a report with the others. That report is then reviewed by the member, at least in the office I worked in. Some members may be more observant than others, but I can assure you they keep their finger on the pulse of their respective districts. If 50 residents call in about a specific issue, the member will notice. If dozens call outraged about a particular bill, the member will notice. And if no one speaks up, the member will notice.

While it may seem like you are only one person, your voice matters. Some weeks, we only had a handful of emails and phone calls. If you and your prayer group began to chime in weekly, you could easily become the most vocal members of your community influencing your member of Congress. Senators get more notes because they cover larger territories, but still, regularly speaking up will not go unnoticed.

Most of my D.C. Insider articles get at least a few thousand readers. Some get tens of thousands. If all of you were to commit to sending a weekly note to your Congressman and Senator, that would be an additional thousands of responses a year that would flood the inboxes of the nation’s decisionmakers.

I’m just a former Capitol Hill insider here to tell you that although your voice may seem insignificant in such a large country, actually your Congressional representative is listening. On top of that, very few people are taking the time to actually reach out.

With that in mind, let us pray:

Father, give our elected representatives ears to hear the voices speaking your wisdom. Give them open hearts and minds to the truth and heavenly wisdom you are pouring out.

Lord, we ask that you give us boldness, diligence and wisdom in how to influence our elected leaders by using our voices.

Lord, please release your will and divine wisdom into the Congressional negotiations over these bills before the House and Senate. We ask that your purposes would prevail, and that our nation would be protected from the wiles of the enemy.

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself. (Ezekiel 3:17-19)
