“We Can’t Stand With Hate”: Michigan Democrat Crosses Party Lines for Rogers
With Michigan voters heading to the polls today, Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), who narrowly lost the Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed, crossed party lines on Sunday to endorse Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers, setting off a wave of fury from Democratic leaders and left-wing commentators.
Who is praying on the wall?
From The Daily Wire:
“Abdul [El-Sayed] made very clear that I was not welcome in his campaign, that he didn’t need me there, that he didn’t want me there. … My vote for Senate is going to be with Mike Rogers,” Stevens said. “We have to stand with country, we can’t stand with hate, we can’t stand with Hasan Piker… I stood with my party and I was booed off the stage.”
Stevens has expressed disgust with El-Sayed’s close ties to America-hating communist streamer Hasan Piker and criticized a recent ad released by El-Sayed that features commentator Tucker Carlson.
“This is a despicable betrayal from Rep. Stevens,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said. “Senate Democrats are united in our support for Abdul El-Sayed, because we know he will fight for the economic interests of working families in Michigan, unlike Mike Rogers, who is a tool of Donald Trump and billionaire donors.”
The backlash came fast. Members of Stevens’ staff resigned en masse, with her former chief of staff, Justin German, issuing a statement on their behalf pledging loyalty to El-Sayed and saying they were “heartbroken.” Michigan Democratic Party leaders cast Rogers as Trump’s handpicked candidate and a threat to democracy, former Biden official Neera Tanden called the move a betrayal of Stevens’ entire career, and commentator Mehdi Hasan labeled her a “traitor” in a post attacking her character. Former Press Secretary Jen Psaki suggested Stevens’ fiancé, who had announced his own support for Rogers days earlier, influenced her decision. El-Sayed declined to discuss the endorsement.
President Trump, who has endorsed Rogers, praised Stevens on Truth Social, calling her decision an act of “bravery” and touting her standing with Michigan’s African American and Jewish communities.
The timing could matter. El-Sayed won the August primary by less than a percentage point, and the general election remains one of the nation’s tightest. A Marist poll released in late October showed El-Sayed at 50% and Rogers at 48%, within the margin of error. A Rogers win would make him the first Republican to represent Michigan in the Senate since Spencer Abraham lost his reelection bid in 2000. Whether Stevens moves voters in a race this close remains to be seen, but her message that Democrats must “stand with country” rather than with figures like Piker is a striking rebuke from a lawmaker who was competing for her party’s nomination just months ago.
Let’s pray for Michigan voters as they head to the polls, that they would see past the noise and choose leaders who will honor God, defend life, and put the good of the nation above party loyalty. Let’s pray for Rep. Stevens as she faces a torrent of personal attacks and the loss of her staff, that she would stand firm in her convictions and be shielded from the hostility now aimed at her. Let’s pray that the hatred she warned against would find no place in Michigan’s politics or in the U.S. Senate. And let’s pray for a peaceful, honest, and secure election in Michigan and across the nation, with every legal vote counted accurately.
