Coup in Warsaw? Poland’s President Rushes Home to Confront Judges Over Top Court
Poland is in the grip of a constitutional crisis after government-backed judges moved Friday to seize control of the country’s Constitutional Tribunal, prompting President Karol Nawrocki to abandon a foreign trip and confront them at the court in a late-night showdown.
Let the IFA community know how to pray for you.
From Breitbart:
A longstanding struggle for control over the Polish judiciary came to a head on Friday as Prime Minister Tusk’s government sought to forcibly appoint judges to the Constitutional Tribunal (TK) and replace its chief Bogdan Święczkowski.
…
In response, opposition leaders from the conservative Law and Justice party, including PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński and former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, gathered outside of the Tribunal’s building, claiming that the move was unlawful and amounted to a coup, Rzeczpospolita reported.
President Nawrocki cut short a diplomatic trip to Senegal to return to Warsaw over the matter. In a sensational turn, after arriving at the Tribunal, the president was said to have gotten into a scuffle with rival politicians as he tried to enter the building. Three protesters were arrested following the fracas.
At the center of the fight is Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, one of the parliament-elected judges Nawrocki has refused to swear in. She announced she was dismissing Święczkowski and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sochański, and taking charge of the Tribunal herself. The two sides tell very different stories about what followed. Government allies accused the president of physically pushing past judges, while Nawrocki’s camp called the judges “usurpers” who used force against him. Leaked audio reportedly captured Nawrocki telling Korwin-Piotrowska and two others they are “not judges,” and the Tribunal’s official X account declared that everyone involved was committing a coup. In a statement afterward, Nawrocki accused the Tusk government of “forcibly taking over a constitutional body of state” and demanded that the “forces of coercion” leave the building.
Tusk insists he is restoring the rule of law after what he called “years of lawlessness under PiS,” and he has shown no sign of retreat. In a televised speech Saturday, he accused opposition leaders of wanting to destroy democracy and the rule of law, while Nawrocki held urgent consultations with party leaders, citing a threat to Poland’s internal security. The European Commission, meanwhile, urged Nawrocki to accept the disputed judges, fitting Brussels’ longstanding push to dismantle the conservative-appointed court.
U.S. Ambassador to Poland Thomas Rose called the confrontation “very serious indeed,” urging all sides to avoid violence while stressing that America stands with Poland and will not interfere in its internal affairs. With parliamentary elections coming in 2027, whoever controls the Tribunal could shape the fate of Tusk’s pro-EU agenda.
Let’s pray for President Nawrocki as he stands against what he calls an unlawful seizure of a constitutional institution, that God would give him courage, wisdom, and restraint. Let’s pray that any attempt to take power outside the law would fail, that Poland’s constitution would be upheld rather than bent to political ends, and that the truth about Friday night’s events would come fully to light. Let’s pray for peace in Warsaw’s streets and for the safety of everyone gathered outside the court. And let’s pray that Poland, a key ally on NATO’s eastern edge, would hold fast to its sovereignty and its Christian heritage against pressure from Brussels.
