Pulte, who currently oversees the FHFA and serves as chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, will replace former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who recently stepped down to care for her husband following a cancer diagnosis.

From AP News:

Trump made the surprise announcement Tuesday on social media that Pulte would be replacing Tulsi Gabbard, the former Hawaii congresswoman who had served as the director of national intelligence. Trump said Pulte will keep his other positions even as he fills in for Gabbard, who resigned last month after revealing her husband’s cancer diagnosis.

The Republican president cited Pulte’s work at the FHFA and his role as chair of the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as indicating that his real estate work would overlap with the skills needed to coordinate 18 federal agencies tasked with aspects of foreign and domestic security.

Several Senate Republicans reacted skeptically to Pulte’s appointment, questioning whether the housing finance director has the experience necessary to oversee the intelligence agency.

The appointment places Pulte at the head of a sprawling intelligence apparatus created after the September 11 attacks to improve coordination among federal agencies. The director of national intelligence oversees the nation’s intelligence community, which includes agencies responsible for gathering, analyzing, and sharing information related to foreign threats, terrorism, cyber warfare, and military conflicts.

President Trump praised Pulte’s management experience and loyalty, pointing to his leadership at FHFA and his close involvement with administration priorities. White House officials have described him as detail-oriented and trusted by the president. If formally nominated for the position on a permanent basis, Pulte would need Senate confirmation.

Critics, however, have focused on Pulte’s lack of traditional national security credentials. Several Republican senators expressed reservations, while Democrats argued that the position requires extensive intelligence experience. The debate comes as the United States continues to confront challenges in the Middle East, support Ukraine in its war against Russia, and navigate the growing role of artificial intelligence in military and intelligence operations.

For intercessors, this appointment is a reminder to pray for all those entrusted with protecting the nation. Regardless of political affiliation, intelligence officials make decisions that can affect military operations, diplomatic relations, and the safety of millions of Americans. As this leadership transition occurs, let’s pray for wisdom, discernment, and godly counsel for acting director Pulte!
