A growing number of Virginia prosecutors are refusing to enforce the state’s new “assault weapons” ban, setting up a conflict between local law enforcement officials and state lawmakers ahead of the law’s July 1 implementation date.

The controversy has drawn national attention as elected prosecutors and sheriffs argue the measure infringes on constitutional rights, while supporters insist local officials have no authority to disregard state law.

From Breitbart:

Over the weekend, Virginia state Sen. Saddam Azlan Salim (D), the ā€œassault weaponsā€ ban sponsor, told the prosecutors to quit ā€œtough guy posturing.ā€

But the number of Commonwealth’s Attorneys who are adamant about not enforcing the ban continued to grow until, on June 1, 2026, WJLA noted the number of Commonwealth’s Attorneys refusing to enforce it had reached ten.

One of those prosecutors is Clarke County Commonwealth Attorney Matthew E. Bass. Moreover, Breitbart News explained that Clarke County Sheriff Travis Sumption also made clear his office will not be enforcing the ban either.

The legislation is scheduled to take effect on July 1 and would prohibit the sale of certain firearms classified by lawmakers as “assault weapons.” Since its passage, opponents have argued that the measure violates the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens and unfairly targets firearms commonly owned for self-defense, recreation, and sport shooting.

The growing resistance among Commonwealth’s Attorneys highlights a broader debate taking place across the nation over the balance between gun control measures and constitutional protections. Prosecutors who oppose the law contend that they have a duty to uphold both state and federal constitutions and should not prosecute citizens under laws they believe infringe on fundamental rights. Supporters of the ban, meanwhile, argue that elected officials are obligated to enforce laws enacted by the legislature.

The dispute also reflects Virginia’s long-standing divide over gun rights. Rural and suburban communities have frequently pushed back against firearm restrictions enacted in Richmond, with several localities previously declaring themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries in response to proposed gun control measures.

This situation serves as a reminder to pray for wisdom for elected officials, prosecutors, judges, and law enforcement officers. As debates over constitutional rights continue, believers can pray that justice, truth, and respect for the rule of law would prevail and that leaders would govern with integrity and discernment.

Jesus weeps over America’s gun idolatry, which has been extrapolated far beyond the basic second amendment. Our founders called for a “well-regulated militia” – which includes our police force and military – the government “sword”. It is the ultimate irony when professing Christians choose to arm up, illustrating hatred for enemies that Jesus died to save. He actually requires us to preserve their lives for hope of redemption through Him. Instead of purchasing assault rifles and handguns, support prison ministries!

Father i pray that this ban would be done away with. Give these prosecutors and sheriffs boldness to stand for the constitution and the rights of Americans to have arms.

Lord Jesus, I ask that Your kingdom come, Your will be done in this debate, and the lack of willingness to enforce this legislation in Virginia. What actually comes to pass in this legislation and its actual enforcement does indeed have long reaching implications for similar attempts at gun control in other states in America. Personally, I cannot understand why the average American citizen thinks that they need to have in their possession, an assault weapon; however, I do understand the ongoing debate over this issue, and how it impacts the Second Amendment rights of the American people.
