U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday said the United States would impose significant sanctions on Turkey over its detention of American Christian pastor Andrew Brunson and called on Ankara to immediately release him.
“The United States will impose large sanctions on Turkey for their long time detainment of Pastor Andrew Brunson, a great Christian, family man and wonderful human being. He is suffering greatly. This innocent man of faith should be released immediately!” Trump tweeted.
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday blasted Turkey over its detention of Brunson and threatened Ankara with U.S. sanctions unless the man was freed.
“To President Erdogan and the Turkish government, I have a message on behalf of the president of the United States of America: release Pastor Andrew Brunson now or be prepared to face the consequences.
“If Turkey does not take immediate action to free this innocent man of faith and send him home to America, the United States will impose significant sanctions on Turkey until Pastor Andrew Brunson is free,” Pence said on behalf of Trump at an event hosted by the U.S. State Department.”
On Wednesday, a court in Turkey ruled that Brunson, … should be transferred to house arrest.
Brunson, who is from North Carolina and has worked in Turkey for more than 20 years, has been accused of helping the group which Ankara says was behind a failed military coup in 2016. He has denied the charges but faces up to 35 years in jail if found guilty. (Excerpts from Reuter News Service and Haaretz News Service)

Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving Pres. Trump boldness to stand up for Pastor Brunson. I pray for his immediate release as he has done nothing to harm the people or government of Turkey. He has been there 20 years serving You and ministering to Your people. I pray for his freedom and restoration to his family in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen
Working in Turkey for more than 20 years and now faced with these false accusations do not add up. Tourist will think 10 times before they even think of visiting Turkey.
Would like to believe that Turkey is fair and just but their record of Pastor Brunson’s treatment is definetely showing some big deficiencies in how they treat Christian people. I would be afraid to go to Turkey and tell anyone that I am a Christian in fear of being thrown in Jail and blamed for some crime I did not commit.
