President Donald Trump has revealed that his administration is discussing nuclear disarmament with both Russia and China, expressing hope that the world’s leading nuclear powers could reach an agreement to reduce their arsenals. The discussions come months after the expiration of the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russia.

In an October 15 interview with Newsmax, Trump confirmed that he has been speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping about denuclearization. However, he acknowledged that China may be reluctant to participate because its nuclear arsenal remains significantly smaller than those of the United States and Russia.

From The Epoch Times:

“The whole thing is a shame, because I’d love to denuclearize if possible, but we’re actually talking to Russia about that, and ‌we’re talking to China about that denuclearization,” the president said.

…

Data from the Federation of American Scientists show that Russia leads in total nuclear weapons inventory with 5,420 warheads, while the United States has 5,042 and China has 620. Next in line are France with an estimated 370 warheads, the United Kingdom with 225, and India with 190.

…

The last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russia expired on Feb. 5, leaving no legally binding limits on the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals for the first time in decades.

The expiration of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) marked a significant turning point in international nuclear security. Originally implemented in 2011, the agreement limited the United States and Russia to 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads each, alongside restrictions on deployed missiles, bombers, and nuclear-capable launchers.

With those restrictions no longer legally binding, the Trump administration is pursuing a broader agreement that could include China. U.S. Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Thomas G. DiNanno has called for Beijing’s inclusion in future nuclear arms negotiations, warning that China’s arsenal currently operates without the transparency and restrictions previously imposed on Washington and Moscow.

According to DiNanno, China could possess 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030. Such an expansion would further complicate negotiations, particularly as Beijing may be unwilling to accept limitations while its arsenal remains smaller than those of its rivals.

President Trump has also expressed dissatisfaction with the former New START agreement, arguing that the United States should negotiate a modernized treaty rather than simply extend the previous one. Russia has indicated openness to a new agreement, although the Kremlin has suggested that France and the United Kingdom should also participate.

These developments underscore the importance of international diplomacy at a time when the world’s largest nuclear powers are operating without the safeguards of their previous arms control agreement. Whether the ongoing discussions produce a new treaty remains uncertain, but the consequences of failure could be significant for global security.

As President Trump engages with Russia and China on this critical issue, let’s pray for wisdom, discernment, and successful diplomacy. Scripture reminds us in Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” Let’s ask the Lord to guide these negotiations and protect our nation and the world from the devastation of nuclear conflict.
