President Donald Trump signed a new executive order this week that changes how many vaccines the federal government recommends for children, giving parents more say in their kids’ health care decisions. The order comes after years of growing concern among parents about the number of shots children receive and questions about possible links to rising autism rates.

The change marks one of the most significant shifts in U.S. vaccine policy in decades, moving the country’s official recommendations closer to those of other developed nations.

An executive order to decrease the number of immunizations recommended for children by federal agencies to “maximize parental choice over childhood vaccines” was signed Monday by President Donald Trump, who drew a link between vaccines and the increase in autism diagnoses.

With Trump’s latest order, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) immunization schedule will recommend that children receive vaccines to protect against 11 diseases — down from the 18 diseases recommended by the agency in 2024. From now on, the CDC will recognize the “Gold Standard Childhood Vaccine Recommendations,” which were put in place with recommendations from health professionals.

Immunizations for hepatitis, COVID-19, and influenza are among the shots that will no longer be recommended for all children, but will still be available if parents opt in.

The order also changes how the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, is given. Instead of one combined shot, children will now receive three separate vaccinations at three separate doctor visits. Trump explained the reasoning during the Oval Office signing, saying, “Together there could be a possibility that they are quite lethal, and separately, it looks like they are not at all lethal, just very effective.”

The president also connected the policy shift to concerns about autism, saying diagnosis rates were far lower in previous generations and calling today’s numbers an “epidemic.” He credited Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya, and Dr. Heidi Overton, deputy assistant to the president for domestic policy, for their work on the new guidelines. A scientific assessment cited by the White House found the U.S. currently recommends more childhood vaccines than any other country, sometimes more than double what European nations require, and that many of those countries maintain high vaccination rates through public trust and education rather than government mandates.

The order does not ban any vaccines. Parents can still choose to have their children receive any of the previously recommended shots, including those for hepatitis, COVID-19, and the flu. States that require vaccines for school enrollment are being encouraged, though not required, to review their laws in light of the new federal guidance. The administration has also directed HHS to continue evaluating the risks and benefits of childhood vaccines using both American and international data.

For many Christian parents, this issue touches on deeply held convictions about stewardship, discernment, and the God-given responsibility to make decisions for their children’s health and well-being. Proverbs 22:3 reminds believers that “the prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” Whatever a family’s ultimate choice on vaccines, this policy shift represents a recognition that parents, not government agencies, bear the primary responsibility before God for the care of their children. It is also a reminder to pray for wisdom for medical researchers and policymakers to put the American people first.
