As democratic socialists gain influence within the Democratic Party, one of the party’s top congressional leaders is pushing back against suggestions that Democrats are moving too far to the left.

House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-CA) appeared on MSNBC this week, where he was pressed about whether the rise of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and far-left candidates could become a liability for Democrats heading into the midterm elections.

The conversation turned to the issue roughly four minutes into the interview, when host Donny Deutsch warned that Democrats could undermine an otherwise favorable electoral environment if the party became “too radical.” Deutsch specifically pointed to Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and asked Aguilar how Democrats could ensure the party “does not lurch too far left and hurt themselves.”

Aguilar rejected the premise.

“The party isn’t lurching too far left,” he said, arguing that congressional elections ultimately come down to individual candidates and their records. Aguilar accused House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republicans of attempting to portray Democratic candidates across the country as communists regardless of their actual positions.

Aguilar also sought to distance the broader Democratic caucus from socialist ideology.

“I can tell you the Democratic caucus, you know, believes in capitalism. We believe in, in the rule of law,” he said, adding that Democrats would continue supporting those principles legislatively.

The exchange comes as the DSA’s growing prominence has fueled an internal debate over the Democratic Party’s ideological direction. Democratic socialist candidates have scored increasingly consequential victories, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and, more recently, El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary.

Aguilar’s interviewer acknowledged that concern directly, referring to the widespread discussion that “the DSA’s taking over,” before arguing that Republican attempts to associate every Democratic congressional candidate with the organization could backfire. He suggested that voters who personally know moderate Democratic candidates may reject attempts to portray them as communists or DSA members.

Aguilar agreed, pointing specifically to Democratic candidates and incumbents in South Texas. He argued that Republicans would struggle to characterize candidates with records of supporting Border Patrol, prisons, and capitalism as DSA-aligned socialists.

“There’s just no credibility to those arguments,” Aguilar said. He argued that Republican accusations of communism “just don’t land” in such districts and characterized the attacks as a sign of political desperation.

But Aguilar’s defense of individual Democratic candidates does not fully answer the larger question raised during the interview: how much influence will the socialist left ultimately wield over the Democratic Party?

That question has become increasingly significant as voters within the party have grown more receptive to socialism. A recent CBS News/YouGov poll found Democrats viewed socialism more favorably than capitalism, while roughly half held positive views of the label “democratic socialist.” Younger, more liberal Democrats were especially receptive to socialism.

The divide creates a potentially consequential tension heading into the midterms. Aguilar is emphasizing the ideological diversity of the Democratic caucus and insisting that it remains committed to capitalism. At the same time, democratic socialists are demonstrating an increasing ability to win Democratic primaries and push the party’s political conversation to the left.

For intercessors, these developments underscore the importance of looking beyond party labels and examining the principles, policies, and movements shaping America’s political parties. Scripture warns about the dangers of covetousness while repeatedly commanding justice and generosity toward those in need. Let’s pray that Americans would discern between biblical compassion and political ideologies that place excessive faith and authority in government, and that our elected leaders would uphold economic freedom, personal responsibility, justice, and wise stewardship.
