The Democratic Socialists of America scored another significant victory Tuesday night, as a DSA member pulled off a major upset in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary. But elsewhere in the Sunshine State, Democratic voters decisively rejected socialist challengers, revealing an ongoing struggle over the ideological direction of the Democratic Party.

Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate despite being dramatically outspent. The result puts a self-described socialist on the ballot against Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in November.

Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member and Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon scored a massive upset in the state’s Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. Nixon ran against retired Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a prominent critic of Trump who played a central role in the left’s failed 2019 impeachment attempt, who was expected to emerge victorious.

She defeated Vindman by almost 12 points, despite his $16.3 million war chest, compared to hers of only about $1 million. As of July, Vindman had spent about $9 million on the race, while Nixon had spent just over $700,000.

Nixon will square off in a statewide race against Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla.

Nixon’s victory is especially notable because of the enormous financial disparity between the two campaigns. Vindman entered the contest with national recognition and a massive fundraising advantage, but Nixon nevertheless defeated him by nearly 12 percentage points.

Her victory comes amid growing attention to the DSA’s influence within Democratic politics. In recent elections, socialist candidates have demonstrated an ability to defeat better-funded establishment Democrats, raising questions about whether the party’s base is shifting further to the left.

Tuesday’s Florida results, however, offered a more complicated picture.

In Florida’s newly redrawn 20th Congressional District, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz defeated a field that included socialist activist Elijah Manley. Manley raised nearly $1 million but ultimately finished third. During the campaign, he argued that Democrats needed “fresh leaders” and criticized Wasserman Schultz, who is white, for seeking to represent what he described as a historically Black district.

Another closely watched ideological contest came in Florida’s 25th Congressional District, where Rep. Jared Moskowitz defeated DSA member Oliver Larkin by a decisive 64%-36% margin.

Larkin campaigned on a platform that included abolishing ICE and prosecuting its members, expanding the Supreme Court, establishing a $25 federal minimum wage, ending the embargo on Cuba, and granting statehood to Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Following his victory, Moskowitz directly confronted the socialist movement.

“Tonight, Democratic voters sent a clear message. I faced a challenge from the DSA. They threw everything at me and I didn’t change who I am or what I believe, and the voters overwhelmingly chose the independent-minded approach I’ve brought to Congress,” he said. Moskowitz added that he had “taken on extremes in the DSA and won.”

The contrasting results make Florida an interesting snapshot of the larger ideological battle taking place among Democrats. DSA-backed candidates are demonstrating that they can win significant races, including a statewide Senate nomination, even against well-funded opponents. At the same time, established Democrats are successfully resisting socialist challengers in other districts.

The results come as Democratic leaders face increasing questions about socialism’s influence within their party. House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar recently insisted that Democrats are not “lurching too far left,” telling MSNBC that the Democratic caucus “believes in capitalism.” Yet victories by DSA-aligned candidates continue to ensure that the debate over the party’s direction will remain difficult to dismiss.

For intercessors, these elections are another reminder of the importance of understanding not only individual candidates but also the political movements and philosophies shaping them. As Americans prepare to vote in November, let’s pray for discernment among voters, wisdom concerning the ideologies competing for influence in our government, and leaders who will uphold constitutional government, economic freedom, justice, and responsible stewardship.
