A federal judge has temporarily halted the Trump administration’s efforts to establish a nearly $1.8 billion compensation fund for individuals who were harmed by government “weaponization,” setting up a legal battle that could determine whether the controversial program moves forward.

The Justice Department announced the creation of an “Anti-Weaponization Fund” last week as part of an agreement to settle Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the leak of his tax records.

It set up a $1.776 billion ⁠fund overseen by a five-member commission to dole out payments to those who show they were victims of “lawfare” and “weaponization,” terms Trump and his allies have used to describe investigations and criminal cases against them.

Friday’s ruling came in a lawsuit filed by a group that said it was targeted “by the Trump-Vance administration as ideological or political opponents” and alleged they would be ineligible for payouts from the fund.

U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema issued a temporary order preventing the administration from taking further steps to establish or operate the fund while the court considers additional legal arguments. The order will remain in effect at least until June 12. According to the ruling, the judge determined that maintaining the status quo was necessary to prevent money from being distributed before the courts had an opportunity to fully review the legality of the program.

The fund has generated significant controversy since its announcement. Supporters argue that Americans who were unfairly targeted by politically motivated investigations deserve restitution. The Department of Justice has maintained that the program is lawful and that compensation will not be awarded based on political affiliation. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has stated that there are no partisan requirements for eligibility, and the department says it remains confident that the fund will ultimately survive legal scrutiny.

Critics, however, argue that the program could become a taxpayer-funded vehicle for rewarding political allies. The lawsuit challenging the fund was brought by Democracy Forward, a left-leaning legal organization that claims some of its members could be excluded from compensation based on their political views. The group includes a former Justice Department prosecutor involved in January 6 cases and a California professor who was arrested while protesting an immigration enforcement operation.

The legal challenge is one of at least three lawsuits currently seeking to block the fund. Additional concerns have been raised by some Republican lawmakers who worry that individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol breach could potentially receive compensation. The Justice Department has not yet announced who will serve on the five-member commission responsible for reviewing claims and distributing payments.

This also comes amid several attacks against the Trump administration launched by rogue judges. Since President Trump’s inauguration we have covered the many ways judges across the nation have attempted to hamstring his agenda. Judge Brinkema, who was appointed by former Democratic President Bill Clinton, is the latest in a long line of judges who have used the bench and the gavel to stop the President from serving Americans and upholding his campaign promises.

This case highlights ongoing debates about fairness, accountability, and the role of government institutions. As the courts weigh competing claims, let’s pray that truth would prevail, that justice would be administered impartially, and that rogue, activists judges would be stopped in their efforts to attack the Trump administration.
