Following an attack from Palestinian territory, Israel launched an airstrike in Gaza on Tuesday. Many fear a wider conflict breaking out.
From The Wall Street Journal. Israel carried out airstrikes in Gaza early Tuesday in response to a rocket fired from the Palestinian territory, raising fears of a wider conflict amid heightened tensions after days of clashes at a sensitive holy site in Jerusalem.
Israel’s military said it targeted a Hamas weapons-manufacturing site in Gaza, hours after it intercepted the rocket near the Gaza border with its Iron Dome aerial-defense system, which set off warning sirens in southern Israel late Monday. There weren’t any immediate reports of injuries on either side.
This was the first exchange of rocket fire and airstrikes between militant group Hamas, which controls Gaza, and Israel since January, and represents a new dimension in escalating tensions between Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank in recent weeks. Confrontations last year in Jerusalem contributed to an 11-day deadly conflict between Israel and Hamas….
Israel says, as a policy, it holds Hamas responsible for any fire from Gaza and targets the Islamist group’s operations in the event of attacks.
Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said the Israeli airstrike hit empty open areas and that militants from the group fired ground-to-air missiles at the Israeli military aircraft. The Israeli military didn’t report any damage to its aircraft….
Multiple clashes in recent days at the Al Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem, the city’s holiest and most sensitive site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, have left nearly 200 people injured. Palestinians are protesting what they say are Israeli government policies that have degraded Muslim control over the holy site in favor of Jews. Israel’s government denies it has changed the status quo at the holy site…
