I Prayed have prayed
Help us Lord to speak the truth to others in love as You have commanded.

Last week, a listener who follows a lot of Christian podcasts, including BreakPoint, wrote us with the following question, troubled by the conflicting opinions among Christians. Here’s how she put it:

“In most cases the Christians proponents seem to have a genuine love for Jesus and are trying to live out their belief faithfully. Yet their conclusions and interpretation of the Scriptures are often diametrically opposed…If intelligent, well educated, sincere Christians can come to such different interpretations of Scripture, how can I possibly hope to come to a correct understanding of the Truth?”

Given the hurt, anger, and even violence on streets across America right now, not to mention all of our social media news feeds, I imagine this person isn’t the only one wondering about the unity that Christ prayed for in the Garden, as recorded in John 17.  “All mine are yours,” Jesus prayed, “and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.” . . .

One feature of today’s discourse, however, is how quickly conflict can escalate, and not just in tone but also in assuming bad character of others. We welcome feedback on our BreakPoint commentaries and, of course, we get it. Last week, many people took issue with one commentary in particular, for which I am solely responsible. I expected and received disagreement, as well as some name calling (my favorite was “Biden-supporter”) and accusations about my character.

Now, to be perfectly clear, I slept just fine. The larger point is that the cliché, that Christians are better known for what we’re against than what we are for, needs to be updated. Increasingly today, we are better known for being against each other than for each other. Not only does this cripple what Jesus said would be among the most effective tools of Christian witness to the world, “by this all people will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another,” but it can harm the faith of some within the Church as well.

Love, and we must be clear about this, should never be reduced to mere niceness.  Nor does it mean that we should never disagree with one another. Ideas have consequences and bad ideas have victims.  There’s too much at stake. Still, if we’re to follow Fr. Robert Sirico’s counsel to “be ruthless with ideas and gentle with people” there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, though it seems that Christians disagree on much, we actually agree on most of the core tenants of the Christian faith.  Theologically speaking, we may differ on who to baptize when, but Christians largely agree on what baptism is about. We might disagree on which aspects of the Holy Spirit’s work to emphasize today, but not that the Holy Spirit is working. We agree that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died on the cross and rose from the dead, sits at the right hand of the throne of God, and is Lord of Lords. Our disagreements, of course, matter. And sometimes, theological error pushes some outside of anything that can rightly be called orthodox, but the Church has been largely consistent on the most important theological doctrines.

Second, those theological convictions that are core, should be kept that way. Today, too many secondary issues, especially on how best to apply Christian morality and truth to the public square, have been made primary. Now hear me clearly, secondary issues are important as well, and we should debate them. Those ideas have consequences and victims, too. But we are far too quick to make secondary issues primary and to dismiss those on the other side of us as being evil.

Finally, the Scriptures are just as clear about how we are to communicate what is true as it is that we should to communicate what is true. The fourth module of our Truth.Love.Together event is all about how we can speak the truth in love. Launching the module is the one and only Lee Strobel, who talks about being better salt and brighter light. Also presenting is Obianuju Ekeocha one of the leaders of the pro-life movement in Africa. She talks about why speaking the truth is an act of love.

We need to get better at this. In a world that is hesitant to embrace anything as true, we must show them how to do it. Atheist philosopher Frederick Nietzsche once remarked, “All truths are bloody truths to me.” That doesn’t strike me as a Christian sentiment. Certainly all truth is worth standing for and, sometimes, fighting for. But not all of our convictions are worth wounding others for.

This is one of the best articles I have read in a long time. Current events and politics can’t be the foundation of our faith. Christ is. To allow differences to separate us is wrong and against the Word of God.

Calm down people. This life is nothing but a big randon, cosmo fuck up. We all want to believe in a god, but let’s all be honest. When our lives here are over, we’ll never exist again in any form. Hard to wrap our heads around that i know, buts it’s the only logical answer. The more educated we’ve become over the centuries concerning religious beliefs, the more agnostics and atheists we have. By far. Of course where we are born and how we are raised determines what god or gods we believe in too. How little sense does that make? Born in the east, muslim. The west usually christian. 2 religions that depise each other because someone was born and raised in different countries and we robotically followed our ancestors dogma concerning religious beliefs. We had no say. Blindly follow. Be a good sheep. Not a goat. And besides the bible, their is , unfortunately zero proof of a god. The bible. Yes. Where the burning bush talks, a man lives in a whales stomach for days, parting of seas. We don’t even know who wrote this fable but we follow it and use it to defunct any logical explanations of why a god does or doesn’t exist. “You don’t believe? Just read psalm 13… How can’t you not believe now”. I’ve tried for years to find the holy spirit but felt nothing. But more doubt and now certainty that religion is nothing more then a tool to control people. And it pains me to say that. So forget about all this nonsense going on in the world and just try to enjoy the time you have left. Wasted worrying over nothing. Because in the end, it doesn’t matter one fucking bit

Mr. Sylvia, I read your response over twice. Would you mind if I just responded by saying a prayer for you? I believe in the power of prayer because I have seen it work! It may not seem “logical”, but the true test of anything is “does it work”! It does. I don’t know how, but I don’t have to know how! I just watch for results when I pray and they come! My prayer for Mr. Sylvia: “Dear Father in heaven, Mr. Sylvia is discouraged, and feeling hopeless. He is seeking to make sense out of a world that feels like it is spinning out of control. It’s not! Everything is as it should be. You are sovereign (superior to all others) and in control! We have nothing to fear! Everything that is happening that is evil, you will use for good. We pray. We wait for your answers. You have a plan. It’s a good one. Keep Mr. Sylvia in the palm of Your hand. Help him to surround himself with good people. He is a seeker. Please find him as he continues to seek You! The hidden treasure of your love is rich and we need it in our lives. I pray this all in Jesus precious and powerful name. Amen.”

Actually, Mike Sylvia, it does matter, and you matter, especially to God who created you. God takes notice of you, He knows every hair on your head. God wants you to be in His family, and therefore so do I. When Jesus Christ died on the cross for all the sins of mankind, you were included in his sacrifice. If you were the only one who would have believed in him, he would have died just for you, that is the loving Lord he is. God is perfect, God is light, in Him is no darkness at all. All of us humans began life with the original sin from Adam. Jesus Christ The son of God was the perfect sacrifice to atone for our sin – he took our sin upon him and when we believe, he washes us clean, we are completely forgiven and can boldly stand in the pure presence of God. Have you read Romans 10:9-10 ? Accepting Jesus Christ into your heart isn’t necessarily a feeling, but it is a decision only you can make. God is wisdom and understanding. If you lack wisdom and understanding regarding Him, He will give it to you if you ask Him. ‘Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you.’ I. Peter 5:6-7 Praying for you!

Very good article! I think maybe where Christians seem to differ most regarding current events is whether anyone gets sucked into the worldly way of looking at things OR the Biblical way. It comes from your news sources, whether they are either left or right. There are Christian based news sources, such as IFA, but not all Christians seek them out. Am I being too simplistic? Fake news is a reality.

JoAnn, U are not being too simplistic. We have to guard our minds. We are in charge of what we allow to come into them. Some people might think this Scripture is too simplistic also, but I love it! Philippians 4:8 Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever thins are of good report, think on these things. Isn’t that beautiful? God’s love letter to the human race, how I love it! It meets our every need!
