Eight Words Capture How We Must Act Amidst Cultural Collapse
“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom,” Benjamin Franklin said. “As nations become more corrupt and violent, they have more need of masters.” Today, radical leftists applaud this corrupt and violent reality. Meanwhile, over 200,000 concerned citizens who desire freedom participated in a prayer call the day former President Donald Trump was indicted in New York.

Did you know that the greatest awakening in world history took place when a servant of God proclaimed powerful words of warning in another time and place? The so-warned leader and his people were so shaken by the severity of the message that they turned immediately away from their sinful ways and toward God:
When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it (Jonah 3:10).
Read the entire account of this amazing, historical event in Jonah 3:1–10.
What Will It Take to Awaken Us?
On an individual basis, scores say their conversion took place after a series of events jolted them to humble themselves and turn to God. Should we not expect something similar is needful for a nation at large? “They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble and He delivered them from their distress” (Ps. 107:5-6).
An amalgam of unexpected, swift events exploding in tandem with what’s currently unfolding in these polarized and perilous times would certainly get the attention of millions in America. The following are real and within the realm of possibility very shortly: devastating economic collapse; another Civil War; horrific gas and food shortages; China/Taiwan war; Russian/European near-nuclear conflicts; a series of coordinated Islamic terrorist attacks; outbreak of a new man-made virus; racial riots again erupting nationwide; multiple massive earthquakes, Electromagnetic Pulse attack crippling electronics; assassination of a major political figure.
David Stockman, Ronald Reagan’s former Budget Director, said of our economy, “All hell is about to break loose!”
With millions of illegal immigrants and numbers of “watchlist” terrorists continuing to invade our country jeopardizing national security due to an “open border,” there is a ticking time bomb in our midst. Recall 2977 people were killed by a handful of terrorists on 9/11.
To picture what it could be like when some of these events explode on the scene, picture a segment from “The Walking Dead.” Or visualize cities becoming lawless centers (the George Floyd riots) of desperate people who’ve become marauders and looters carrying out criminal acts with impunity.
Don’t dismiss this as nonsensical conspiracy theories. Do we really expect people in a crisis today to let others go ahead of them in lines and folks to patiently serve one another amidst shortages, curfews and roving vigilantes?
“God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear…” but it might wake people up to pause and ponder some of these coming realities. Just read afresh what Jesus said would be taking place prior to His Return.
How Should We Then Live?
In the 1960s, theologian and prophet Francis Schaeffer posed that question to Christians. Analyzing events in history and foretelling what was coming to our nation, he warned of an implosion while calling us to engage our culture and to beseech God for divine intervention.
Christians can no longer settle for status-quo religion through neatly packaged, sanitized, inspirational programs and services — while ignoring the epidemics of global persecution of Christians and the sight of Western civilization crumbling. In England, the one archbishop of Canterbury said: “Christianity is facing extinction in Great Britain.”
We are currently engaged in a titanic, unprecedented struggle against the forces of evil, and we must categorically reject any wishful thinking that this is merely temporary, or cyclical, or manageable. We are at a tipping point in which we will either experience a divine intervention of God in a Third Great Awakening, or else witness fulfillment of A.W. Tozer’s prophetic warning: “Historians will conclude that we of the 20th century had the genius to create a great civilization but we lacked the moral wisdom to preserve it.”
One Word Captures Our Charge
In Matthew 24 and Mark 13, Jesus revealed to us the signs of the end of the age. He basically summed everything up by saying: “The one who perseveres to the end will be saved” (see Matthew 24:13 and Mark 13:13).
There simply are no shortcuts in difficult days. We must draw upon the grace of God and make a quality decision that we will persevere.
Currently, I’m reading Letter to the American Church, by Eric Metaxas, which describes how Dietrich Bonhoeffer persevered as a prophetic voice against Nazi Germany. Similarly, Winston Churchill’s perseverance is highlighted in The Churchill Factor: How One Man Made History, in which this towering figure of the 20th century is presented as having literally saved Western civilization from extinction.
When Churchill’s countrymen and even his own cabinet were capitulating to Hitler and the Nazi war machine, he exhorted Britain to persevere, to fight, and never to negotiate or compromise. “If this long island story of ours is to end at last, let it end only when each one of us lies choking in his own blood upon the ground!” With this almost Shakespearean climax, Churchill rallied them to press on until victory was theirs.
Let us repent, as the people of Nineveh did, and let us remember Jeremiah’s words: “If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses?” (Jeremiah 12:5).

AMEN LORD God! 🙏 Help save us from ourselves is right! As we are witnessing cultural collapse, help us as a country see the truth of this country, wise up and REPENT as a nation! Only you can save us!
Lord, I pray that the spirit of God would saturate America. May your spirit become a permanent fixture in our hearts & minds, both in front & behind us… calling us back to live virtuous lives that are a result of staying committed to You Lord. Help us Lord, for we cannot do this without You. Amen.
Father, awaken America! Lead us to repentance, Lord, and save us from ourselves!
Lord, like Judah’s kings before us, May we in humility and desperate need cry out for You to help the powerless against the so-called might of the enemy. With our eyes firmly focused on You we shout Your praises and wait in expectation for the enemies’ walls to come crumbling down. Purge our hearts to be wholly committed to You as Your people, as we look forward to the day of God and seek for His kingdom to come. 2 Peter 3:11-14
Amen🙏🏻
It seems to me God IS awakening The Church… yes, there are still many that are still spiritually blinded, but we who are not must pray for opened eyes and ears to see God’s Truth.
Five years ago as I lay in bed sick with CIRS, my body divided against itself, I read the Bible, prayed, cried out to God, sang worship songs, and listened. God taught me all about 1 Corinthians 12 unity in the Body, through division in my own body. At that time God placed these prayers on my heart to pray for our country and the Body of Christ. From John 17:23 I pray, “Lord Jesus, I come into agreement with the prayer you prayed to our Father concerning us when you said, ‘I in them and You in Me, may they be brought to complete unity, to let the world know that You sent Me and have loved them even as you have loved Me.’” From Malachi 4:6 I pray “Heavenly Father, Sovereign Lord, Merciful God, turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers. Restore families. Restore the Church. Restore our country.” From Ephesians 5:13 I pray, “Shine in us, O Light of the world. Expose darkness, illuminate darkness, turn darkness to light in my heart. Shine through us, O Light of the world. Expose darkness, illuminate darkness, turn darkness to light in the world around us.”
I pray in the name of Jesus.
Can anyone list the 8 words of how we are to act in these hard times or is it the author’s mistake?
Hi Tom,
My guess is at the beginning of the article: “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom,” Benjamin Franklin said.
If those are the words to which Mr. Tomczak refers, it seems that our prayer should be for a massive number of “heart-changes” so that multitudes choose to surrender to the LORDSHIP of JESUS, the Christ, with a consequence of our population becoming a “virtuous people” through transformation initiated and sustained by the submission to Holy Spirit.
Lord I praying for a great awaking in America and true repented hearts in America
Amen🙏🏻
“Sin sick” is what my old, now gone home Pastor used to say. When people become so sick of/from their sin they will turn to God. God forgive us our sins, have mercy on Your church and raise us up once again in Your power, love and discipline. Make us the light and salt in these dark times that You will be glorified in a great awakening. Give us the courage to stand for truth and justice and Your gospel.
Really 40 days or is this hypothetical? What can I do as one little citizen? I pray, I vote, I write my congressman, senators. I even used to write to the president, till my letter was apprehended by trollers online. Please give us action steps. The state of the church and the religious and political environment in some areas is really under attack, like in WI. God has to be the one that comes through on our behalf, there is no other. The power of the resurrection cannot be matched. Jesus, Jesus, help save us from ourselves. It is like Sodom and Gommorah.
“Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness.” – Anne Frank
Keep praying and focus on Jesus not the storm around you. God bless you.
Amen🙏🏻
We have been a nation set apart from God. However, we have forgotten to share God with our children and the coming generations. The public schools have replaced parents and all authority, and we have kids who are being deceived on every front. Today, our churches are not full or even half full. I know in my church for the last 20 years, kids go through the system, go off to college and rarely are seen again. Some kids are in great families and decide to go their own way. We need revival big time. We have all gotten lazy about our faith and now are reaping the consequences. I believe in prayer, and also we need to take active steps of faith. God help us! God Forgive us!
Yes, the experience documented in Jonah can give us hope and an example of what to do. We also find direction in the promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14 – “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
The actions we need to take are clear – humble ourselves, pray, seek God, and turn from our own ways to God’s ways – then God says He will hear, forgive and heal us and our nation. When things are hopeless humanly speaking, we find hope in God, in His promises, in His mercy towards us, in His infinite grace and compassion towards us, as He “remembers that we are dust.” But like the prodigal son, we have to come to our senses. repent, turn and head for home to beg forgiveness. The prodigal was surprised at the welcome he received, expecting only to be made a servant if his father would show him that kindness, since he had forfeited his position as a son. But to his surprise, he was reconciled to his father, reinstated and there was much rejoicing and healing of relationship. There is hope if we will humble ourselves and pursue God. We must each one be Churchhills in courage and perseverance – refusing to bow/surrender to evil – and in so doing perhaps encourage others to stay the course as well.
I remember reading some book, maybe “Five days that changed the world” about the evacuation by boat of allied troops across the channel to England during WW11. Those were five days of national prayer for Britain and it changed the course of the war. Prayer changes what is impossible with man because all things are possible with God! Lord use us to bring Your light, Truth and love into this world at this time in history. We are each here for “such a time as this.” http://www.mtothe5th.wordpress.com
Dear Heavenly Father,
We are now at the time where many declare “evil is good and good is evil” as your word clearly states. The devil has come upon us with great wrath, knowing he has but a short time. But please Father provide us with a respite where we call upon you in repentance and acknowledgement that these problems are purely spiritual ones and only you in your infinite mercy can save us from ourselves. Our sins have reached Heaven and God in his time and wisdom will act! Please God our father return this country to what is was supposed to be – a God fearing Christian nation, always looking to you for guidance. In Jesus’ name we pray, hear our prayer. Praise be to God!
Excellent words!
This should not be in the newsfeed….it is a man’s sanctified imagination….it is a man’s opinion…..Dangerous place for this is in the daily newsfeed.
What are you referring to? I skimmed through the article found nothing off color.
It appears you are totally unaware of what is happening in our country. If you are watching mainstream media stop! I used to watch it as well, such propaganda! Our country is in such danger right now, with so many lost and unreached souls, families and individuals being attacked by our own government, from free speech to attacking us with a deadly shot, destroying our economy. Eric Metaxas tells us in his new book what happened to Germany’s Church. I feel it is the same in the American Church with very few realizing what time it is and a lot of them are cults not following the Bible. I pray for real revival only with God will this nation be saved! It was a very good article!
I was referring to the danger of sanctified imagination…and by the way you couldn’t be more wrong about me. I am very aware of what is happening in our country and stopped listening to the “drive by” media 30 years ago. I use IFA every morning to pray in specific ways for this nation and the world. Sad that you were so quick to judge someone you did not know.
By the way…I reread the article this morning and can’t find where the author suggests using sanctified imagination about God judging this nation in 40 days…Maybe it was edited out….
