According to The National Pulse, the DSA’s official publication, Democratic Left, recently published a proposal titled “Socialists in Congress Should Hold the Speakership Hostage.” The proposal calls for DSA-aligned lawmakers to use their votes for Speaker of the House as leverage to secure changes to congressional rules.

If Democrats win the House in November, the DSA intend to make Hakeem Jeffries’s path to the speakership difficult. The DSA has called for DSA-aligned Representatives elected in November to withhold their votes for Speaker unless Jeffries agrees to changes that would give the far-left bloc within the Democrats greater influence.

The DSA’s first major objective is to lower the threshold for discharge petitions, which can force legislation onto the House floor when party leaders refuse to bring it up. This would allow a hypothetical far-left, DSA-aligned bloc within the Congressional Democrats to force votes on specific issues, such as defunding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ending U.S. aid to Israel, and reducing military spending, as well as advance key DSA proposals such as universal healthcare. Fundamentally, lowering the threshold for discharge petitions could increase the relative power of DSA-aligned Representatives compared to the Democrats’ congressional leadership.

The DSA’s other objective is to lower the threshold for “vacating the chair,” the procedure used to remove the Speaker and trigger a new election. The proposal is presented as insurance against Democrat leaders failing to follow through on DSA-aligned promises. As such, lowering the threshold to “vacate the chair” could allow a hypothetical far-left, DSA-aligned bloc to force a leadership crisis and even shut down the House.

The strategy would give a relatively small group of socialist lawmakers the ability to challenge Democratic leadership on major legislative and procedural decisions. The DSA specifically wants to make it easier to force votes on legislation and threaten the removal of a Speaker who refuses to cooperate with its demands.

The proposal draws inspiration from the congressional confrontation that resulted in the removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy in October 2023. At that time, a small group of Republicans joined Democrats in voting to remove McCarthy, demonstrating how a narrow House majority can leave leadership vulnerable to pressure from a relatively small faction.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has already distanced himself from the socialist organization’s agenda. Earlier this year, Jeffries publicly rejected several DSA positions, including its proposal to abolish the Senate. His opposition could set the stage for a confrontation if Democrats regain control of the House in November.

Importantly, the DSA’s ambitions extend beyond the upcoming midterms. Its proposal acknowledges that significant legislative victories may be difficult while President Donald Trump remains in office. Instead, the organization hopes to secure procedural changes that could increase its influence over Congress for years to come.

For intercessors, this development raises important questions about the ideological direction of Congress and the future of American governance. Scripture reminds us in 1 Timothy 2:1–2 to pray for those in authority. As political factions compete for influence, let’s pray that our nation’s leaders would exercise wisdom, uphold constitutional principles, reject Marxism in all its forms, and pursue policies that serve the American people.
