DAVE RAMSEY’S PROVOCATIVE STIMULUS COMMENTS
Personal finance guru Dave Ramsey was surprised when his comments against the proposed $600 stimulus went viral on Twitter and he offered a fiery response to all his critics.
“So apparently this is worth discussing. Because according to Twitter it’s the number one thing on Twitter right now,” Ramsey said on his show Thursday. . . .
“So I said on Fox News this morning, that I don’t believe in the stimulus check because if you get $600 or $1,400 and it changes your life, you didn’t have a life, you’re already screwed,” explained Ramsey. . . .
“I mean, honestly, I thought it was a fairly obvious thing! If $600 changes your life, your life really sucks! You don’t have a life, you’re screwed!” he added. . . .
“If you really believe $600 is going to change your life, you’re an idiot! Really!” he added. “I mean I’ve been broke, and I never even then thought $600 would change my life, back when $600 was a lot of money!”
Ramsey went on to explain that he wasn’t intending to “poor-shame” people, as his critics accused, but only pointing out that many people needed to improve their financial standing so that they wouldn’t depend on a check from the government to improve their lives.
“My point is that they’re lying to you, they’re not really helping you!” Ramsey said of the government. . . .
“The point is you’re looking to government to fix your life,” Ramsey continued, “and as long as you wait on Washington, D.C., to save your life, you’re gonna suck, your life is gonna suck!” . . .

I read a lot of the comments here and would like to point out something everyone needs to understand…Dave Ramsey’s work to encourage people not to be credit-dependent came into our lives when we were in the hole to the tune of $15,000 in credit cards. We began digging out from that mess and were almost free when I was diagnosed with cancer at 54 years old. There was no insurance offered at my small business I worked at, so we had all our ins. with my husband’s work. (He worked for a big software development company.) He told his boss of my situation, they promptly downsized him! We watched as all our savings went to tests, oncologists and treatment. $60,000 later, 6 years to dig out of that; but where would we have been without taking Ramsey’s advice seriously?? While I struggled to pay for medicine and treatment, $600 would NOT have helped in the long run, and to be conditioned to depend on the govt. would be more crippling than the cancer!
Maybe Ramsey lives on a hill in a big house…but he helped us KEEP ours; so I am not pointing any fingers. We are glad we are self-sufficient and not expecting money to “stabilize” our lives when our frugalness should.
If people feel shamed & triggered by what Dave Ramsey said…it’s time for self-examination & possibly a change of thinking / mindsets – not attacking the messenger. Sometimes the truth hurts.
So, did everyone accept the stimulus checks…….
Dave Ramsey is a vile, nasty man.
He is abrupt, proud and rude.
He sits atop his million plus mansion on a hill near me. I don’t fault him for having a beautiful, big home, however, i believe his is a racket that shames Christians who want to be good stewards, and feel like they have failed. He preys on guilt and shame, and fleeces off of these people.
I will never, ever support Dave Ramsey and his tactics.
Dave Ramsey – simple and amazing!!! Spot on! “…you’re already screwed!”
The language was uncalled for in this article. Some time we need a little refund from the govt. I pay taxes in my 70s & let the govt have my $30 refund to help the debt. That should count for something. I will work untill I can no longer do same. Thank you for a little Grace whomever.Lol
He’s absolutely correct! I’ve talked to many a worker in Walmart and they said that when people got the last stimulus check, it was a stampede! People were buying all kinds of stupid stuff – but mostly TVs – two and three TVs – just TVs! $1200 worth of TVs! They said it was apparent that Walmart was the winner in that exchange – that Walmart got all those stimulus checks! And yes, if a mere $600 can really change your life, you didn’t have a life! That’s not even a months rent anywhere! And yet the total bill that we are going to have to pay back as a nation it’s going to be huge! Apparently the people who say that Dave is poor shaming, have not been to planet earth where we all have to deal with something called reality! I just recently lost my job because of Biden and his communist rule – as he has reversed tax cuts for the small airplane industry, which has immediately nixed my job! And I still say keep the 600 because I’ll be paying more than $600 back! Keep saying that, Dave! Rock on!!! 💥👊😇
He right , you are
Couldn’t have said it better! Thanks Dave.
I grew up poor. Mother didn’t save, she drank it away. When I was old enough to work, my paychecks went toward household expenses and a savings account. Saving was often a struggle but money was available in a pinch when times got hard. The Lord has abundantly enriched my life. I taught myself to give generously to God, my family and my savings. I don’t live a luxurious life style but I have enough.
Here’s mine; Mr. Ramsey! I just lost all respect for you!!! The Srimulus check is not intended to change anyone’s life!! It is a stop gap measure to help thos who are out of work to buy groceries and in needed a few medical supplies.
I pray God opens your eyes to see what this is all about and how He is using even the Demon~C~RATS to work His plans!!
DAvid C….it is not the place of the federal government to take money from one tax payer to give to another tax payer as a charitable work. Nor even worse to borrow money to provide charitable aide to citizens then put future generations of Americans deeper into debt. Government does not create wealth it only confiscates it from those in the private sector who create wealth through creation of good and services. It is the role of the Church and private philanthropy to offer financial aide to the poor. Poor and unconstitutional spending by our politicians and bureaucrats along with overreaction to a new flu and usurpation of limited authority is what has created this financial crisis and the current group of people in our government will never fix this problem.
DAvid, I agree you!
These other people just don’t get it, do they? They have been blessed in ways not everyone has. They look down on people like me and millions of others, as if it is our fault that we lost our business to anti-Trump thugs or that Biden’s handlers just threw many thousands of workers’ jobs away for politicalreasons only leaving them without insurance; it’s not our fault that a family member with an appointment for a life-saving surgery was postponed indefinitely to make room for “COVID” patients, and so that family member died leaving behind a spouse and young children. Ramsey must live in another reality than billions of people all over the globe who are all together being purposely destroyed by enemies unseen and seen who are taking over the whole world, getting ready for the Anti-christ (though they may not know it).
We should not depend on the government because as Christians we really should be dependent on God to provide for our needs instead. As for the stimulus money most of it goes to foreign aide. It is my understanding that the last stimulus package, only 7 or 8 percent went to help Americans. Guess where the other 93 percent went to? Other countries who hate us. I think that bill needed serious pork trimmed off of it. And the future generations will have to bear the brunt of the rising debt in the U.S. The more people depend on handouts the more poverty we have.
One generation of “handouts” begets another generation of the same.
Proof that has played out for generations. The current party in control of our government wants us to be stuck in that mode forever. Don’t be a part of that frame of mind.
Agree it’s called entitlement! Or in the Christian world, you name it, and claim it. Just because your a Christian. Talking fancy cars, Luxury items, wealth, big houses, material items!!!
He is blunt.
The Bible is also pretty blunt at times.
Sounds straight out of Proverbs to me.
The more people depend on hand outs the more poverty is taking place, and it is generational , I have seen it happen, For years I have volunteered for a food bank and clothes closet.
I’m applaud Mr. Ramsey for being bold and calling out what is actually going on. The government wants to belittle us and have us depend on them, but God is our source and provider and we have to rest in him. He was correct if people think $600 or even $2000 is going to save lives we are selling out cheap and showing God that his word is not true! All have faith in our provider and hope in what his word says he will not let us down if we seek his face! God bless the bold and true statement🙏🏽❤️
I agree but your statements are crude and offensive and not reflecting Jesus. You do profess faith in Christ, don’t you?
The more you take from the government, the more the government controls your life. Our current leadership does not values lives, values, our heritage or guard our future. They are not concerned about the citizens of this country as much as they are concerned about passing bills that give millions to other countries, add to the debt of our citizenry and try to placate us with $600.
Then put your faith to work and TRUST our God Jesus to provide you the job he has for you he has better things in store for you. Trust God because he never fails but if you trust Government you will fall with them and great will be that fall.
I think the most troubling part of the token assistance is the massive weight the government has now placed on future generations. The amount actually provided to the people and that taken from them is vastly different. The money is NOT free. And where is MOST of it going? There is little accountability.
D.R. is completely out of touch with what people have dealt with the past two years. Did he sleep through it all?
The “governments” (Fed., States, Cities, China, and “fraidy-cat” churches took and continue to take the jobs away. Last month, Biden’s handlers took away more, a huge uncountable number more.
And they are adding millions more jobless illegals. D.R. needs to try to teach Democrats how government and economy should be handled.
The “World Economic Forum” has clearly planned and publicly stated their horrible plans to eliminate 90% of world population by a certain date. To do this they need control over fearful and submissive people. To do this, they must make the people poor and hungry and hopeless and children uneducated and glad for $600 from anywhere.
Some of these were business owners who still owe taxes and other business-related expenses in addition to family needs. Then they find themselves on the street like refugees in other countries.
WAKE UP, DAVE RAMSEY! If you want to be helpful, quit speaking only to the Wall Street rich.
Where have you been, DAVE RAMSEY, while regular people are suffering, locked down, fined for going to church, threatened, shot by George Soros’ mercenaries, told they have “Covid-19″ with noone allowed to visit them while they are slowly killed instead of being given life-saving treatment.” DAVE RAMSEY, I challenge you to care about real people who can’t afford to pay you.
bravo dave ramsey im near 70 years old and maybe it was a very temporary blessing the stimulus money but it certainly DID NOT by no means change my life. being productive in life has helped change me and society . You aught not to be working for yourself but also it helps others . for they need to earn a living also . so they can help others. we aught not to have a parasitic mind set where we expect to live off others.
besides they are not living off the gov. they are living us hardworking taxpayers EXCLUDING those who CANT work everybody else should work i know teenagers who have part time jobs so i say bravo to you teens and thank you for being a responsible person
I agree with his point that we rely too much on gov’t help. Almost always strings attached. Lord help us not rely on anyone but you. In your presence is fullness of joy. In Jesus Name
I agree with Dave. The goal of the “elites” is to make people dependant on the Government Nanny State, instead of God. God must be our source! Jesus told us to tithe and give and “lay up our treasure in Heaven. I have seen signifigant increase in my life right through this pandemic by acting on this principle. Isaac sowed in a time of famine and reaped 100 fold. Genesis 26. God is our source, not our job, relatives, Government, etc. We will go through tribulation establishing that truth in our lives but it is worth it. Like King David said, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not lack…..Lord, I confess and believe your Word today, bless your dear people in Yeshua’s Mighty Name. Ephesians 3.20.
Thanks Dave. I strongly agree that the give me, give me, give me mentality has gotten us closer and closer to socialism which it is a proven fact that it never works. We will always have the poor with us and yes it is a biblical mandate that we must help them. Sometimes that help looks like teaching a trade, giving a job or helping with family issues and sometimes it’s money. Notice I said WE need to help, not the government. I mean we as individuals, but especially, we as the one church, the church of Jesus Christ, our only savior. I would like to have control of where my hard earned money goes to help others and not the government have that control. As it is, I am funding things (through my taxes) that I totally disagree with; things that I do not believe hindering more than helping.
I agree with Dave Ramsey
We have the Welfare state of 2 generations in my Black community to show it does not work. Remind us Oh Lord to place our trust in you only, not on the arm of flesh. Remind us you are our provider and work honors you! Forgive us for our greed and from robbing you in tithes and offerings In Jesus name
Amen
Thank you for Mr. Ramsey, Lord. Truth isn’t always what people want to hear. Bless him for telling us the cold hard truth. Keep speaking truth to us through your people. We need to hear it.
We need truth and we need You.
I agree with Mr. Ramsey. Another angle……..things do not need to be as expensive as they are……… I’m not against having money or the rich for being rich (more power to you)………but on the other hand the Bible teaches to SHARE ONE ANOTHER’s burdens, not create more debt…….AND the Bible talks about money being the root of ALL evil………money is and of itself not evil, but also to whom much is given, much is required………the politicians seem to want to support the money grab because then they don’t give THEIR money to help, but push it over to government………wrong….I think if we were able stop the instant gratification, slow down and think things thru……I believe there is enough to go around for everyone……….if people take the time to have a relationship with others, we can help out more and not be so dysfunctional in the ideas of money, which is only a symptom of a bigger problem, lack of Christ in their lives…….I think the natural progression of wealth in a Biblical way, instead of the forced and coerced understanding of money, is the real value in sanctification.
I pray that folks see the real value of peoples lives and don’t try to shove materialistic ideas and things down others throats, BUT be gentle to express the LOVE of God on themselves and others. And I pray people also understand the importance of knowing not everyone thinks the same, it is ok to be DIFFERENT…………We are ALL God’s sooty children……that we have Godly/loving thoughts and actions about ourselves and others. In the name of Jesus Amen and Amen.
One correction it’s the “LOVE” of money that’s the root of all evil (see 1 Timothy 6:10).
CeCe … you beat me to it! The correction shifts the emphasis entirely.
one more correction, it’s the love of money that is “A” root of all kinds of evil
(not THE root…)
I think PRIDE, “I will be like God”, is THE root of all kinds of evil…
I dont hear empathy in what he is saying, but there is a truth inside of what he is saying, if you look through what appears to be a callous shell covering the truth. 1. Government is not meant to save us, God, ourselves and the church are meant to help us in times of need. 2. loving and caring for others (emotions as well as wallets) is a key part of the process of helping those in need. 3. saying how bad a situation is may help bring awareness of it, but to truly help it you need to offer. solution (which he has many of in his company, but none listed here).
Teaching people life-skills is more helpful than giving them money that they don’t know how to use. Volunteer to teach at your church or an organization that offers help. A good place to volunteer is Prison Fellowship Academy which gives life-changing classes which are biblically-based, including Boundaries, Conflict Resolution, and Change Plan as well as Dave Ramsey’s Financial Training.
I agree wholeheartedly. Thanks, Dave!
I don’t agree. Ramsey says all the time that your greatest wealth building is from your job but so many people LOST their jobs and need some money to help put food on the table.
He is spot on this. I have been against the stimulus checks from the get go. I had a renter that got 1 month of his rent paid: he was gainfully employed and was always early on his rent payment. Here’s the deal, lots of people will take advantage of “help” when it is offered. When you have families who have been on welfare programs for generations, they are going to always go for “help” financially when they donn’t need it. The renters comment to me was, we might as get this help because it is there to be had. We live in times more than any other time in life where people have the expectation of always receiving help in many fashions. It is deplorable. Meanwhile our current government is trying it’s best to destroy our country spiritually, economically, and trying to purge us to Communisim.
He’s right! Dave is not a malicious man- his remark is likely addressed to Christians who are in full blown idolatry if their trusting in the government to be their Jehovah Jireh (Provider!!)
Printing more greenbacks is sealing the fate of our children in an already bankrupt nation whose indebted to nations who HATE us- so sad😢
I agree.
I would use different words but the content of Dave’s remarks are on target. The big movement by big government is make us dependent on government not on Jesus and our God-given ability.
