I Prayed have prayed
Lord, please grant Dr. Päivi Räsänen and Bishop Juhana Pohjola courage and strength as they face criminal charges for their religious speech. May Finland’s court and the Finnish people see through this assault on freedom, and may our own land steer clear of this dangerous path. We pay that religious liberty will be upheld and hearts in Finland and around the world will turn to You.

Finnish officials are sending mixed signals in the new year. Even as they rightly speak out against religious persecution abroad, they also brazenly pursue criminal “hate speech” charges at home against a Christian leader.

Why? For tweeting out a picture of Bible verses.

A criminal trial starts Monday, and we need to pay prayerful attention.

First, the good news. Earlier this week the Foreign Affairs Committee chairman of Finland’s Parliament sent a letter to a counterpart in Pakistan condemning the death sentence of a pastor. Pakistan authorities arrested Zafar Bhatti a decade ago on charges of blasphemy — a charge he was reportedly tortured into confessing. And after years of imprisonment, just this month a Pakistani court sentenced Pastor Bhatti to death.

The Finnish chairman wrote, ”Violations against human rights and religious freedom cannot be tolerated anywhere.”

Those are laudable words from the chairman. And they are promising, too, considering Finland’s recent election to the UN Human Rights Commission (along with the United States) — even as troubled as that body is.

Unfortunately, the chairman’s words are not sinking in with some of his colleagues at home. The Finnish Prosecutor General seems particularly tone deaf as she moves forward with criminal charges against a national legislator.

ivi Räsänen is a Finnish Member of Parliament (MP) who a decade ago was the country’s Interior Minister and chair of the Christian Democrat Party. She is also a medical doctor, mother, and grandmother. Räsänen landed in hot water when she used Twitter and other social media to question her own church leadership’s decision to partner with an LGBT celebratory event in 2019. Her post did not include derogatory or violent imagery (you can see it here). It just highlighted verses from the Book of Romans.

In a 2020 interview with First Things, Räsänen said, The purpose [of] my tweet was in no way to insult sexual minorities. My criticism was aimed at the leadership of the church.

Still that tweet was enough for police to call the MP in for questioning. The authorities also took an interest in a booklet Dr. Räsänen wrote in 2004 related to her church’s position on sexuality, as well as a televised interview on the matter in 2018.

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International, which is supporting Räsänen, notes that neither the tweet nor the broadcast violated any rules — they’re still posted on those platforms. Also, as disturbing as the law enforcement interrogations are in this story, ultimately the police reportedly recommended against prosecution on at least two counts.

But Prosecutor General Raija Toiviainen is pressing forward with “hate speech” charges all the same — charges that could lead to fines or even years in prison. Toiviainen suggests Räsänen’s statements were “likely to cause intolerance, contempt, and hatred towards homosexuals.” According to Christianity Today, the prosecutor concluded those expressed views “violate the equality and dignity of homosexuals and thus transcend freedom of speech and religion.”

The trial for Räsänen and a Lutheran bishop who helped publish her booklet begins on Monday, January 24. She said this week that she has “a calm mind ahead of the trial” and is hoping for an important victory for freedom of speech and religion.

Räsänen added, “If I’m convicted, I think that the worst consequence would not be the fine against me, or even the prison sentence, it would be the censorship. So, now it is time to speak. Because the more we are silent, the narrower the space for freedom of speech and religion grows.”

What is your prayer for MP ivi Räsänen in the week ahead? And how will you pray for our own nation as Finland — our fellow democratic republic — blazes ahead on this dangerous path?

Father, we thank You for people like Räsänen and the Lutheran bishop who were brave in speaking out against sin. We pray that Your justice prevail. We pray that You will be glorified in the court proceedings and Your love be shown to those who would show hatred of You and Your truth. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Father, thank you for MP Päivi Räsänen. I pray the court would rule in her favor and that of religious freedom. Strengthen her and if they do not listen, may she be a voice for you in prison. I pray for Finland that they would not go in the direction of quieting people of faith. May the people of Finland be bold to speak your word.

What is going on in Finland is but a stones throw from our own country. As we pray for Finland, let us continue praying for America.

My heart breaks for Dr. Räsänen and the persecution she has been subjected to in my birth country where freedom of worship has always been accepted. I am so disappointed that the progressive lefts ideas are even celebrated when the country has The Cross on its flag.

Our prayers are for them and may they bring glory to God throughout this ordeal.

Dear Heavenly Father, Päivi Räsänen is Your daughter, who has spoken Your truth from Your Word. IT says no harm will befall the righteous; that those who deal faithfully are Your delight. Would You demonstrate Your pleasure in Your daughter’s integrity? I pray Prosecutor General Raija Toiviainen will be censored by You Father, the Just Judge. I pray as a result of YOUR ruing, “the space for speech and religion” will be enlarged beyond human comprehension. I hope all our prayers for Dr. Päivi Räsänen and Bishop Juhana Pohjola please You Father. Our hope is in Jesus Christ, the Perfecter of our faith. In Christ, there is NO deceit. Amen

Proverbs 12:17He who speaks the truth declares what is right, but a false witness speaks deceit.
21No harm befalls the righteous, but the wicked are filled with trouble.
22Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but those who deal faithfully are His delight.
1 Peter 2:22 He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.
Hebrews 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Dear God,

I pray that this legal case allows for great progress in the fight against evil censorship. Lord, please strengthen, confirm, enlighten, and highlight laws that protect freedom of speech in Finland and throughout the world. Rise up oh Lord against this attack on your word. Let this legal case open up free and open discourse about your love for all people. We all have sin in our lives. But your gospel redeems us. Please don’t let church leadership hold back truth from your word. Give the church leadership courses and wisdom.
Thank you, Lord. Amen!

When speech is not free, people are not free. It is a short step from imprisoning speech to imprisoning the speakers; from silencing speech to silencing the speakers; from killing speech to killing the speakers. We should all be alarmed by this as it is happening in the U.S. frequently with our cancel culture – it is only a short step to the next step. God’s word is truth and the truth will set us free. (John 8:32) Too bad the Truth is now often labeled as “hate speech” providing a reason to silence it. But even if we are silent “the stones themselves will cry out”. I pray that our Father God, who is the source of our hope, will fill you with joy and peace because you trust in Him. And I pray an abundant overflow of confident hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. I ask this in the incomparable Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dear Lord and God our Father…please inspire those in leadership in Finland to do as they should, not what they want to do. In a democratic republic, they have freedom of speech and freedom of religion so therefore, these two have done nothing wrong. Please Lord, let the leaders see their error in thinking and release them since they’ve done nothing wrong in the name of Jesus we pray. Amen

This trial is tragic but I pray it awakens many to intercede for the freedom to speak the truth of Scripture to a culture caught in crisis from calling wrong right. Free religious speech has been silenced and penalized by the aggressive free speech of a culture that moralizes sin.

Hebrews 4:12 “For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to dividing asunder the soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
We must use the the Word of God to cast down all that thoughts and intents of mankind bringing them into submission to the will of God. Let the Word of God do the convicting.
