A federal court on Tuesday blocked Alabama Republicans from implementing their preferred House map ahead of this year’s midterms, potentially preventing Republicans from picking up an additional seat via gerrymandering.

Following the Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act ruling earlier this year, Alabama sought to revert to a 2023 map — with only one Democratic-leaning district — that had previously been blocked in court.

But a three-judge panel Tuesday prevented the state from using that map, mandating that Alabama use a map that has two majority Black, blue-leaning seats.

The ruling adds another chapter to the ongoing national fight over redistricting and the balance between state authority and federal oversight in elections. Alabama Republicans argue the court is improperly interfering with the state’s ability to draw its own congressional districts, while opponents claim the GOP-backed map unfairly diluted Black voting power in violation of the Voting Rights Act.

The three-judge panel said it could not allow voters to cast ballots under what it described as a map “tainted by intentional race-based discrimination.” Republicans, however, remain confident the Supreme Court will ultimately side with the state. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall vowed to continue the fight, saying victory is only a matter of time.

The dispute comes as redistricting battles intensify nationwide ahead of the midterms, with both parties seeking every possible advantage in a narrowly divided Congress.
