Who Is the Billionaire Trying to Hack His Way to Eternal Life?
Bryan Johnson, a tech CEO and health influencer, doesn’t want himself or other people to die, and he is willing to use all the technology in the world to make that happen–but is that a choice he should make? For as long as man has walked the Earth, he has wanted to cheat death. Today’s world just provides more tools than ever to attempt to do so. Bryan Johnson’s story and purpose are an interesting one. His personal crusade against human aging is bringing new attention to the philosophical and ethical questions that spring up from augmenting man with technology. This speaks to a very intrinsic (and flawed) facet of human nature that has been experiencing a renaissance in recent decades with the development of transhumanism.

Who is Bryan Johnson? And what does transhumanism mean to a Biblical worldview?
Early Life
Bryan Johnson was born in Provo, Utah, and raised nearby in Springville. He is the middle child of three, and was raised in the Church of Latter-Day Saints. His parents divorced at a young age, and he, his mom, and his siblings went to live with his stepfather, who owned a trucking company. At 19, he went to Ecuador for two years as a Latter-Day Saints missionary—a custom that nearly all Mormon youth engage in.
Later on, he graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003 and then earned a Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Chicago in 2007. Throughout his college years in the early 2000s, he also kept himself busy with multiple business ventures, helping to pay his way through school while also gaining experience as a serial entrepreneur. These early startups range from selling cell phones to building communication platforms to trying his hand in real estate.
A Career in Entrepreneurship
In 2007, Johnson started an e-commerce company called Braintree. The company was a success. Braintree purchased Venmo before it was sold to PayPal in 2013, earning hundreds of millions of dollars for Johnson. After that, he started the OS Fund in 2014, showing his increasing interest in technology by investing in early-stage science endeavors.
In 2016, he graduated from investing in new technology to getting involved in it himself. He founded Kernel, a tech company that specializes in designing non-invasive brain-reading devices. Johnson has been spearheading the development of hardware platforms that use high-tech neuro-imaging software. The applications for such devices are vast. It’s been a hit for investors, and it received millions of dollars by 2020.
Project Blueprint
It was around this time that Johnson, now an established multi-millionaire, began his anti-aging journey. In 2021, he announced “Project Blueprint”—an expansive initiative that is attempting to artificially extend the human body’s lifespan, starting with his own. Johnson is using every health hack and medical expert he can muster to maintain a strict lifestyle regimen that involves everything from technologically optimized exercise routines to a completely plant-based dietary plan. He has focused his resources on constantly monitoring all of his bodily functions. From his brainwaves to his reproductive health, he’s technologically micro-managing everything he can. Johnson has even received multiple blood plasma transfusions, one of which was from his own son, just to try to optimize his health.
The Danger of Transhumanism
What does this all mean from a Biblical worldview? Nothing Good. Johnson’s project is just another attempt by people to bastardize God’s creation. Transhumanism fundamentally seeks to augment and “perfect” the human form so that we may transcend our inherent limitations (In other words, become like “gods”). This has never been a conducive way of life, and it never will. Many men throughout history have sought everlasting health to no avail. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. (Psalm 103:14) And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. (Ecclesiastes 12:7) All in all, it’s safe to say that we can’t “bio hack” our way to eternity. Everlasting life can only be achieved through a relationship with the Messiah.
How Can We Pray for Bryan Johnson?
First and foremost, we should pray that the plans and purposes of Bryan Johnson and other like-minded transhumanists be rendered null. Trying to circumvent God’s design never leads to anything good for people.
Secondly, we should pray for Bryan Johnson himself. Pray that whatever false teaching he received in his former life, coming from a Mormon family, does not prevent him from seeking a relationship with the true God. Pray that Christ-like examples be allowed to enter his life, and that his heart and mind would be opened to Jesus’ teaching and purpose.
Lastly, pray that Bryan Johnson’s zeal and drive for improving people’s lives be used by God to represent his kingdom. Pray that Bryan Johnson repents and focuses his energy on seeking Jesus.

Abba, You alone know the heart of every person and we know it is not Your will that any should be lost. We joyously pray for your will to be done in this man’s life, and that You would create in him a heart ready to follow You. Thank you for this man’s many gifts, and his enthusiasm for helping mankind. Thank you that with a changed heart he will turn that enthusiasm and use those gifts to do Your will here on earth, as it is in heaven.
I pray Father for Bryan Johnson salvation deliverance and freedom, I pray you would change his heart and mind to the truth, and that you would bring him Father into your kingdom in Jesus might name Amen
Great article exposing transhumanism Tyler! I had not heard about Bryan Johnson before so I appreciate the information. As you say, we need to pray that those who want to live forever through hacks and technology would come to know Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can give us an incorruptible body and eternal life. Thanks again for writing about this important topic.
I agree with T.K. Robinson’s view that Brian Johnson’s motivation is wrong in promoting transhumanism. C. S. Lewis said in his book, “Murder in the Cathedral”, “… it is the greatest of treason to do the right thing for the wrong reason.” Mormon’s salvation is based largely on good works rather than salvation by grace. Their redemption is to a type of “godhood” based on personal merit. They seek the production of physical bodies for the inhabitation of “pre-existing” spirits. This analysis is based on material from the book, “The Facts on the Mormon Church” by John Ankerberg, et. al. From reviewing this book, I can see that Brian Johnson wants to obtain this highest level by modifying his lifestyle.
However, I think we as intercessors might be throwing out the baby with the bathwater. The article takes the view that all transhumanism is evil and should be opposed. In my view it is a tool just like all other technology. Just like your cell phone, it can be used for evil or for good. Just because a cell phone can be used for evil purposes does not mean that we should stop using a cell phone because it is used for evil purposes.
Transhumanism can be used for good purposes. When I worked for the State of Texas, we purchased prosthetic devices so individuals could return to work after an accident. It is my understanding that the technology is developing that these devices can restore these individuals almost to the level of activity these individuals had before the accident. Are we saying as intercessors that we should deny these individuals the opportunity to have as close to a normal life as before?
I believe in living in divine health. I see this as the highest level of health. E. W. Kenyon lived at that level, but not too many others. I believe in divine healing. Jesus, Peter the apostle and Smith Wigglesworth operated at that level. Again, most do not get to that level. Therefore, most have to rely on medical science for their health. I have difficulty understanding why we as intercessors should oppose any tool available for people to live in health.
Transhumanism has a wicked focus. It is what has been funded to transplant fetal parts with rodents, etc. There is much exposure in the early starts of transhumanism through the University of Arizona.
Sometimes throwing the other than Creator given “baby” out with the bathwater is necessary, so as not to mix what is set aside as Holy unto GOD with what is perverse.
Would that we, Messianic & pure CHRISTians, acheive walking in what ones like Smith Wigglesworth and Kenyon did rather than relying on what is other than YHVH created and intended?
ABBA forgive us and hear our cry to be restored to your ancient paths. Amen.
My understanding of transhumanism is the integration of man and machine. There may be other definitions and other purposes. The research I am familiar with has to do with developing prosthetic devices (artificial arms and legs.) It involves making “robot” arms and “robot” legs to go on the ends of limbs that have been amputated. This allows the individuals involved to function as close as possible to people without amputations.
It is my understanding that they are designed these devices to respond to action and reactions to the human host. Obviously, they use technology to integrate these responses. As the technology evolves, the fine motor skills of the devices should improve. I have no clue as to why you say this is evil.
As far as I know, they do not use rodents and transplanted dead baby parts to make these items. As far as I know, they do not promote abortion or killing babies.
I am not familiar with the University of Arizona Research. I cannot respond to that research or its motivations.
I will be praying for Bryan Johnson, his family, and his contacts. After having lived in the Salt Lake City area for over 40 years, we know that Mormonism teaches “As man is, God once was. As God is, man may become”. It is the teachings found within that religion that compel men to strive to become gods of their own planet, via their own temple works and religious efforts. Their “Jesus” is a spirit-brother of Lucifer. This belief is not true, and their Jesus is not the same Jesus of the bible.
I will be praying that Jesus would have mercy on this man’s soul, and that our Lord would reveal Himself not only to Bryan, but to others who desperately need to know the REAL truth: Jesus Himself.
