An American journalist has been abducted in Iraq, raising fresh concerns about terrorism and the safety of U.S. citizens in the region. The incident also highlights the continued threat posed by Iranian-backed groups operating in the Middle East.

The Iraqi Interior Ministry said in a March 31 statement that a foreign journalist was kidnapped by “unknown individuals,” but did not disclose the journalist’s nationality or the location of the incident. She was identified as freelance journalist Shelly Kittleson by Al-Monitor, one of the media outlets she works for.
Kittleson contributes articles to Al-Monitor, which covers the Middle East extensively. The news outlet said it is “deeply alarmed” by Kittleson’s kidnapping on March 31 and called for her safe and immediate release.

The Iraqi ministry said that security forces tracked the kidnappers and pursued their vehicle, which overturned as they attempted to flee. Authorities arrested one of the suspects and seized a vehicle, according to a statement written in Arabic. No details were provided about the detained suspect.
This kidnapping underscores the persistent danger posed by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq, particularly groups like Kataib Hezbollah, which has long been linked to terrorism and regional instability. Dylan Johnson, U.S. assistant secretary of state for global public affairs, addressed the kidnapping, sharing that the apprehended suspect has ties to Kataib Hezbollah.
The involvement of a suspect tied to an Iranian-aligned militia highlights the broader geopolitical tensions at play. Iran’s network of proxy groups across the Middle East has repeatedly been used to exert influence and intimidate adversaries, creating an environment where journalists, researchers, and civilians alike are at risk. For Americans, especially, the threat remains severe, as evidenced by the U.S. State Department’s highest-level travel warning for Iraq.
For intercessors, this situation is a call to pray for the safe return of this journalist and for protection over all Americans abroad. Father we pray that Shelly is freed and that you would comfort her family and colleagues and friend. Draw Shelly and her family to you if they don’t know you, let them cry out to you for her freedom and safety. Turn this all around Dad please get the glory from this in Jesus might name Amen
Father we ask for Your mercy and grace for this reporter, she chose to go into a country that was dangerous and anti American, Lord forgive her, watch over her and bring her safely back to the united states where her freedom is guaranteed we all make mistakes Lord, help this woman and protect her as only you can, be with her loved ones as they wait for her return. This is a very unfortunate development. Not surprising considering the crazed idiots in the Middle East pray, Lord, that This lady will be freed soon, and that punishment will come to the guilty parties. Thank you Jesus.
