I Prayed have prayed
Lord, help the tough times in our lives be opportunities for us to draw closer to You.
Reading Time: 5 minutes

The year was 1981 (Yeah, I know, that dates me!). I was asked to go to Poland, still under iron-fisted communist rule, with a small team from my native Holland to help run a week-long Christian camp for young adults. I found out that most had spent a year’s wages to attend the camp. All they wanted was Bible study and prayer. Morning, noon and night. Never mind the fun and games we had planned. They wanted their money’s worth in spiritual food. The camp was being watched, the secret police made a visit and made it clear to Waldemar, the leading elder, that they knew we were there, and that they had a list of all the supply items that had been “left behind” for their use the previous year. Both the oppression and the inner joy, freedom, and hunger for God I saw in the young people deeply touched me. When the time came to say goodby, I told Waldemar: “I had no idea life was so tough for you guys. I’ll really pray for you.” . . .

He put his big Polish hands on my shoulder, looked me in the eyes and said; “You don’t get it, do you. We know who the enemy is. He wears a uniform. Jesus Christ is everything to us. We have to depend on Him for everything, even bread, potatoes and rice. But you are going back to the West where your grocery shelves are stocked full and you are insured from the cradle to the grave. You don’t know it, but Satan is lulling you to sleep with abundance, and when persecution comes – and it will come some day – you will not have the faith to withstand it.” . . .

As we rode back West and transitioned from impoverished, oppressed Poland and East Germany into wealthy, prosperous Western Europe and back home to The Netherlands, it dawned on me that they were free. On the inside. And we were the ones enslaved – by our abundance, which was keeping us from having to rely on God for everything and therefore struggling to walk daily and closely with Him. Need is still one of the greatest driving forces for intimacy with an unseen God.

Waldemar’s words always stayed with me as a warning in the back of my head. And it came roaring back last week, almost 40 years after they were spoken, as I asked the Lord how to pray for The Return, the big prayer gathering in DC: “Lord, what are we, starting with me and mine, to repent of that grieves you the most? . . .

Creature comforts, comfort zones, things we as Christians in the wealthy West have taken for granted as always available to us. Things that have made complete surrender to God, and dependence on God for our very survival, optional.

Those worldly comforts have crowded Him to the back of our minds and hearts, and have given Him a place in our lives, but not the place. Not the preeminence He deserves and needs to have.

The DC gathering fell far short of repenting of our sins. It focused more on the sins of our nation. And in my humble opinion it misunderstood repentance. Repentance is not a prayer, or a confession of sin. Those precede repentance. Repentance (metanoia in Greek) means to change one’s mind or purpose, to make a 180 degree turn in direction, and that is the mindset needed for transformation from above. It is a decision leading to action, not words.

If you liked this article- don’t forget to share it with others!

Why is that so needed today? Because today’s church culture has grown spiritually weak. The majority of the people populating church seats do not have a strong daily walk with God, have little or no Bible knowledge, and are not full of the Holy Spirit. And many of the churches that house them have moved away from teaching them to connect with God through prayer and being in the Word, from loving one another deeply and from reaching their communities for Christ, and to exciting activities, big Sunday morning shows and corporate growth models.

Those do not build faith. Those do not prepare us for what is to come. I have heard from various prophetically astute people and mature intercessors that a period of suffering is going to come upon the church. It echoes what national prayer leaders heard from God twenty years ago when they sought God as to why revival had not come a decade of crying out for it in nationwide Concerts of Prayer. The answer they received: “It will come, but in the wake of suffering.”

In other words: there will be a rude awakening before there will be a spiritual awakening.  . . .

But that should not surprise us. Europe has long been post-Christian. Christianity is regarded there by most as a thing of the past, as constraining, narrow-minded and a hindrance to progressive thinking. While the governments there do not persecute Christians, the people often do. And that is mild in comparison to the persecution faced by Christians in China and much of the Islamic world.

Interestingly enough, the church is declining the most in the “free” countries, and is growing the most in countries where Christians are persecuted to the point of death. The fastest growing churches today? Iran and China!

So it should not dismay us that God would visit a period of suffering on us. According to James 1:2-4 it purifies and strengthens our faith, it builds our Christian character and solidifies our steadfastness. It perfects us. Because when you are persecuted for your faith, God is no longer optional. He is your everything.

Which leads me back to repentance. I mentioned that repentance is a 180 degree turn. In this case, away from lukewarmth and attachment to worldly comforts and pleasures and towards spiritual preparedness.

That is the other half of what I heard when I prayed about what I should repent of. In the words of Martin Luther in the hymn A Mighty Fortress: “Let goods and kindred go.”

That is the key to spiritual preparedness for suffering. Let go of our attachment to worldly comfort. Consider it of much lesser value than the grace of God and nothing you can or should depend on. Think of yourself as an exile, of one just passing through on your way to heaven. Attach yourself to the kingdom of God instead. Remember the words “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face; and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.” In short: love Jesus more than you love the things of earth.

The apostle Peter helps us with this:

“Therefore, preparing your minds for action and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.
1 Peter 1:13-16.

Preparing your minds for action. I love that. We can’t anticipate what suffering will come to us, what it will look like and how it will affect us. But apparently we can prepare spiritually nevertheless.

We can:
– Be sober-minded (i.e. be alert and prayerful, and not asleep or stick our heads in the sand)
– Set our hope fully on the grace of God with an eternal perspective, namely that it is not
about the quality and comfort of life here on earth but about the grace brought to us
when Christ is revealed – our eternal life with Him.
– Renounce worldly passions: creature comfort, too much entertainment, false idols,
the pursuit of financial prosperity, addictions. You name it.
– Be holy in the awareness that we were bought by the blood of Christ (vs. 18,19) to be
in intimate relationship with a loving, but holy God. . . .

And above all, do not be alarmed or dismayed. Tough times lead to a deeper knowledge and walk with the Father and nothing is of greater worth than that.

I believe there is a remnant of believers who want more than church programs and clubs. I agree that pastors don’t teach their flocks the basics. However, even when certain topics were not being taught or shared, I pursued. I had only a few mentors during my Christian walk who poured into me and encouraged me. It was not the pastor, elder, or deacon. I believe it is time to get back to the basics. When I am at work, I speak to the LORD. I have received answers when I quiet myself as I work. When I received the answers, everything stops. As for the article, I was born in the USA, but life has been no cake walk. Suffering comes in different forms, but the Gospel will still prevail. Only Jesus knows how repented or not. I am not into trying to earn God’s approval. I want to be in His Presence.

I am sorry that he was disappointed in the Return, and the repentance that was done there. I was there and had a totally different opinion. First, it was not just national repentance that was done. Secondly, individual repentance can and should be done more often than once a year and in a large group setting. Thirdly, God did, and I believe does, call a nation to corporate repentance and solemn assembly. Fourth, I believe that God does hear and forgive. Fifth, we do not have to live in a Communist country to endure hardship and trouble.

I agree with the reply. I do want to note that in this country there is freedom to disagree and the author of the article has his ‘right’ to disagree. However, God looks on the heart. I will not judge. I have studied humility (https://wheatlandministries.blogspot.com/search?q=humility) deeply. Any move to humility when it is sincere and from the heart and turning to God is important in God’s sight. I participated in the Return via internet, and was so glad that Jonathan Cahn was encouraged by Franklin Graham bringing people also to pray–although it was separate of the Return. Both of these events, which I believe may be called movements, were from the heart of many recognizing the need to confess our sins. They started with the sins of our Nation. Our Nation is made up of People, and the sins confessed were sins of the people, and that includes myself. I sensed that God was moving us during this time of prayers.

For me, humility does not stop with the end of the Return event. It is a way of life, many times I am on my knees or bowed before my God (Yahweh) in prayer humbling myself. It is my heart that our churches will learn to kneel once again before our Lord and Savior, seeking his wisdom in our affairs.

It is so REFRESHING to read this article. I believe it hits the nail on the head and is in keeping with biblical Christianity. This is a moment of sobriety in the Christian history of this nation to return to our First Love and realize that being united in Christ means the “fellowship of His suffering,” that we may be transformed into His likeness. In Revelation 2, Christ warned that the church who had left Him, their First Love, would have their lampstand removed. Perhaps in keeping with that sentiment is why the Church in the USA has ceased to be salty; indeed, we need trade our trends and seeker-friendly idols in our churches for authentic, passionate devotion to Christ and the lost. Thank you for posting this.

The USA sends more missionaries than any other country. Richard Wurmbrand spent 14 years in prison in Romania. He then went to the USA. He said he suffered more in the west than in Romania.

I’ll take a pass on this article. Let me just state a few things. 1. The Polish man who Christ was “everything” to was given a choice of : Christ or nothing. He didn’t have materialism dangling in his face daily or pornography, etc. . 2. He states that when persecution comes we won’t have faith. Well … Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the WORD. Persecution can cause us to EXERCISE our faith put it won’t “give” us faith. 3. He sanctifies us by HisTruth, His Word is Truth. You don’t get “sanctified “ by being beaten up and thrown in prison. 4. Prosperity is good. The Word states He has pleasure in the prosperity of his servants. How you handle that is YOUR responsibility. 5. This last one is a puzzler. To “prepare” for persecution we are to: attach to the kingdom, think of yourself as an exile, etc. In other words…. Love Jesus more than you love the things of this world……Hmmm… Then persecution doesn’t “work” those things in us it just “comes” because we are in in the world. Since we already prepared for it by instilling those things in us. 6. Please stop trying to guess if we repented “properly”. That’s between us and the Father. Your second guessing isn’t needed. I don’t see the Father standing over a repentant soul with a hickory stick in his hand parsing out every word. 7. Let’s refocus our eyes on Jesus, hold the things of this world in a very loose grip whether you have much or little and go forth into battle knowing we are led by our loving Heavenly Father into the battle that will bring glory to His Name.

I agree with you, this article does not edify the Church, it beats it down. He is basically saying that all our prayers, our fasting, our repentance, were not good enough. So now, even tough we are still in the middle of the battle, we should just give up and prepare for judgment, because it’s coming our way and there’s nothing we can do about it.
I don’t believe this word came from The Holy Spirit (because it doesn’t agree with Scripture), and I don’t accept it.

I agree with Daniel’s take on his views. It is true that the freedom and abundance enjoyed by the west appears to create lukewarm Christians. However, this is only due to the heavy left-wing media, education system, politically correct groups, democratic left agenda to overshadow the majority who are conservative and law abiding citizens.

We should not measure our faith based on the amount of persecution and tough times because it will become bragging rights as some would claim the number of years spend in prison for Christ. Only Jesus knows each person and will allow each child so much to bear for their trials and rewards.

We should instead be thankful of the abundance in USA because of what the forefathers sacrifice in covenant relationship with the Almighty God. That blessing by God enable USA to prosper and be the bread basket for the world and the Gospel. Without USA, the world would be a lot worse.

President Trump will be re-elected come Jan 20 2021 and the corruption stops. The church will experience a rich harvesting of souls when the Gospel truth is no longer suppressed by the left-wing education system and turn Pro God, Pro life and Pro Bible.

I agree with most, but am not discouraged as you are. If you wish to look at this country as one that is lukewarm, I disagree. We have generations of strong believers who cannot be touched by the temptations of Satan. We are gathered here because this is the country united in a belief that God is the one who guides us. Nowhere on earth is it like in the US. I have seen former communist countries. I see people who are rapidly bringing people to God. But that is because they have been through “Hell on earth”. Here in the US, it is different. We were created through people who risked all in order to establish a country that based on God’s laws and freedoms. Not to be ruled by any human. This country was born from prayers. It is because of the blessings of God that we live here. It is because of God’s will that we exist and will continue to be blessed here on God’s earth.
Yes, it is a good article, full of truth. We need to embrace and rely solely on God during these times. We got through the revolutionary war, stopped slavery, fought and won both world wars. Brought evil to justice, freed the world from tyrants and killers. God has us here at this time for a greater reason than we can imagine. I trust that God is still the same God as he was when the Mayflower landed on Plymouth Rock.
GOD BLESS AMERICA. IN GOD WE TRUST.

“..the Church is declining the most in free countries and it’s growing the most in countries where Christians are persecuted to the point of death.”
Why would then The Bible tell us to pray for good government? Wouldn’t a corrupt and evil government be more beneficial for the advancement of God’s Kingdom? Not according to The Word of God:
“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all man, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Tim. 2:1-4.
We are in the most intense part of the battle for our Nation, I do not believe this is the time to accept defeat, but instead the time to listen and hold tight to The Word of The Lord, believe His promises, and continue to intercede day and night.
“Then The Lord said, ‘Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find FAITH ON THE EARTH?” Luke 18: 6-8.

Ugh, what a wretched soul I am. I want to please you, LORD. I don’t want to think I am consumed by the things of this world, but I fall into it again and again. Teach me morning by morning with new mercies to see. Keep me close and hedge me in from wandering. I want to live my life according to the culture of your kingdom — not of this world. Help me to live holy when all things are going well. You have this against me, I am not willing to suffer. Abba, have mercy. I long for the nearness You brought me in seasons of sorrow where nothing else mattered but you. Your presence during those times was so precious. Teach me to do your will and to guard my mind and thoughts during all seasons. Hold me close. May the things of this earth grow strangely dim in the light of your glory and grace. I choose you as my first love. I cast down my idols right now. Forgive me. Remind me, and continue to draw me and my family near to you no matter what it takes. You are worthy of all honor and glory. Let me live like it. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Praying
December 27, 2020

Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
Acts 3:19

Father God,
You tell us in Your Word that it is only when there is true repentance, is there any hope of refreshing and restoration.
When we fail to recognize our own personal sinfulness, You are deeply offended, and Your Son’s death on the cross is trivialized.
By the power of and under the conviction of Your Holy Spirit, let us look to Your Word for what we are personally doing that offends You. That we will repent of it and seek Your forgiveness. That the sin(s) has been not only renounced, but forsaken.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9

Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,
Matthew 3:8 NKJV

Father God, We pray that we will know in our hearts that the fruit of repentance is the complete forsaking of the sin, or anything that could be associated with the sin. That genuine repentance will produce the kind of character change to be more like Jesus, that results in a difference in the way we live. We acknowledge our desperate need for You:

My soul finds rest in You alone; my salvation comes from You. You alone are my rock and my salvation; You are my fortress, I will never be shaken…Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; You are my mighty rock, my refuge. I will trust in You at all times.
O people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.”
Psalm 62: 1-2, 5-8
