As the 2024 Democratic National Convention meets this week, it’s a good time to remind ourselves that we must pray for all people in government, whether we agree with their political platforms or not. However, sometimes it can be difficult to know what to pray in these situations.

If you’re not sure how to pray for the DNC, its delegates, and its leaders, here are five simple prayer directives that may help you intercede biblically today.

1. Pray that God would control every outcome of the DNC, such that every American may lead a quiet and peaceable life, in all godliness and reverence.

After all, this is the exact reason why God commissioned us to pray for our government and leaders in the first place. As it says in 1 Timothy 2:1-4:

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:1-4 NKJV).

Whether we agree with the DNC’s stance on anything or not, we can and should still pray and give thanks for them. We must petition the Lord to move in power among that group of leaders, so we may lead a quiet and peaceable life filled with godliness and reverence.

If we will pray that, He can move and bring even those who do not know Him yet into godliness and reverence toward Him! In other words, He will move to save the heathen, bringing them to the knowledge of the truth!

While you’re praying this, it’s a good thing to also pray and ask that Holy Spirit would reveal Jesus to every member of the DNC. Pray that every one of them would see visions of Jesus the Man in white, high and lifted up, and that they would bow the knee to Him and make Him their Lord and Savior.

2. Pray that God would elevate righteousness and cast down lawlessness.

We get this prayer from Hebrews 1:8-9, which says:

But to the Son He says: ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions’ (Hebrews 1:8-9 NKJV).

“Lawlessness” means operating outside the bounds of where you’re supposed to be. In an eternal context, lawlessness equals sin: anything that is not exactly like the character of Jesus Christ. In a governmental context, you could also understand it to mean anything that is outside the boundaries of the law, and even outside the boundaries of the Constitution.

This prayer is great for every situation, from your house to the White House. When you pray for righteousness and against lawlessness, God will take that prayer and apply it everywhere He wills.

3. Pray that every person at the DNC would have the wisdom from above—and that they would use it for the cause of righteousness.

The Bible is full of stories about how people set out to harm God’s people, but God suddenly changed their hearts—or, they suddenly found themselves helping the righteous even involuntarily. Although the purpose of the DNC may not be to establish biblical mores and righteous laws in the land, when God gives people wisdom from above, they find themselves making godly decisions even if they didn’t mean to do so.

A description of the “wisdom from above” is found in James chapter 3, which says:

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.

But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace (James 3:13-18 NKJV, emphasis mine).

When people operate in the wisdom from above, they find themselves making decisions that are pure, “peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, [and] without partiality and without hypocrisy.” Wouldn’t you agree that we need some of that in America?

The wisdom from above would impact everything the DNC may discuss this week—from the economy, to the rights of the unborn, to our alliance with Israel, to the Supreme Court, and every other aspect of government!

Let’s pray that God would supernaturally DRENCH every person at the DNC with the wisdom from above, whether they ever wanted that wisdom or not!

4. Pray that God would both elevate leaders and cast them down wherever He wills.

According to Psalm 75, God is the One who establishes leaders AND brings them down:

For exaltation comes neither from the east nor from the west nor from the south. But God is the Judge: He puts down one, and exalts another (Psalm 75:6-7 NKJV).

You might ask, “If God can establish godly leaders anytime He chooses, why then does He allow or establish unrighteous leaders in a nation?”

Well, if we look at the biblical record, we see that He sometimes allowed unrighteous leaders to be established in order to bring the rod of discipline and correction to His people. When His people weren’t faithful to Him, sometimes they wouldn’t listen to anything other than the heavy scourge of sitting under an evil king, whether domestic or foreign.

However, even in the case of unrighteous leadership, God never abandons His people. And if we His people, who are called by His name, will humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways, then He will hear from Heaven, forgive our sins, and heal our land. This means He will raise up kings and bring them down for His purposes and for His glory. Let’s ask Him to do that however He wills right now, shall we?

5. Ask God to reveal the hidden things.

There’s no earthly way for us to know all that is happening behind closed doors in our government. However, one could hazard a guess that there may well be things that need to be brought to light and into public knowledge.

Therefore, I believe we should pray for the hidden things to be revealed in America every single day—both when the DNC is meeting and every other day. We need God to expose and reveal all things, that all men might come to the knowledge of the truth.

But, if we pray, God will do just that. Luke 8:17 says:

For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light (Luke 8:17 NKJV).

So, let’s pray and ask the Lord to reveal secrets and bring hidden things to light today. We don’t know how He will apply that; we don’t know what we don’t know. But He knows all things, and He will certainly hear and answer. Keep your eyes peeled for new things to be revealed in the coming days as He does just that!

Beloved, remember that it is our sacred duty to pray for everyone in government—even for progressives, and for those who hate us, and for those with whom we disagree. But we don’t pray out of our fleshly agendas; we pray for God’s Kingdom to come, and His will to be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
