DeSantis Calls for Ban on Cousin Marriage
Signaling a renewed push to address family structure within the state, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proposed banning first-cousin marriages citing this act as non-consistent with American culture.
“Florida doesn’t ban cousin marriage: That’s a hanging curveball for us to do; we need to do that,” said Governor Ron DeSantis in Tampa on Monday.
He added, “Other states have done it. I don’t know why we wouldn’t, but obviously that feeds into some of the stealth jihad that we see, when you’re allowing things like that. It’s things that are coming in from other cultures that are not consistent with the United States culture, and certainly our culture here in Florida.”
The issue touches on more than just legal technicalities—it speaks to deeper questions about moral order, family integrity, and cultural boundaries.
Florida already prohibits marriages between close family members like siblings, parents, grandparents, nieces, and nephews, but it still hasn’t banned first-cousin marriages—even though most other states already do.
Scripture consistently upholds the importance of healthy, God-honoring family structures, where relationships are clearly defined and protected from confusion or exploitation. When those lines blur, the consequences can ripple across generations.
Supporters of such a ban point to both biological and social concerns. The potential for genetic disorders in children born from close-relative unions is well documented, but just as important is the preservation of clear, safe family roles.
God designed the family to be a place of protection and nurture, not complexity and risk.
This debate is spiritual as well as political. The health of the family is directly tied to the spiritual health of a nation, and decisions made at the state level can have far-reaching consequences. Let’s pray for this ban to become law!
