The Intercessor’s Joy: You Need a Covenant Prayer Partner
The Intercessor’s Joy: You Need a Covenant Prayer Partner
One of the greatest joys an intercessor can have is that of praying with a covenant prayer partner. I’m not talking about simply praying in the same room with people from your church; I’m talking about finding a true friend who prays — and who prays with you, out of love for Jesus and for you. Do you have such a friend? If not, I pray that today you will be inspired to find one.
Do you want state prayer alerts?
First, rest assured that the covenant prayer partner the Father has for you desires that relationship with you as much as you desire that relationship with them.
They may not know who you are, and you may not know who they are (yet). But every person longs for friendship. Every human being was created for relationship. We are not supposed to be islands unto ourselves, but rather we were created for community.
I have been in ministry for many years, and I can tell you that one of the biggest, most frequent prayer requests I receive is from people who tell me that they have no friends.
Over and over, from both men and women, I have had lonely people share this cry of their heart. They long for even one friend with whom they can share life. Well, beloved, if that’s you, I want to tell you today that God has such a person for you. He will give you the desire of your heart, according to the word of God:
Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:3–4 NKJV).
If the desire of your heart is a covenant friend who is also a covenant prayer partner, God will give it to you.
You may have to seek that person out. In fact, you probably WILL have to seek them out. You may have to invite 37 people to lunch, doing everything you can to get to know them and their heart, before you can find the ONE person who shares a kingdom heart with you.
(Although, more likely, if you invite 37 people to have lunch with you and you make every effort to get to know them during that lunch — asking about them, and not doing all the talking yourself — then you will probably make 30 new friends, not just one new friend.)
BIG disclaimer: I recommend that women pursue this sort of covenant friendship with other women, and men pursue this covenant friendship with other men, for this purpose.
But, beloved, if you trust in the Lord and DO GOOD — meaning that you have to DO something about the desire of your heart — then the Lord will send you the covenant friend and prayer partner for whom you are praying.
And once you know who your covenant prayer partner is, there are few joys in life greater than entering the manifest presence of God with that person in prayer.
Once you find your friend, meet with them often. Share your heart with them and let them share theirs with you. Ask them questions about themselves, and answer the questions they ask about you. (And they should ask questions about you; someone who talks only about himself or herself but never asks you any questions is not a true friend.)
And then pray.
When you pray together with your covenant prayer partner, you will see answers. Your burdens and your friend’s burdens will roll away as you pray. Your friendship will grow deeper, and together you will see the Lord do great and mighty things in your lives.
Remember what Jesus promised us:
“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:19–20 NKJV).
And as you walk through life together, enjoying the benefits of covenant friendship and the prayer of agreement, you will find that two are better than one in every way. As the Scripture says:
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken (Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 NKJV).
Friend, one can put a thousand to flight — but two can put 10,000 to flight. Do you have a covenant prayer partner? If not, start seeking your kingdom person today. Pray with everybody you can while you are seeking; get to know people and make proactive efforts to make new friends. Somewhere in the melee of people around you is a covenant friend for you, just waiting to be discovered.
Do you have a covenant prayer partner? If not, will you begin seeking one today? God will give you the desire of your heart! Leave a comment below if you commit to seek a prayer partner today with whom you can share close friendship and the prayer of agreement.

I believe God has already given me a covenant prayer partner. I thank God for how HE orchestrated it. He gave me one even before I realized I needed one! This article confirmed to me the importance, the value of a covenant prayer partner. I would like to have one or two more, or even three! Thank you, Jamie, for this article.
Lord, again I ask for a covenant prayer partner. You have blessed me in the past with several long term prayer partners therefore I am aware of what You do in and through this spiritual relationship. Many answered prayers, power in unity of agreement, seeing the glory manifest and hearing clearly what is on Your heart my Lord.
So I am asking You to guide me and direct my steps.
I give You, Jesus, all honor and praise. I am so grateful for You making it possible for me to have a loving relationship with my Heavenly Father and with Holy Spirit.
Been seeking a TRUE spiritual friend to partner with for 40 yrs. My calling seems to be something that most do not understand. I did find one for a couple of yrs and then she got a little bit eastern religion on me. I had to back away. I long to find someone of like mind and heart. I would love to be an intercessor with true intercessors as a group. They are unfortunately hard to find 😞 I have been reaching out at my church of 2 yrs and it seems that the younger generation is arising to the call as the older generation has not picked up the call. I have 40 + yrs on the ones answering the call. I try to encourage them as much as I can. The call of an intercessor can be a lonely road at times but He has taught me that HE is my friend. When no one else wants to pray, HE does. Even when I don’t He keeps nudging me forward and picking me up when I fall or fail , or want to give up. I will continue always to seek a spiritual friend but if He never brings them I will still answer the call…BECAUSE HE IS FAITHFUL.
Yes, in Jesus’ Name I ask for a covenant prayer partner, whose burdens I can share and who will also bring mine to the Lord. A partner who I can rejoice with as we see the Lord act in our lives and the lives of those around us,
Wednesday I started praying for a prayer partner and friend and here it is Sunday and the Lord confirms that He has heard me and will give me the desires of my heart. It looks impossible but He is the God of the impossible. Thank you much, Ann

I’ve had a mentor who has prayed for me and taught me many things, but I’ve yet to have a prayer partner. Lord bring me someone who can lift me up in my time of need and someone I can lift up in theirs. I thank you Jesus for this opportunity to be in unity for you. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

Looking for a covenant prayer partner
I am blessed to have a covenant prayer partner. We have been meeting to pray for the past 5 yrs. We share with each other our ups and downs and pray for one another. Thank you Jesus for her.
I would love a prayer partner. What a wonderful thing to have. When 2 or more come together. I have so much to learn about the Bible. This would be a great way.
I am blessed to have such a friend. I praise the Lord.
I have asked God for and sought such a friend for most of my functional life. I’m not able to reach out very far;
but, when I do reach somebody, it’s barely a surface touch. I can’t seem to make a preliminary connection with anyone, much less a lasting one. I don’t know what God has in mind for me;
all I know is that He does have a plan for me and that I’m part of His greater plan.
I commit today to seeking a prayer partner with whom I can share a close friendship and the prayer of agreement with.
Thank you for posting the link to this article in the email you sent me to day, Jamie. I LOVE everything you write! Prayers and articles, etc. God bless you!
I say AMEN to what you said: … someone who talks only about himself or herself but never asks you any questions is not a true friend. This is a good pointer to give SINGLE women who are looking to have a boyfriend/husband, not just women/men looking to have covenant prayer partners.
On the other hand, a person who asks questions about you, and wants to hear you talk about yourself, could also be someone who is so GUARDED, and does NOT want you to probe into their personal lives!!! – for the time being at least. I know, because I am one of those. But once I feel safe with someone, I am an open book! No holds barred! Yes, I do want a covenant prayer partner who is ALL about Jesus and everything He loves! And I will follow your advice, Jamie. I will get to work and be in pursuit of such a one, while looking unto the Spirit to lead and guide me.
Strength in numbers through prayer in Jesus’s mighty name!!
Prayer is below.
Comments: I like how you said someone who does not ask questions about you is not a true friend. I definitely have at least one “friend” like this…I think I need to consider that those people, however much they may think they are my peers, are actually “ministering opportunities.” Where the one who can focus on another (without getting resentful) is the “minister.” I’d add, and a friend should make the conversation (not just questions) be roughly half about you (even if you take turns and sometimes in a crisis you mostly share about your issues for a conversation). There are a lot of people who, once I do the right thing and ask questions about them, NEVER turn the tables and show interest in me. It happens more often than not. I think this might be because so few people will show genuine interest in others that the recipient basks in it and never reciprocates. Or if they do, it’s just a quick question or comment, something that scratches the surface. This is fine in a ministry setting but not in the type of friendship described in the article.
Prayer:
Lord, genuine friends are hard to find in our fast paced and individualistic culture. Please give us wisdom and courage to know how to go about pursuing healthy, peer to peer friendships in which we seek you together. Give me wisdom and selflessness when I’m in a setting where the other person is happy to talk about themselves the whole time, and every time. Give me wisdom to know how to see those relationships and your grace to minister to those people instead of expecting them to meet my needs.
But I also ask that you would bring me more peer to peer friends, who are willing to pray together, who will ask about me, who will rejoice with me in the victories that you give me, and for whom I can do the same.
Thank you for the friendships I already have, and give me wisdom as I continue to develop new ones.
And I also pray for everyone who reads this article and feels touched. I pray for those who don’t have a good friend that they can share this type of friendship with. I pray that you would bring someone their way. I pray that it would *not* take a really long time, and 37 lunches out – that would just be discouraging. Open up their eyes, and open up the eyes of the person who is to be their special friend. And may you be lifted up and glorified by these relationships. Amen.
As a symphonic violinist, I have often reflected on how necessary it has been in my 40 plus year career to join with other musicians in small chamber groups: duets, trios, and especially string quartets! Practicing alone in one’s room is not enough! Likewise, praying in one’s room, as necessary for success as solitary practice is for the violinist, does not seem to be quite enough for many of us.
We are drawn to combine our solitary voice with the voices of others, both as musicians, and as a disciples of Jesus in prayer.
I want to thank you for this prayer and article. It is something I needed. I am now looking forward to a covenant partner.
Lord, I have been seeking a covenant prayer partner to share with for many years but have not found one I am confident in sharing with. I pray you will bring that person into my life that I can open my heart with and provide a hearing heart in return, Amen.
“Help us to pray the prayer of agreement together…”
Is there a particular verse or prayer of agreement that we would use?
Thank you.
He or she just means pray in agreement with the godly requests, not that there is a particular word for word prayer to use.
Thank you father for the covenant prayer partner you have in mind for me..
