I Prayed have prayed
Lord, we pray against this disastrous red-green alliance. We ask You to stop those who would harm our nation from gaining power and influence.

You’ve likely heard the phrase “Red-Green Alliance.” But who is the red, who is the green, and why does their partnership matter for America just days before the midterm elections?

On Thursday’s Pray with America’s Leaders, IFA Chief Program Officer Kris Kubal sat down with Dr. David Wurmser, senior analyst for Middle East affairs at the Center for Security Policy. Wurmser served as a senior advisor in the George W. Bush administration, first at the State Department and then at the White House, and returned for two years during President Trump’s first term. He is also a former Navy Reserve lieutenant commander in intelligence.

Red, Green, and Black

Wurmser opened by defining the terms. “The red is communism, the flag of socialism, communism. The green is the flag of Islam, and the brown is the flag of fascism,” he said, adding that black is another common way to describe the fascist strand.

These movements differ on the utopia they want to build, he explained, but they share a first objective: “It’s to destroy Western civilization.” Each is also revolutionary at home, seeking to overturn the family, religion, and institutions that stand in the way.

Wurmser traced the cooperation back more than a century. He pointed to German intelligence sending Lenin by sealed train into Russia in 1917 to knock Russia out of World War I. He said the Nazis later cultivated Arab nationalist and Islamist forces in the Middle East to undermine Britain, France, and the United States, and that after Germany’s defeat, those networks were absorbed by the KGB.

He cited a jailed Iranian Revolutionary Guard figure who told British television in the early 1980s that Iran’s revolutionaries waited for PLO representatives before organizing anything, calling them “the professionals.” Wurmser said the PLO’s coordination with Shiite and Western movements ran through George Habash’s Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), whose red flag, he noted, still appears at campus protests today.

What Each Side Brings

The key, Wurmser argued, is that the two sides bring different strengths. After a century and a half of practice, the communist side offers methods of subversion, coded communication, destabilization, and the slow takeover of institutions. “What they bring to the table is not just numbers,” he said. “They bring for the Islamist movements the structure that the Islamists themselves would never have been able to set up on their own.”

Islamists also need the left to attack Western foundations from within. Wurmser described the West as built on three pillars: Jerusalem, Rome, and Athens. A Muslim attacking Christianity from outside would face backlash, he said, so the red side penetrates churches and synagogues instead. He added that leftist “post-colonial” arguments now wall off Islam from criticism, leaving ordinary parents at school board meetings unsure what hit them when they raise concerns.

In return, the green side supplies what the left lacks: a cause, energy, and numbers. “You can organize riots, you can organize a threat to the government,” Wurmser said, “but you’re going to need numbers to really overthrow it.”

The Path to Pharaoh

Wurmser said the strategy runs through chaos. He cited Dostoevsky’s novel Demons, in which a Lenin-like revolutionary plots enough bloodshed to destroy the laws, followed by a desert of chaos until the people cry out for a Pharaoh. “He’s reversing Exodus,” Wurmser said.

He contrasted the Tower of Babel, where “man became bricks in an edifice to replace God,” with Joshua’s altar of uncut stones, where “you use what God gives you to build an altar to God.”

He also warned that the left is underestimating its partner. Islamists view the secular left as offering emptiness, he said, and “something will always beat nothing.” He pointed to Iran, where communists and Khomeini’s Islamists together overthrew the Shah, before Khomeini turned on his leftist allies and executed many of them.

What to Watch on Election Day

Looking to Tuesday’s elections, Wurmser pointed to Israel’s October 27 vote, where he said Muslim Brotherhood money flowed in to drive turnout through cash and gas cards. Israeli police did arrest three Negev residents on suspicion of vote-buying for Mansour Abbas’s Ra’am party, though election officials described it as a localized incident and Ra’am has denied ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Wurmser also said Israeli authorities had found men voting under women’s veils using other people’s identification.

He urged Americans to see local power shifts in places like Dearborn, Minnesota’s Somali communities, and Texas as part of a broader strategy. “If jihad is thought of as war, electoral elements of it are considered bridgeheads,” he said. He pointed to candidates such as Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who has campaigned alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as examples of red and green fused in one campaign.

Wurmser was careful not to prejudge the outcome. “I don’t want to, you know, say the elections are fraud before it even happens,” he said. “But I think if I were law enforcement, I would watch this with a hawk eye.”

Let’s Pray

Let’s pray that every attempt to buy, steal, or manipulate votes on Tuesday would be exposed and stopped, and that election officials and law enforcement would act with vigilance and integrity. Let’s pray for churches that have been infiltrated by ideologies hostile to Christ, that they would repent and return to the truth of Scripture. Let’s pray for the courage of parents and citizens who speak up, that they would not be shamed into silence. Above all, let’s pray that America would not trade its God-given freedom for a false order, and that in the face of empty ideologies, the Church would offer the “something” that truly satisfies: Jesus Christ. And let’s pray for Dr. Wurmser, as he asked, that he would never go astray and would have health and strength to continue the fight.
