Who Are the Democratic Socialists of America?
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has positioned itself as a champion of working-class Americans and an alternative to the Democratic Party establishment. However, membership surveys and recent polling suggest that the socialist organization may have more in common with the Democratic establishment than its leaders would like to admit.
Let the IFA community know how to pray for you.
Despite its emphasis on representing minorities and working-class voters, the DSA’s membership is disproportionately white, college-educated, and secular. Its political priorities also appear to diverge from those of many American voters, particularly on immigration.
From The National Pulse:
According to a 2025 membership survey, 66 percent of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) members are white. The same survey found that Women and so-called “non-binary” people account for 54 percent of the membership.
The DSA’s official 2021 membership survey shows that 32 percent of members identify as “LGBTQIA+,” 80 percent of members hold a bachelor’s degree, and 60 percent identify as irreligious. It also found that 57 percent of DSA members live in urban areas and that 96 percent of members live in an area with a DSA chapter. The average member is approximately 33 years old, significantly younger than the average DSA member before 2016.
DSA membership data from 2021 also indicates that 56 percent work in white collar professional or managerial occupations and that 28 percent earn more than $100,000 a year.
The organization’s policy priorities are equally revealing. According to the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s 2026 National Public Opinion Poll, 96% of Democrats who strongly identify with the DSA support raising taxes on the wealthy. Meanwhile, 91% support granting citizenship to illegal immigrants, and 85% support defunding the police.
Perhaps most strikingly, 62% of strongly DSA-aligned Democrats support allowing noncitizens to vote, compared to just 29% of Democrats who do not identify with the organization.
These positions could present challenges for Democrats hoping to appeal to moderate and independent voters. According to polling conducted by the Democrat-aligned research firm Blueprint following the 2024 presidential election, 77% of swing voters believed Democrats had been insufficiently tough on illegal immigration. Additionally, 73% believed Democrats prioritized immigrants over American citizens.
The findings raise questions about the DSA’s growing influence within the Democratic Party. Although the organization presents itself as a grassroots alternative to establishment politics, its membership demographics closely resemble the educated, urban voters who have increasingly supported Democrats.
Its positions on immigration and other contentious issues also risk alienating voters who rejected former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024. As democratic socialists seek greater influence over the party’s direction, these ideological divisions could become increasingly consequential ahead of the midterm elections.
As Americans prepare to vote, let’s pray for discernment among voters, wisdom for our elected leaders, and policies that uphold justice, protect our nation’s sovereignty, and serve the American people. Above all else, let’s pray that the American people would wholeheartedly reject Marxism in all its forms!
