I Prayed have prayed
Lord, raise up a million more intercessors. Let this be the hour that the intercessors arise!
Reading Time: 4 minutes

I read many of the comments on the articles I write for IFA. I may not be able to respond to every comment, but I do take time to read them. I’m moved by the heartfelt prayers and insight in those comments. Recently, one in particular stood out. A woman began by saying: “I don’t know if I am an intercessor, but … “

This content is supported by your donations. Give today.

It happens that I’d been working on material for a podcast about intercession when I read that question. And maybe you, like this woman, have wondered to yourself: “Am I an intercessor?” Or maybe you are curious and want to know what intercession is all about. Well, it is a deep desire of mine to be able to clarify some of this for you.

What’s the difference between intercession and prayer?

First, let’s understand that both are important. Prayer is usually about making a request for yourself or for your loved ones. Intercession means to intercede — that is, for one to intervene (to mediate, to plead, to negotiate) on behalf of another. When we intercede, we stand in between God and another person or a group of persons. Intercession transcends self. It places God’s agenda above our own.

Is everyone called to intercede? Yes. According to 1 Timothy 2:1–2, we are to offer prayers and intercession on behalf of other human beings. Though this epistle is addressed to Timothy, it was written for the Church on the whole, and so we know that this exhortation applies to all of us as well.

How do I know if I am an intercessor?

Here are a few signs which may indicate that you are called to the ministry of intercession:

  • You love the place of prayer, and you love to pray for others. You delight in prayer, such that for you it’s not an obligation, and it’s not boring. For you, prayer is more than a list of needs or requests, it is a lifestyle.
  • You probably get bored with prayer lists. You may start out with a list of prayers, but very soon you venture off and start praying in a different manner. Intercessors like to be led by Holy Spirit in prayer — and He doesn’t do things according to a checklist.
  • People often come to you with prayer needs, because they’ve realized that when you pray, they see answers come quickly.
  • You feel that God has given you a specific assignment to pray through something. Some people have an assignment to pray until abortion is ended; others to see an end to human trafficking; and still others to see justice done, or for some awakening or breakthrough for a specific person, church, city, or nation/nations.
  • You recognize when God is giving you a burden to pray. A burden is a strong urge or a leading in a certain direction. This can happen at any time of the day or night, and you can recognize that God is calling you to pray at that very moment.
  • You like to pray God’s promises back to Him. This is biblical. Intercessors remind God of His promises (see Exodus 32:13–14 and Isaiah 62:6–7).
  • There are times you are given a revelation during prayer. God will give you strategies or insight into a situation of which you have no personal knowledge.
  • You sometimes have a knowing in your spirit when something is off; this is actually a gift of discerning, and in this context, discerning is always given for purposes of intercession.
  • There are times you are moved to compassion and tears during prayer. This is normal for an intercessor. When you intercede, God reveals His heart in a given situation. You may at times feel grief or a deep hurt when praying for someone or over something (see Jeremiah 31:15–16).
  • There are times you feel you have no words during a prayer. At such times, tears or groans are all you can manage. This is called travail, and it is biblical. It may also be referred to as “birthing prayer,” and it plays a part in birthing God’s plans (see Romans 8:26).
  • You believe wholeheartedly that prayer can bring the transformation we need.

If you recognize some or all of these signs, perhaps there is a call on your life to intercession. Ezekiel 22:30 says that God is looking for those who will stand in the gap. It is God who issues the call. Our response is to be obedient and say yes. Our second response is to just be available when He is prompting us to prayer.

This article will be confirmation to those who already know they’re intercessors. But for those who have wondered if they are, or who desire a deeper understanding, my prayer is that this will produce a hunger to go deeper in relationship with God. The times in which we live will increasingly require that.

Since the start of 2020, I have heard the word unprecedented expressed more times than I can count. I have to say that I believe it to be true: Just about everything around us now is unprecedented in quality or quantity. Who would have imagined that we would ever see what we have begun to see? We are in a crucial hour. We need intercessors NOW who will stand in the gap for their families, cities, churches, and nations — as never before. My prayer is: Lord, raise up a million more intercessors to stand and take the place to which You have called them. Let this be the hour that the intercessors arise!

Share with us if you are sensing this call, or tell us about how God called you to intercession.

I am a very apparent intercessor. I do pray for myself and my family. But I generally only pray one time as not to harass the Father , the son or the Holy Ghost. I pray for ppl. I pray for our nation to change away from the lies it has written into it. I pray just for the sake of prayer. Because I used to get high on the street now I get high while I pray. It’s a bit funny, cuz Whose sense of humor is better than theirs. I have had visions. Even helped some ppl with tidings of coming blessings. I plan to stay the course, regardless of the negativity of others.

When I was baptized with the Holy Ghost the man that baptized me said God wants to make you an intercessor do you accept I said yes that night the Holy Spirit came into me and I prayed many different tongues. My children myself my family and husband have all been constantly attacked. There seems to always be monitoring spirits and Jezebel spirits trying to attack my life. It is hard I don’t have a church but often feel led to go to churches and pray for the people there. I have prayed for people and things seem to come to pass as the lord tells me to tell them. I often think these people are gonna think I’m crazy but they don’t and I realize that’s God that the enemy was trying to stop me. Some people say they don’t need intercessions. But one night I was praying for a body of people and I swore as I prayed I saw a spirit moving upon the people pouring a gold substance down their throats. As I looked up a prophet stood before me and he said when you pray the Holy Spirit moves upon the people you are praying for since then I know my gift is important no matter what anyone says. Maybe it’s just not understood. But my life remains in turmoil. Still God is worth it because he first loved me.

Move our hearts Oh Lord to follow your calling, and intercede for our brothers and sisters in need, for your church, our governments for all people in authority, and for the Intercessors for America Ministry. May our response on intercession bring the fulfillment of your promises for the needs we pray every day here at Intercessors for America. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

I retired from full time ordained ministry in 2020. I have always been a prayer warrior, but since retirement, I have become even a greater intercessor.
I started reading IFA and Dutch Sheets Give Him 15 at retirement. Both posts have transformed my prayer life. I now intercede for America daily.
Also, God led me to a new church, where I am now Pastor of Prayer. I post a daily prayer on our Messenger page.
I am so thankful for this new calling in my life. I have new purpose and meaning. And I thank God He is still using me in retirement.
And I thank God for IFA that daily encourages me to pray!

I see Amy Price comment restored now and that is who the encouragement is for in my previous comment (or anyone else that needs it). God wants us to be encouraged.

My apologies but I accidentally hit report comment instead of reply. Then her comment disappeared.
What I wanted to say to (sorry that I can’t remember her name) was here is an encouraging word that I truly believe is from God. “Do not look upon the number of people. Whether there is one or two or more, my power is not in numbers. Because when you enter into the throne room of prayer and intercession, look to the heavens with your spiritual eyes. You will see the armies of Almighty God, poised and waiting – ready to intervene because you have been faithful in intercession.”
My hope is that encourages you.

My call to intercession for America was very clear and direct. It followed a 7 year season of reading the Bible through, followed by a 26 week season of praying for a revival of my local dying church, praying the Word of God over our fellowship. For 26 consecutive weeks, no one joined in regularly. For the first 3 weeks, 2 others joined in, one my mother, the other a close friend. The pastor came once or twice, but quickly fell away. Then came persecution. Finally, on week 26, I laid down my prayer agenda and surrounded to His agenda. His voice came clearly and quickly, “Pray for America”. To this date, as far as I know, no one in my area or in my family, local church or fellow believers has been burdened in this way. But even every time I’m ready to give up, He shows up with a new sign or encouragement. To Him be the glory

Bless you. I know the situation and feeling with few showing up to pray. However, “having done all…..stand….” Thank you for taking your place on the wall. You are a watchman. May God continue to let you hear his voice clearly and give you strength and energy for the battle. Blessings. You are loved.

Wow, Amy Price,I moved to a small town and am attending a church that I felt by the Holy Spirit needed an prayer. It’s a nice congregation. I love my church. God spoke to me to pray, “tear down the walls of religion” 2 years later a small group of us are going every Wednesday to the middle of the city to pray for our city, nation and whatever the Holy Spirit lays upon our hearts. I prayed so many Jericho marches around my church. And now, “to God be the glory” we are praying at schools and our city.

I am an intercessor who wants justice done in America and the world as well as obe called to have the burden of Moses and the manrle of Elijah. My way of intercession is to pray for my list of people but to get them to change their wicked ways and come to the Lord in a deeper more meaningdul way. I interceed for world leaders, state and local leaders, dictators, terrorists and others.
But I also senf diasters out to the world to shake things up -to lrad them to repent and to heal their lives for the Lord’s sake. I have always beeb a faring person, but always abused and misunderstood. I want with all my heart to see that all men come into the Kingdom and find peace of mind. Alas I have been alone in battles for 32 years and I feel like giving up a lot of times. You have made me releazie that their are other interceesors out there praying the same way I have for America to come back to its senses. Thank you, I still to be lifted up in prayer and support for my task is going to be heavy from now on because of the Democrats who oppose Trump.

Where is this, it may help me when I get depressed or frustrated. I was adused from day pne of my life and I have bo support from anyone, even my church family has rejected mein many of the things I told them they and my family treats it like a joke. My father never wanted me, my family wants me to leave,my coworkers don’t help me with work. neighnors throw their trash in the street.
What am to do, plus the Lord tolf me that He has enough and is sending judgment on America and the world. He uses mt natural diasters for that reason. I didn’t ask for that. He gave me the mantle of Elijah and the burfen of Moses. It gets overwhelming dealing with all this against me. Thank you for ypur reply it helps.

A really clear cut guide to intercession, spiritual warfare, the Holy Spirit, and an interesting read as well is “Becoming A Prayer Warrior” by Elizabeth Alves. I have used it for a study with women more than once.

Thank you Gloria! Four years ago, Holy Spirit called me into full time intercession and prayer for my family, friends, church, and nation. Since then He’s added more.
I’ve read books on intercession and know that what you have succinctly said here, is very true.
Thank you so much for sharing and I’m in total agreement that at least one million intercessors, hopefully billions, are hearing the call to pray, decree, declare and intercede God’s Word before His wonderful Throne of grace and mercy in Jesus Name!
Father, let Your fire fall on our hearts and lives and burn up anything not pleasing to You in Jesus Name!

Also I’m on 34 intercessors groups that are not on FB. Wow! The floodgates are open and it’s thrilling to watch Father God doing what He does best!

AMEN! I have always liked to pray, then one day I realized “through God’s Word” that I was an intercessor. I have actually turned into a cry baby while praying. Am not ashamed either. One day as I was praying I said, “God break my heart for what breaks Yours” Ouch! My prayer life has increased. One of my prayers is that God will tear down the walls of religion! WE are so divided by religion. Religion is usually man’s agenda, not God’s. Tradition is just as ugly! Father, break tradition also. If you do not have a spirit of prayer, ask God to set you free from the spirit of laziness. That is what I did when I found myself becoming lazy. Nehemiah cried when he say the walls of Jerusalem torn down. We too should cry and ask the Holy Spirit to teach us how to rebuild the walls of our nation and church through much fasting and prayer. that is the only way to rebuild walls that the enemy has torn down. Only because the church has not prayed like we should. Now we must repent and confess or sins like Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah and the other Prophets did in order to see God’s hand change things.

Amen. I find myself crying a lot too. It started 5 years ago about the time my daughter was born. I heard the preacher at our revival preach a message “For such a time as this!” out of Esther 4:4 and I could not get that phrase out of my mind. I also felt there was a revival brewing and God was up to something but I did not know what. When I had my daughter in 2015, I started having health issues and I honestly think the Lord wanted to use that to get me to pray. I have never felt a desire to pray like this in my entire life since salvation. I had a strong desire to serve the Lord, but now the burdens came so heavy that I feel I am having a heart attack! I can feel the spiritual warfare and often “pray through” those forces every day. I feel I have no choice in the matter but to charge the throne of God with these burdens being set in my lap. Praise the Lord. He knows what he is doing.

For so long I have been praying for our nation and for righteous leaders who seek God’s wisdom. Also, I ask for justice and accountability. How I pray to see a turning to God. I am asking for the Holy Spirit to be poured out in great measure and that we have a mighty awakening in our land. I pray for the binding of Satan, especially in those who seek to destroy, disrupt and deceive. I mention especially for George Soros to be bound!

Good Morning Father.

Thank you for such a good article. Now, I know I’m an intercessor. Praise God.

Father God, ignite and mobilize all Christians to be intercessors. We need all the intercessors in the whole wide USA to take back our country and to be Your vessels to redirect our country back to You.

Nothing is Impossible with God. Your will be done.

50 out 50 states all will be voting for Your Value, voting for President Trump. Bless the next administration with Republican House and Senate. Let the Republican be more united. Father God, raise up young generations of Christians who will have no corruption in them because they are trustworthy, not corrupt, nor negligent. Who will be the next generation to lead USA to the next level.
More American will grow to love You and love people to work or do their job because they are working for You.

I pray that You dry up all the resources of the Far Left leaning generations, such AOC, Ilhan Omar etc. Inspire them to progress following ground rule, to love God then love others. I pray for the salvation of these Far Left Leaning generations in the government currently that they will receive accept and own Christ Jesus as their savior.

Father God, please take down Antifa, BLM and all such. Dry up all their resources. I pray for their salvation in Christ Jesus for their members.

In Jesus’ Name, we thank You, Father. Amen.
