Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s open Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate after a bitter campaign marked by questions about his alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

El-Sayed’s victory proves the Democratic Party’s new far-left faction can win not only in places like New York and California, but can secure victory in the swing states that decide national elections.

While El-Sayed does not consider himself a socialist, he won the endorsement of the Democratic Socialists of America and ran a campaign that mirrored New York Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s.

Rogers repeatedly voiced that El-Sayed’s potential ties to the Muslim Brotherhood are a national security risk. “So being bought off by the Muslim Brotherhood, having donors to his campaign from Hamas that support Hezbollah, is not a problem?” said Rogers during the second Michigan senatorial debate. “If you are going to go to the United States Senate, we need to know are you for America or are you for these terrorist groups overseas?”

The Daily Wire reports that El-Sayed’s parents immigrated from Egypt, that his father served as a part-time imam, and that his father-in-law was a founding committee member of the Islamic Society of North America, which the federal government has linked closely to the Muslim Brotherhood. Rogers also pressed El-Sayed over a 2012 open letter he signed urging an Egyptian politician from the Brotherhood’s political wing “to purge the media and police.” El-Sayed never addressed the claims directly, instead calling the suggestion that his loyalties lay outside the United States “shameful.”

The race exposed deep fractures among Democrats as well. El-Sayed drew criticism from Republicans and moderate Democrats for campaigning with communist streamer Hasan Piker. Rep. Haley Stevens, who lost the Democratic primary to El-Sayed by about one point, initially endorsed him but later withdrew her support and backed Rogers after El-Sayed refused to condemn an ad she considered antisemitic. That ad was run by a super PAC affiliated with Piker’s uncle, Cenk Uygur.

Rogers ran as a moderate, opening a campaign office in Detroit and courting liberal Jewish and black voters uneasy with El-Sayed’s anti-Israel views and economic agenda. In the campaign’s final days, he also released a pro-choice ad that upset some pro-life activists. In the end, his ground game could not overcome what The Daily Wire called a “blue tsunami.” El-Sayed’s supporters told the outlet they dismissed the Brotherhood allegations and hope he will make Michigan more affordable.

Let’s pray for Senator-elect El-Sayed, that he would honor his oath to the Constitution and serve every Michigander with integrity. Let’s pray that the truth about his associations would come fully into the light, that unsubstantiated accusations would not obscure the facts, and that any real influence of the Muslim Brotherhood or other hostile movements in our government would be exposed and removed. Let’s pray that candidates would stand boldly for life instead of abandoning unborn children for political advantage, and that Michigan’s Muslim communities would encounter the love and truth of Jesus Christ. Above all, let’s pray that America would reject the false promises of socialism and turn back to the God who alone gives true freedom.
