WELFARE REFORM WORKING IN ALABAMA
WELFARE REFORM WORKING IN ALABAMA
Thank God for the state of Alabama encouraging able-bodied people on welfare to work. Pray for God’s truth to inform welfare policies in our states and in the federal government.
For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” (2 Thess. 3:10)
“Thirteen previously exempted Alabama counties saw an 85 percent drop in food stamp participation after work requirements were put in place on Jan. 1, according to the Alabama Department of Human Resources. . . .
Statewide, the number of able-bodied adults receiving food stamps has fallen by almost 35,000 people since Jan. 1, 2016. Each recipient receives about $126 a month in benefits.
Nationwide, there are about 44 million people receiving SNAP benefits at a cost of about $71 billion. The Trump administration has vowed to cut the food stamp rolls over the next decade, including ensuring that able-bodied adults recipients are working.” (Excerpted from AL.com, reporting by Leada Gore.)

John, I think you are misinformed about SNAP beneficiaries—I am an octogenarian receiving a small benefit from SNAP which helps pay for milk and bread, leaving me a bit more of my Soc. Sec. to cover OTC meds which are not covered by insurance. I have never heard that one must be employed in order to receive these benefits, only that one’s income does not exceed that specified by law.
Lord, there are times with sincere Christian miss it, for without your counsel and wisdom to pray, our pray don’t avail as much as it could. Lord, the focus on welfare people and the finances that it takes is small compare to the billions in other area America need to bring change. Help Your people pray accurately. While there may be some who wickedly take advance, there are many more who truly need the help. As all things, there is also exceptions. Lord, don’t let those who truly need it, according to Your Word and standards, not the world standard, receive the help they need, and at the same time, please kindly perfect that which concern us about those who truly wickedly take advantage of the system. You judge rightly, for there is no poor judgment in You. You know the hearts and mind of all people. Thank You that this matter will be resolved by You, for You car, in Jesus name!.
I agree, SNAP benefits are for those who need them. The elderly, unemployed, single mom’s receive benefits….many are not employed. However, I may have misunderstood your statement that they must be employed.
I also agree, the problem is a living wage..but raising wages for less than a GED education to $12-15 dollars per hour for fast food restaurant counter help, or other such work, as some suggest.. while person’s with 2 years of college or a certification career earn $10-14 is not the answer. Raising everybody’s wage comparably as some suggest is not the answer either.
Entry level jobs at fast food are that…entry level. Our teen unemployment problems could be greatly reduced if more of these jobs were reserved for them instead of the many adults who couldn’t get through the current education system and had to drop out. We must change that and raise the problem solving ability of those who struggle through the academics of school so they don’t drop out and raise their lives to their full God given potential instead of limiting their choices to life by pushing them through with meaningless and empty educational challenges which unfortunately help make them a victim. Just like many of our government agencies, our educational system is also broken.
Public education today is more focused on agendas to benefit the system and unfortunately limit the masses to problem solve, or take responsibility for themselves and their own adulthood. This is tragic…just 40 years ago we were at the top with Japan in education and work productivity. Now we are somewhere near 26 with education..and our GNP is declined drastically. Could one issue be the formation of the Department of Education in the early 70’s, some 40 years ago? Just some food for thought to provoke real dialogue.
We pray for Spicer & his continued faithfulness to God in living out his faith. AMEN
