The U.S. unemployment rate hit 14.7% in April, the Labor Department reported Friday, with a staggering 20.5 million job losses that month underscoring the economic disaster wreaked by the coronavirus pandemic.

The report is some of the worst set of jobless numbers on record, surpassing the lows of the Great Recession of the late 2000s and putting the current economic crisis on par with the Great Depression of the 1930s.

The numbers provide a glimpse into the depth of the crisis caused by the government-ordered shutdown of the economy, and likely will heighten calls for Congress to pass another massive spending bill to rescue families, businesses and state government budgets.

The first four rescue packages have spent a total of nearly $3 trillion.

Capitol Hill Democrats had already begun working on a “Roosevelt-style” relief package.

“Today’s report makes it abundantly clear that, as this pandemic continues, more must be done to ensure that our economy is ready to surge back once it is safe to reopen,” said House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, Maryland Democrat.

The job market collapsed at a breathtaking pace as state governments’ orders to shutter businesses and stay at home took a toll with massive layoffs.

The unemployment rate was at a five-decade low of 3.5% in February and ticked up to 4.4% in March before skyrocketing in April.

The economic pain across the country likely exceeds the numbers in the government’s report.

The Labor Department noted that many people who lost jobs in April but didn’t look for another one were not counted in the unemployment rate. Those losses were reflected in the decline in working-age Americans who have jobs, which dropped to a record-low 51.3%.

(Excerpt from The Washington Times. Article by S.A. Miller.)

Although unemployment is expected to grow in May, a turnaround is anticipated in June. For encouragement about these statistics, read this USA Today article, “5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Freak Out about the 20.5M Job Losses.”

Nevertheless, as watchmen on the wall, we have to take note that in a few short months ago, the U.S. had functional full employment and in February had reached a 50-year low. Some economists were concerned that the unemployment rate might be too low. In what feels like the blink of an eye, our unemployment numbers match the Great Depression. Our prayers are so needed for:

  • The unemployed
  • The underemployed
  • The college seniors whose job offers have been revoked
  • Business owners and other employers who have to make hard decisions
  • Economic  leaders and advisers in the Trump Administration, the Fed, Congress

Have you lost your job? Someone you know? Please leave a comment so we can pray for people by name.

As a result of the pandemic, my company was forced to sell the assets and release all employees. As a nurse in a time when MANY are being furloughed, jobs are scarce. I treasure your prayers for all nurses, including myself.

Lord, as each believer is ready to emerge from this Sabbath Rest Sabbatical after radical repentance, empower them to reach the lost in their circle of influence with the gospel, not loving their own lives. Moving from grace to grace.

We all can do something, just helping one person, or one person and their family. When I was young my Grandmother and my Mom too, talked of the depression and how hard it was, there are also a ton of movies that depict it. The pandemic may have started this, but wise leaders need to all work together to move us forward and out of this. I only see President Trump and his Administration working for that end, and a few of the Governors. Prayer and support and the help of all working together with unselfish motives, or non-partisan goals if you will, is a must. God is no respecter of persons, and neither should we be. The truth will set us all free, and those that want to panic and revel in chaos need to go sit in corner or be placed there by the voters. God help us all, and please Lord cause everyone to see and hear and know the Truth.

I am not sure about the text here. Great Depression unemp was 25% for several years. I don’t believe there is a comparison as yet. Especially since some of the numbers are simply hours reductions.

But, depending on the response of the people to states opening, we will see. Already withe the extra $600 being applied flatly instead of prorated properly, there are those attempting to refuse to return to work even though preliminary antibody tests show it is even safer than previously communicated.

Let’s pray for balance and integrity.

I thank you Lord that you are Jehovah Jireh, the Lord our Provider. With much loss comes future gains with you. I pray that you will lift up the heads and stir people to encourage and support one another during this pandemic. I have lost jobs in the past and you were right there to pick me up and carry me forwards. If you did it for me you can do it for others. Your mercies are new every morning. Our future is in your hands, the safest more assured place we need to be now and forever. Amen

Agreed that our prayers are needed for the economy to recover but most important are our prayers for revival. For people to start being good again! There is so much hatred in this land: hatred for the President, hatred for the police. Hatred that causes young men to join gangs and murder each other. Hatred for people of different color, culture, etc. Hatred for people of different religions, and hatred of His own people! GOD can stop the plague in a split second! And I believe that HE will do what is best for all people, but we must co-operate with HIM and search our own hearts and repent and put an end to hatred! HIS command: “Love one another”.
