President Donald Trump is signaling that he intends to play an active role in the future of the nation’s capital, warning that he will not allow Washington, D.C., to reverse what he sees as recent public safety gains. His comments come after Democrat mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George secured her party’s nomination and outlined a platform that has drawn sharp criticism from the president.

President Donald Trump warned that he will “not let” Janeese Lewis George, the Democrat candidate for Washington, DC, mayor, destroy the city with her policies.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared that George “has stated that she wants to empty the prisons,” turn the city into a sanctuary city to protect criminal illegal aliens, and defund the police, among other things. Trump pointed out that “many people,” including him, had “worked long and hard” to clean up the nation’s capital and make sure it is “again a Safe and Prestigious Community.”

“Janeese Lewis George, the Communist who is almost certainly going to be elected Mayor of Washington, D.C., has stated that she wants to empty the prisons, make D.C. a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens back into our beloved Capital, resist Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, and so many other Capital destroying ‘things,’” Trump said.

The exchange highlights growing tensions between the Trump administration and local officials in Washington, D.C. Although the city has its own elected government, Congress retains constitutional authority over the District, and federal law provides the president with certain powers during emergencies. Earlier this year, President Trump invoked provisions of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under temporary federal control while activating the National Guard as part of a broader effort to reduce crime and restore order.

Since then, the administration has emphasized improvements throughout the city, including restoration projects at historic parks, monuments, and public fountains. The clearing of homeless encampments near prominent landmarks such as the Kennedy Center also became a visible part of the administration’s public safety initiative. Supporters have pointed to these efforts as evidence that Washington has become cleaner and safer, while critics have questioned the federal government’s intervention in local affairs.

George has pushed back against many of Trump’s claims, stating that she is willing to work with the administration when it benefits District residents but will oppose actions she believes threaten the city’s autonomy. She has also reiterated her support for D.C. statehood, an issue that remains deeply divisive in Congress. As the general election approaches, debates over crime, immigration enforcement, policing, and local control are expected to remain central issues in the race.
