The term “lawfare” is not made up. The online Collins dictionary defines it as the strategic use of legal proceedings to intimidate or hinder an opponent. In other words: weaponizing our nation’s law to hinder a political opponent who can not be defeated otherwise.

Background

The use of lawfare has spiked with a slew of lawsuits against President Trump. Six high-profile and high-stakes cases are currently running against him. But lawfare does not just target individuals. It is also used to influence the way votes are collected to swing the interpretation of election law in favor of a party’s agenda. In Wisconsin, for example, the State Supreme Court has agreed to take up a case that could overturn a prior ruling prohibiting ballot boxes after liberals flipped the makeup of the Court to the left.

Many of the lawfare cases are brought by liberal prosecutors, and there is a strategy behind that. They have broad discretion in deciding what crimes they will prosecute, and it is not uncommon that those decisions are based on their political leanings.

George Soros has been known to quietly invest millions into overhauling the legal system by financing the election campaigns of DAs in several states who are now engaging in lawfare against conservative politicians and candidates.

There is no doubt that the weaponization of our nation’s laws signals a dangerous slide toward lawlessness and injustice, making it difficult for anyone to have a fair trial. Moreover, it undermines our Constitution and the system of checks and balances in our government designed to prevent corruption and maintain the balance of power.

How To Pray

We must pray into four powerful truths regarding God and government:

1. God restrains lawlessness (see 2 Thessalonians 2:7).
2. God does everything for the glory of His name (see Isaiah 48:11).
3. God controls government for the sake of the gospel (see 1 Timothy 2:1-2).
4. God has ordained to accomplish great things through the prayers of His people (see James 5:16-18).

Standing on those eternal truths, let us pray that God will bring back His hand of restraint, protect our election processes, multiply intercession over our nation’s justice system, and raise up candidates who love and defend truth, integrity, and justice.

Almighty Father, You love justice. For that reason, we love justice, too, and pray that You protect our election processes against manipulation and corruption through lawfare. Raise up and prosper godly candidates for office and frustrate the plans of the wicked to destroy our public’s trust in government. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
