On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration could carry out mass layoffs at the Education Department, potentially marking the beginning of the end of federalized education in America.

The conservative-majority court, without any explanation, granted an emergency application from the administration that blocks the federal judge’s ruling.

The court’s three liberal members objected, with Justice Sonia Sotomayor writing a blistering dissenting opinion.

President Donald Trump praised the court’s decision.

“The United States Supreme Court has handed a Major Victory to Parents and Students across the Country, by declaring the Trump Administration may proceed on returning the functions of the Department of Education BACK TO THE STATES,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Now, with this GREAT Supreme Court Decision, our Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, may begin this very important process.”

NBC notes that the both the President and the Education Secretary have been open about their intent to shut down the Department of Education entirely. President Trump signed an executive order earlier this year directing his administration to “facilitate the closure of the Department of Education,” while Secretary McMahon wrote in a memo circulated to employees that her goal was to “shut down the department.”

It is also important to remember, as NBC notes, that Congress has not yet approved the closure of the Education Department. It remains to be seen how far the Trump administration will take its plan before it requires congressional approval.

In the meantime, let’s pray for President Trump and Secretary McMahon. Let’s pray for God to guide them as they reform, reshape, and ultimately shut down the Department of Education!
