This article is the historical account of a miraculous prayer walk that preceded one of the greatest spiritual and geopolitical victories of the past century. Be encouraged that our God Who did that then can do it again now.
Historians credit the tearing down of the Berlin Wall for the slow demise of the Soviet economy — alongside great pressure from the West, including President Ronald Reagan’s urgent call: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

Well, there is more to the story.
First, the background. For almost 40 years, the Soviet-dominated East German Communist Party had ruled East Germany with an iron fist. Dictator Erich Honecker threatened that death or imprisonment awaited anyone who dared to defy the German Democratic Republic (GDR).
There was one man willing to fight against this force, though perhaps not in the way you would think. Years before the Berlin Wall fell and Reagan’s famous speech, the Rev. Christian Führer started a simple prayer meeting he called Prayers for Peace. Every Monday the faithful would gather, light 40 candles (representing the Israelites’ 40 years in the wilderness), and pray for peace in Germany.
For some time, the authorities ignored them. Eventually, however, attendance grew into the thousands, and the GDR could no longer turn a blind eye. Spies began infiltrating the meetings and recording the names of those present. Agents of the GDR tried to intimidate Pastor Führer, once even leaving him out in the snow to die. Numerous adults who attended got fired from their jobs, even though the meetings had no political agenda. Young people then took the place of their parents at the prayer meetings, because they had no jobs to lose.
Despite persecution, attendees continued interceding for seven years. They saw little by way of tangible answers to prayer during those years. The only “answer” some could point to was Reagan’s speech, and even with that, two years had passed and the wall still stood.
Then, on Oct. 9, 1989, Pastor Führer convened the meeting but sensed that the Lord desired they do something different that week as they prayed. He began handing out candles to each attendee. The GDR army, meanwhile, having learned about an organized prayer walk, mobilized troops and even tanks to line the street leading from the church to the center of the city.
Pastor Führer had instructed his people to light their candles as they left the gathering and join other East Germans on the streets of Leipzig. Together they would peacefully march to the city center.
These prayer warriors risked their vocations and their lives, but as some 2,000 of them emerged from the church, they were met by 100,000 fellow candle-carrying Germans. Facing possible death, the intercessors approached the GDR troops that lined the street. Never had Honecker allowed this kind of defiance. Previously, troops would have shot any demonstrators against the regime. Russian tanks were lined up behind the soldiers pointing their machine guns at the growing crowd. Demonstrators bravely approached these soldiers (fellow Germans) and offered them lighted candles.
Amazingly, soldiers began putting down their weapons to receive the candles. Soon, all the soldiers had lowered their weapons and joined the protestors. The Russian tanks backed up, returning to their barracks. East German officials later said they were ready for anything “except candles and prayer.”
The next week Honecker resigned. One month later, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev began tearing down the Berlin Wall, and the German people knew that the courageous actions and miraculous events of Oct. 9, 1989, had been the true power leading to Germany’s reunification.

I grew up in Leipzig. I was 15 years old when the wall fell. It was truly amazing. The demonstrations happened every Monday at 7pm. One Monday my school class was watching a movie at the Main Train Stations movie theatre. When we came out the entire train station was full of soldiers who pointed guns at us. Somehow I remember thinking they looked very confused not sure what to do. We were told not to dare going to the Demonstration or be kicked out of school. But that sounded more like a challenge than a threat to a bunch of teenagers and many of us went. I wasn’t a believer back then and my parents had always kept me shielded from knowing too much out of fear I’d ask too many questions and get us in trouble. But that demonstration was an eye opener on so many levels and even though I didn’t know God, I remember feeling this awesome presence I couldn’t describe or understand at the time. I believe even now as believers stand up and pray and do what we can, there are others like I used to be on the sidelines that certainly are being touched and effected for a future time…

This is an amazing story that I was not aware of. Thank you for sharing! Father, may we in America be just as bold as these Christians in East Germany. That we would not wait until our physical enemies take over our country, if that should ever happen, but that we would recognize the spiritual war that we are currently in, and we would be as old to speak the truth in love! That Jesus us coming back soon, and the only way to be saved is to accept Him as Lord and Savior!
I cried reading this.
I appreciate those who desire to utilize the designated authority we have been given in Christ, but I see a disturbing trend in “loosing angels” or “commanding angels”, even in Jesus’ name. I have never seen a scriptural justification (in context) for it, and it may inadvertently be taking the Lord’s name in vain instead (commanding something He would never sanction). We have no authority over God’s angels. They are HIS angels, ministering spirits sent by God for our benefit (Hebrews 1). Jesus is their Captain, not us. We may ask that God dispatch angels for one thing or another, but that is His sovereign prerogative. I think this may have developed accidentally because of an assumption derived from the fact that we DO have delegated authority over demons. Even then, we must be careful to NOT go beyond this authority. I have heard of believers who have become afflicted by demons or even demonized themselves because they overstepped their authority or rebuked principalities or territorial spirits.
Real repentance, earnest praise, meaningful relationship with God and His Messiah, Our Savior are what the Bible instructs and what is needed. God’s Word tells us in tremendous depth the events and portents at the End of Days. There is more prophetic material on this time than ANY other subject, including Yeshua’s first ministry. So the events will occur. But the two families of God’s People can effect change and God’s will in these dark times. We should earnestly seek this out rather than being swept up in the godless, anti Christ tide of these times. We need to seek to be righteous and prepared or Christ’s coming Millennial Kingdom, showing ourselves to be aware, prepared, observant, righteous and waiting the completion of God’s plan for humanity. Pray, Study the Bible, seek God’s Holy Spirit fervently, daily, and remain watching and prepared for Yeshua to return for His Bride, His Church as prophesied. Endeavor to flee the wrath to come, the coming Tribulation. May Our Lord YESHUA HaMaschiach be with you all, and His Ruach Chodesh lead you in faith, love and grace! Shalom and Amen!
The Lord of heaven’s armies is on our side. There are too many people seriously praying for our Nation and this world to be ignored by our Lord Jesus Christ! He is faithful to His Word, and His Word is true.He knows the plans He has for our Nation, and those plans are to prosper, not to harm. He is a good, good Father.

Wow. I’m in tears right now. I never heard this story before but am so blessed to have read it now. It increases my faith in the power of prayer and courage in the face of such potential danger. God is still working today and we, in America, await the move of His hand as He has promised. The eagle will soar again and the world will see that it is God alone enabling this to happen. Wow!! A powerful example of Ephesians 6, with its depiction of “the whole armor of God.” Throughout the ages the Lord Jesus has been a faithful Captain.
May God grant the courage for those struggling to speak out and pray. Please give us warriors and leaders that will start a revival. Grant us all the strength to extend out arms to reach across America. For our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and generation to come may the people of this great nation see ahead the future of those children and protect our country. Our daughter visited the church in Leipzig where this occurred. The prayer meeting began with less than 10 people for a very long time. It is a beautiful account of God using a few faithful to do something AMAZING. He deserves all the glory.

Weeks later, Romanian citizens courageously faced the regime of Dictator Ceaucescu, ending communism in their country. Now we ask that you give our pastors bold and courageous leadership to end the approaching communism in America, restoring our duly elected President to his rightful office. I was living in Germany when the Berlin Wall came down. People celebrated! The air was filled with electric excitement!! Tears of joy flowed freely! Families and friends were reunited!

Walk, kneel, sit, whatever but primarily pour your heart towards the Father, He is the only help for our nation.
The gospel speaks that in Christ’s day many sought Him for food and miracles only. However, in the midst of these, a few of the many surrendered their lives to be with Him.
Today, this pattern still exists, many gather yet few surrender. You find the surrendered across the world (North Korea, China etc) even in places whose names are difficult to pronounce. Humbled in heart, forsaking sin, seeking only Him, while praying with passion they press on.
They are here in our country, as well, in closets and lonely places seeking fellowship with the Creator, in tears, in silence, thankful for His presence. Will those praying in closets and their faith be enough this time? The sins of our nation are increasing exponentially. Is this the end of time. We know that kingdoms have been destroyed for less.
Many are praying for Ukraine and other wars, He is answering prayers yet the wars continue. A merciful graceful loving God is our God, is He waiting in a closet for…….me.

I remember this amazing answer to prayer. October 9 is my birthday. Did you know that President Reagon and Pope John Paul II were close friends and frequently visited each other, either on phone, or personally?
I lived in Germany years ago before the wall came down. It was beautiful but there wasn’t much of the movement of God going on at that time. That would change later. There were beautiful old Church’s that sat idle through the week. I used to think, how sad. I was far from home and longed for Church.
Many years later I read this story today, and was reminded of the power of God and how miracles happen when God’s children take a prayerful and peaceful stand.
Today in my hometown where I have lived all of my life,there are dead Church’s. One never hears a word about anything that the Church’s have organized such as prayer walks and prayer vigils. There were times past where they did. During the last three years I have heard, not a word where a Pastor has spoken out from the Pulpit against, abortion,human trafficking,homosexuality,pedophilia and all of the other corrupt sins that are in our nation as well as our city.
I would go to Church and come away starving for the word of God, and saddened because I longed for a Church that was unafraid to preach against sin and to talk against what was happening in our city. To preach the hard,factual and powerful word of God that set’s us free !
The well known University is filled with young people who have been fed and raised on the right to kill unborn babies,Marxist ideals and take every opportunity to get in front of the local news cameras to spout their beliefs that are totally devoid of God and absolutely embrace Leftists views.
I see no Pastor’s or Christians on camera or anyplace speaking out for righteousness sake!
I think of Tiananmen Square,China. The students gathered to protest for democracy, free speech and a free press in China.
On June 4th and 5th. 1989. Students were massacred for asking a corrupt Government for what we in America are asking for now. Our Constitutional rights .While many students of today are not marching for freedom of speech but the right to murder unborn babies even after birth, gay rights and all the other ills that have come to vivid life during this time.
We do not want another Tiananmen Square to happen here.
I love my country and I am grateful to all of those many great grandparents that came before me to suffer hardships so that I and my children could have a better life. The one thing that was always passed down in our family from the long line of Pastors and Christian offspring is, prayer changes things. Having the faith to step out boldly for the Lord and doing what He calls us to do, will never leave us empty, but will bring the results that God called us to work for, for His glory.
I think that today, that it is totally within reason to make and appointment to meet with the potential Pastor of the Church we may want to become a part of and talk with them to find what their beliefs are, as well as their thoughts on prayer vigils and peaceful public gatherings and the list of evils that are plagueing our nation.
I am so thankful for IFA posting this inspiring story and causing us to remember about what can happen when God’s children pray,get peacefully involved and walk in God’s word and will.
Our nation and cities did not get this way overnight but God instructed us to pray for boldness and to put on mercy and kindness. God said that we take the Kingdom by force!

Many lives were lost those two days in Tiananmen Square in the peoples pursuit of freedoms that God wants us to have. The Communist wall is still up and even tighter around China today and it’s people more oppressed than ever but God is still God and He said that He was the same yesterday today and forever. That wall around China is coming down!
When things don’t just look really bad but are, let us remember, the children when they had their backs against the Red Sea with no place to go. that we still have hope and that God said……Faith is what we hope for but haven’t seen happen yet! But, by faith, it will because God is with us at all times and our Red Sea is going to part. I look forward to and believe that God has called each of us who are called by His precious and powerful name to play our part in helping to rebirth our wonderful nation and Government back into the Godly nation and lawmakers that He called us to be.

Father God,
We humbly and repentantly come before You to ask that You would call Your children to take a peaceful stand physically but to take a Spiritual stand fiercely against Satan, his evil spirits, demons and co-host and the hold they have over this current administration and their Cronies.
Teach us and lead us precious Lord and guide us as we each do what you called us to do. We give You all that we have Lord and come boldly to the Throne Room to request Your guidance in how we are to proceed to bring the change that you want for our nation and Government.

Lead us Dear Lord on how to proceed to be like the German people who marched peacefully for the wall to come down, thus bringing freedom to and reuniting Germany and family and friends.
We ask Father that You will continue to bless our nation,Your nation, and deliver us from the opression and evil that threatens our very way of life and the children’s future.

To release angels to destroy all demonic forces that that have taken up residence in the homes, churches, businesses, hospitals, schools and colleges. That not one escape in the name of JESUS of Nazareth. We know your word says there is power in your word and when we claim it in prayer with fasting it will move mountains for your kingdom glory. Next you have called me to pray this for the nations of the world which I will do. This morning you called me to contact 3 specific churches here in Az to do prayer walks. I will obey this plan too. I am privileged to be able to serve you LORD my FATHER in such a mighty & powerful way. I was called to contact pastor in Calif in 2019 to do prayer walks but none would join me in your plan. I went to my pastor and asked him to help. I thought it was because I was not a pastor but he replied “ good luck with that “ we can’t get together with them either. There is so much jealousy and competition in them. I replied it’s not about them it’s about our GOD ALMIGHTY It is a sad state we are in. The church body has been influenced by the world when it should be the influence on the world. The world is our LORD’S enemy & will be ours too. Prayer:” God never intended For Us to pray Scattershot Prayers”. When I saw these words I thought do we do this? I’ve heard people say; maybe God did not want you completely healed!! What, I do not believe those words: maybe this is all God wants for your healing it may not be complete but it’s better than before. Matt: 7 :7 it says “Ask” and it shall be given you John 24:14 “If you abide in ME” it shall be done. No where do I find these words Where God says a NO-the Bible -2 Corinthians:1-20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. Jesus, I’ve learned that if you pray the words of God and your prayer words line up with His words, you have a first hand “yes”. Yes, Jesus I understand now that Mark 11: :22,23,-25 “ Have Faith in God” For sure, I tell you, a person may say to this mountain, ‘Move from here into the sea.’ And if he does not doubt, but believes that what he says will be done, it will happen.” 24 Because of this, I say to you, whatever you ask for when you pray, have faith that you will receive it. Then you will get it. 25 When you stand to pray, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him. Then your Father in heaven will forgive your sins also. As I have learned to pray (2) words are essential-( Faith- Believe ) then I added forgiveness) . As I pray I say I believe, I want those words down in my Spirt. These words help release Faith. Forget your feelings, as a believer we must stand on Gods words=Faith- Father God that what happened in Germany- Will Not happen in America 🇺🇸, today and all the way up to Mid Terms Election and afterwards. I lift up prayers to heaven so we can feel the manifestation of Gods presence as we USE and Stand on our Faith. Father remove any “Ought” against any. Jesus I thank you for the reminder of forgiveness. Jesus I completely understand that as we pray for Miracles to happen as This election ends we will see a Red Wave, (Representation of Jesus Blood) and How God turned this election around. God many have been beaten up by words of hate, lies, but you are our restorer. Thank you Father God as you remind us the politicians we are mad at- we do no have to like what they have done, but forgiveness is an important part if we want our prayers answered. As our Faith kicks in we need to realize God has our backs he has heard our prayers, our cries. Father I do not believe my requests are selfish, I am believing the power of God will turn around this season of Satans power to Gods power. The scriptures and prayer that move mountains is the tool to simply (Believe ) as we use our voices to declare and release our Faith our prayers will be effective. Call down all 50 states to have voters to go personally and vote to help our Savior to take back a winning election. Say these word get out of comfort zones. I remember that whole event, remembering that the pastor had the prayer warriors pretend to throw prayer-rocks at the Berlin Wall as they prayed, using their very bodily actions in prayer to include the physical in their prayers! Praise God, shortly afterwards the wall was demolished by The people under Gorbachev’s regime. After so many people being gunned down who had tried to cross the wall, there was the tangible answer to prayer!! What a powerful testimony! We are so close, in this country, to being communist. People are getting “cancelled” because they don’t fall in line with what the special few want them to believe. People are getting fired from their jobs for supporting President Trump. May we, as a people, start our own “prayer walks” that cover our neighborhoods and stand against the dark soldiers that are trying to commandeer control of this country. I also pray that as people stand up with their “candles”, that others would see, and want to join. God, You overcame commumist Germany from the inside, Be with us to overcome the evil that is penetrating our country from the inside.

This article was very encouraging to me. If those people who faced great danger can do what they did, than we, here in America, who still have the freedom to worship and pray, can do the same. We as God’s children have seen changes take place over the past few months and throughout the years because of faith and trust we have in a loving Father who cares for us and protects us. Truly, there is no doubt that prayer moves the heart of God and causes change. The Word of God, human history, and personal testimonies bear witness.
However, we are sometimes blinded and skip over the “if” and “then” attached to some promises. Believers are subject under His rule, not Him to ours. He has the 30,000 foot view that we lack. He calls us to pray, we meet His conditions, and He works His plan. Its all about Him.
“Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.”
There is NO however if we pray according to HIS WORD! The Bible says he not only will hear our petitions, but HE will answer!
