An Israel-bound passenger jet triggered a major security response after transmitting an international emergency code indicating a possible hijacking, leading Israel to scramble fighter jets and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to consult with senior security officials.

Find out when your state prays.

The aircraft ultimately landed safely in Saudi Arabia, but accounts from the flight describe a frightening confrontation in the cockpit that reportedly caused the plane to lose control and plunge thousands of feet.

From CBN News:

Fly Dubai Flight 1073 was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the aircraft suddenly transmitted “7500,” the international emergency code for possible unlawful interference or hijacking.

Israel scrambled fighter jets while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior security officials held urgent consultations.

The plane then changed course, eventually landing safely in Saudi Arabia. Yasmin Abukasis’s daughter called her from the flight.

According to Israeli officials cited in the report, the emergency apparently began with a violent altercation between the aircraft’s two pilots, with reports that one pulled a knife on the other. Yasmin Abukasis, whose daughter was aboard the flight, said passengers heard shouting and screaming and a pilot calling for help.

Abukasis said the aircraft began losing control before two other pilots took over. Several Israelis aboard the plane reportedly rushed toward the man involved in the confrontation and helped restrain him after he allegedly attempted to attack the other pilot with a knife. At one point during the incident, the aircraft plunged more than 13,000 feet. Authorities are now investigating what caused the extraordinary confrontation.

The incident comes at an already tense moment for Israel. Netanyahu has warned that there are indications Israel’s enemies could attempt an attack ahead of the country’s October 27 election. Speaking from an Israeli Air Force base, the prime minister issued a warning: “Don’t mess with us, not now, not ever. Our long arm will reach you anywhere, at any time.” Netanyahu also reportedly held discussions with Gulf leaders over the weekend focused partly on Iran and its proxies.

Israel has since confirmed that the attack was in fact a jihadist terrorist attack. According to The Daily Wire, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Wednesday, “The serious incident aboard the FlyDubai aircraft was an attempted jihadist terrorist attack, which was thwarted only thanks to the bravery of several Israeli passengers who broke into the cockpit, overpowered the terrorist, and with their own hands returned control of the aircraft to an additional flight crew that was present there.”

Meanwhile, another significant development could affect security throughout the region. The U.S. military has completed its withdrawal from Iraq, bringing the U.S.-led coalition’s 12-year military mission there to an end. The departure has raised concerns that Iranian-backed militias or ISIS could take advantage of the resulting vacuum.

From a terrifying emergency aboard an Israel-bound flight to threats from hostile forces and changing security dynamics in Iraq, Israel continues to face uncertainty on multiple fronts. For intercessors, these developments are another reminder of the importance of covering Israel and its people in prayer. Let’s thank God that the passengers aboard this flight reached the ground safely, and let’s pray for protection over Israel, wisdom for Prime Minister Netanyahu and other leaders, and that every plan intended to bring violence and destruction would be exposed and thwarted.
