In an interview, Pope Francis suggested that Ukraine should have “the courage of the white flag.” Ukraine quickly condemned his comments, but a Vatican spokesman said they were misinterpreted. What do you think?

According to a transcript quoted by Reuters news agency, the Pope was asked to comment on a debate between those who want Ukraine to seek a settlement with Russia – or wave the “white flag”, as the interviewer put it – and those who argue that doing so would legitimise aggression.

The Pope was quoted as saying: “The strongest one is the one who looks at the situation, thinks about the people and has the courage of the white flag, and negotiates.” …

During his nightly video address on Sunday, President Zelensky … praised the work of Ukrainian chaplains on the frontline. …

“This is what the church is – it is together with people, not two-and-a-half thousand kilometres away somewhere, virtually mediating between someone who wants to live and someone who wants to destroy you.”

Earlier on Sunday Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on social media: “Our flag is a yellow and blue one. This is the flag by which we live, die, and prevail. We shall never raise any other flags.” …

In response to the row, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the Pope had “picked up the image of the white flag, proposed by the interviewer, to indicate… a truce reached with the courage of negotiation”.

He added the Pope had made it clear that “negotiations are never a surrender”. …

Heavenly Father, we know this is a spiritual battle as well as an earthly one. Continue to strengthen and grow Your church even amidst this difficult time. We ask that peace would come quickly and assuredly. Bind up the broken-hearted and renew those whom have suffered greatly. Let the mountain of destruction be removed and the darkness to fail. Plant humility and grace where harm once trod. LORD bring an end to this war and usher in Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

Lord, please bring peace to Ukraine! Lives are being destroyed by this war waged by entities far away from the common people of Ukraine. Please use your infinite powers to cause natural phenomena to prevent the “Spring killing” of citizens and soldiers. Let your light expose the motives of those sustaining this war so that the world will clearly realize the uncountable deaths of people, devastation of nature and loss of farming which is relied on by millions of people for food outside Ukraine. Forgive me for my boldness to the one who judges everyone including me to bring judgement on the leaders who continue this war for selfish gain.
