President Donald Trump announced a major breakthrough on July 30, saying Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza have agreed to fully disarm. Officials are calling it a historic step that could pave the way for lasting peace between Israel and Gaza, following talks with Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. “The Board of Peace reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza. This is a monumental step toward lasting PEACE and SECURITY,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. The president said that “Israel will have the security it deserves, with Gaza no longer used as a base for terror attacks.”

The agreement will happen in stages.

Phases include making all military operations in Gaza stop, which will be followed by decommissioning heavy weapons, tunnels, and production sites in the Gaza Strip.

“As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza being safe for its residents and its neighbors,” the president said.

Trump acknowledged that there was still “much work to do” as he thanked the mediators in Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey who made the agreement possible.

This agreement comes nearly two years after Hamas launched a deadly terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking hundreds of hostages into Gaza. Since then, Israel has fought to dismantle Hamas and bring the hostages home, a war that has drawn both strong support and strong criticism from around the world. Trump also said Gaza will eventually be run by a new government, one that works closely with the Board of Peace on behalf of the Palestinian people, rather than under Hamas control. U.S. officials say a Palestinian police force has already begun training to take over from Hamas, and the entire process could take up to a year, depending on how smoothly each step goes. Officials also said the long-term goal is to help Gaza build a free market economy that creates jobs, though they acknowledged significant humanitarian aid and rebuilding will be needed in the near term.

The Bible tells us to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6) and to support Israel’s right to live safely alongside its neighbors. If Hamas truly disarms, it would be a major win for peace, removing a group that has openly sought Israel’s destruction and endangered lives on both sides. Let us stay watchful and remember that real, lasting peace isn’t just about political deals. It also depends on protecting human life and dignity for everyone in the region, both Israeli and Palestinian.
