Outside money has become a powerful force in modern elections, often shaping public opinion through organizations that many voters have never heard of. As the 2026 midterm elections draw closer, newly uncovered corporate filings are providing a clearer picture of how one Democratic-aligned network may be preparing to influence key Senate and House races across the country.

The records connect a Washington, D.C.-based organization to a growing collection of state-specific groups with names designed to sound local. Watchdog groups say the strategy can make national political campaigns appear to be grassroots efforts, raising fresh concerns about transparency as voters begin paying closer attention to the upcoming election cycle.

Affordable Maine is just one of the dozens of trade names registered by the Opportunity Action Fund, including multiple other “affordable” state-focused groups. The trade names shed light on where Democrats may pour untraceable money next — even as many of the party’s candidates denounce dark money and corporate PACs.

Corporate filings show all of the trade names registered by the Opportunity Action Fund are competitive politically: Affordable Virginia, Affordable Pennsylvania, Affordable Georgia, Affordable Iowa, Affordable Alaska, Affordable Maine, Affordable Ohio, Affordable Michigan, and Affordable North Carolina.

Caitlin Sutherland, the executive director of Americans for Public Trust, a watchdog group that first flagged the corporate filings, told the Daily Wire that these trade names are used to disguise the fact that groups dumping into races aren’t as local as they claim to be. She said that trade names should be viewed as a “costume” to hide the true nature of where the spending originates.

The Opportunity Action Fund first drew national attention in Maine after Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner exited the race following rape allegations against him. Shortly afterward, a group known as Affordable Maine spent $2.5 million on television advertisements criticizing Republican Sen. Susan Collins over her confirmation vote for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and her pro-life voting record.

Corporate records show the Opportunity Action Fund was registered in Washington, D.C., in February 2025. Its filings include an email address affiliated with Elias Law, the firm founded by Democratic attorney Marc Elias, who has represented Democratic candidates and challenged voter integrity laws. The organization’s listed directors previously held several positions working for House Democrats.

The filings also connect the Opportunity Action Fund to Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy, a Democratic-aligned organization whose affiliated PAC has announced plans to spend $50 million during the 2026 midterm elections. According to the campaign, that spending will focus on Senate races in North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Maine, and Ohio, as well as House races in Iowa and Pennsylvania. Each of those states has a corresponding “Affordable” trade name registered through the Opportunity Action Fund.

Some of those state organizations are already active. Affordable Pennsylvania has targeted several Republican members of Congress with advertising and has promoted events criticizing their voting records. Other state-based groups, including Affordable Iowa, appear to be preparing for future activity, with websites indicating they will launch soon. Sutherland told the Daily Wire that voters should carefully examine the organizations behind political advertisements and consider who is funding the messages they receive.

Scripture calls us to walk in truth and to value honesty in every sphere of society, including government and elections. Transparency allows voters to make informed decisions and hold organizations accountable for the messages they promote. As campaigns intensify ahead of the midterm elections, let us pray that truth would prevail over deception, that all of these dark money networks would be exposed and punished, that voters would exercise discernment, and that those seeking public office would conduct themselves with integrity and honesty.
