Mamdani Wants Proof of ID for Grocery Stories, but Not Elections?
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s proposal to create taxpayer-funded grocery stores is drawing renewed scrutiny after officials confirmed shoppers will need a city-issued identification card to receive discounted prices. The requirement has fueled criticism from opponents who argue it conflicts with Mamdani’s longstanding opposition to voter ID laws.

According to city officials, the proposed grocery stores would offer staple items such as milk, bread, and cheese at prices roughly 30% below those found at traditional retailers. To prevent customers from purchasing discounted goods and reselling them for profit, shoppers would be required to obtain a city-issued identification card similar to a library card before receiving the reduced prices.
The policy has quickly become a flashpoint in the broader debate over identification requirements. Mamdani and many of his Democratic Socialists of America allies have consistently opposed voter ID laws, arguing they create barriers to participation in elections. Critics, however, contend that requiring identification to purchase discounted groceries while rejecting identification at the ballot box represents an inconsistent standard.
President Donald Trump weighed in on the proposal during a recent appearance, saying, “I wish they’d have an ID to access the voting booth… We want voter ID, and we want proof of citizenship.” His comments echoed concerns raised by many conservatives who argue that verifying identity is appropriate for elections if it is considered necessary for other government-administered programs.
The grocery initiative remains in its early stages. City officials have announced plans for five stores, with the first not expected to open before the end of 2027. Because New York City does not operate grocery stores, officials are seeking private partners to manage the locations while the city provides funding and oversight.
The proposal has also sparked debate over its overall cost and effectiveness. Some critics argue taxpayer dollars would be better directed toward expanding existing programs such as food banks, Meals on Wheels, or other organizations already serving families facing food insecurity. Others question whether creating an entirely new government-run retail system is the most efficient use of public resources.
This is not the first time identification requirements under the Mamdani administration have generated controversy. Earlier this year, New York City faced criticism after requiring multiple forms of identification for residents seeking to register as emergency snow shovelers during a major winter storm.
As debate continues, the proposal has become part of a larger conversation about the role of government, public spending, and whether identification requirements should be applied consistently across public programs. For many Americans, the discussion extends beyond grocery stores to broader questions of fairness, election integrity, and equal standards under the law. Let’s pray that Mayor Mamdani and other leaders like him would be wise stewards of taxpayer funds!

The government should not be running grocery stores. If the government is searching for ways to help people buy groceries, it should be directing people to already established food banks
My prayer for Mandami and all his cohorts is that he would be confronted with his sinful fallen state that can only land him eternity in hell if he does not repent and turn to seek and follow Jesus.
It would take a miracle for mandani and all those who think like him to be responsible stewards of taxpayers money which God is capable of doing. I predict this is just another fraud scheme for him and his evil buddies to steal taxpayers money and after millions of dollars are gone and no-one held accountable as in Minnesota. mandani and all those like him care nothing for people just power. God protect us from this evil of satan.

Elections need to have a photo ID to vote to eliminate fraud. This is why Trump is pushing Save America so much.
It’s just a plan to make citizens more dependent on government. And looking to them for a hand out. Shame on citizens for being so selfish.
Lord Jesus, please bring ALL efforts of this misguided, evil man to fail miserably, and please allow this to happen before the midterm elections this fall. What happens when Socialism/communism takes over a government is control and failure to respect individual freedoms. Please bring people in America to see this mislead movement for the failure that it truly is. Thank you Jesus.
