To prevent customers from purchasing discounted goods and reselling them for profit, shoppers would be required to obtain a city-issued identification card similar to a library card before receiving the reduced prices.

This is not the first time identification requirements under the Mamdani administration have generated controversy. Earlier this year, New York City faced criticism after requiring multiple forms of identification for residents seeking to register as emergency snow shovelers during a major winter storm.
