I Prayed have prayed
Lord, protect the ICE officers who are trying to keep our country safe from illegal criminals. Convict those who are opposed to deporting foreign criminals, and may the DHS and our law enforcement continue to protect American citizens. Amen.

A shooting during an immigration arrest in New York City has become the latest flashpoint over federal enforcement and local sanctuary policies. An ICE officer shot a man from the Dominican Republic on Thursday in the Marble Hill neighborhood, near the Bronx. DHS says he is in the country illegally and has suspected gang ties.

The case involves public safety, the safety of officers, and the safety of a child who was reportedly in the vehicle. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Homeland Security officials have drawn sharply different conclusions about it, and the facts are still being sorted out.

From the Daily Wire:

An ICE officer shot an illegal immigrant with suspected gang ties during a targeted arrest operation in New York City, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told The Daily Wire.

In a statement Thursday evening, Mamdani called the shooting “unconscionable” and said early reports indicated that federal officers surrounded the suspect’s vehicle with a child inside, before firing.

DHS pushed back against New York’s sanctuary policies, arguing that local officials’ refusal to cooperate with federal immigration authorities forces ICE officers to make arrests in public, where encounters can become unpredictable.

At a Friday press conference, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin identified the injured man as Oscar Belgal. Mullin said Belgal entered the country illegally and has a long record of crime. He called Mamdani’s rhetoric dangerous and said it incites hostility toward officers. He also asked who would remove criminals from the city’s streets if ICE were abolished. Mamdani had said Thursday that ICE has harmed more New Yorkers than it has protected, and he renewed his call to abolish the agency.

Marcos Charles, an executive associate director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, gave the agency’s account of the arrest attempt. He said Belgal refused lawful orders to leave his vehicle, then accelerated into two government vehicles and drove toward other officers. Charles said Belgal had evaded agents who tried to arrest him in September. Mullin said officers did not know a child was in the vehicle, but that Belgal did. These are the government’s claims, and the investigation is not finished.

The FBI and Homeland Security investigators are reviewing what happened. Gov. Kathy Hochul, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Rep. Adriano Espaillat have called for investigations, and Hochul asked that any body camera footage be made public. DHS has said that not all ICE field officers have body cameras, citing funding shortfalls during government shutdowns. The NYPD said its officers were not part of the operation or at the scene. DHS also said New York police arrested Belgal in December 2023 and the city released him days later. Reports describe angry crowds at the scene and outside the hospital, including assaults on law enforcement.

Scripture treats public order and the protection of the innocent as serious responsibilities. Romans 13:1-4 says governing authorities are meant to restrain evil and protect the good, and Proverbs 24:11 calls us to rescue those headed for harm, which includes a child caught in a dangerous moment. Scripture also asks for patience with facts. Proverbs 18:13 warns that answering before listening is folly and shame. The truth here should come out through thorough, honest investigation, not through rhetoric or mob action. Every person involved bears the image of God, from the officers to the injured man to the child, and each deserves justice and dignity.

Let’s pray for the injured man’s recovery and for the child’s well-being and peace. Let’s pray for the ICE officers and for the safety of all law enforcement in New York. Let’s pray that the investigation is truthful and complete, and that the facts come to light. Let’s pray for Mayor Mamdani, Gov. Hochul, Secretary Mullin, and President Donald Trump to lead with wisdom, and for calm in New York City’s streets.
