I Prayed have prayed
Lord, as political fights rage in America, we ask You to guide the Church and every believer. Let every denomination follow Your will, being in the world but not of it (John 17:14).

The Southern Baptist Convention is the latest Christian denomination to fracture over liberal theology, this time about immigration. Will the denomination survive this struggle and right the ship, or will we begin to see a mass exodus as Bible-believing churches go elsewhere?

From The Federalist. Over the past decade, a growing divide has emerged within the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), as denominational leaders have increasingly framed left-leaning border policies as a Christian imperative.

Who is praying on the wall?

Last week, Baptist Press, the official news service of the SBC, publishedĀ an articleĀ by Trevin Wax, a vice president at the SBCā€™s North American Mission Board, in which he defended his denominationā€™s participation in ā€œrefugee resettlementā€ against those he claimed have a ā€œdeep misunderstanding of how disaster relief, foster care or refugee resettlement takes place.ā€

This comes on the heels of the Center for Baptist Leadership (a conservative element in the SBC)Ā discovering that the SBCā€™s Send Relief, in partnership with World Relief, ā€œtook nearly $70,000 in Biden State Department fundsā€ for ā€œrefugee resettlement.ā€ …

The fault lines emerging over this issue are not new, and they are likely to grow as members of Americaā€™s largest Protestant denomination prepare for their annual meeting in June. Southern Baptist voters tend to be politically conservative and were part of theĀ 82 percentĀ of evangelicals who favored Donald Trump for president in 2024. However, the denominationā€™s leadership class has made immigrant assistance a test of Christian love and thus driven the denomination into opposing conservative border policies.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift away from charity alone and toward politically advocating for asylum seekers. The SBCā€™s 2023Ā resolution ā€œOn Wisely Engaging Immigrationā€ is much different from a similar resolution from 2006 in that it gives the government the responsibility to ā€œcare for migrantsā€ and promotes using immigration to diversify churches. …

This shift was largely engineered by the now-former president of the SBCā€™s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), Russell Moore, and is carried on today by his successor Brent Leatherwood. …

According toĀ Capstone Report, Moore received grant money from the National Immigration Forum for participating in an ā€œimmigration reform campaignā€ in 2015. That same year, the Open Societies Foundation identified Southern Baptists as recipients of funding for ā€œrefugee advocacy.ā€ …

In 2019, denomination leaders like Leatherwood and Dean Inserra signed anĀ Evangelical Call for Restitution-Based Immigration ReformĀ published by the Evangelical Immigration Table. The statement portrayed deportation as unjust, insinuated the United States government was to blame for separating families, and supported a restitution-based ā€œpathway to Legal Permanent Residencyā€ for illegal migrants.

For the next four years, during Joe Bidenā€™s presidency, the SBC took hardly any action on immigration issues despite the fact that illegal migrants poured across the border at record numbers. Then suddenly,Ā LeatherwoodĀ and theĀ ERLCĀ took a strong stand in February 2024 to support Lankfordā€™s ā€œEmergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act,ā€ which prohibited Homeland Security from continuing to exercise emergency authority to respond to the border crisis if the weekly crossings were underĀ 21,000 encounters per week. …

Clearly, a rift is emerging in the SBC between Trump-supporting members and leaders opposing his policies. The USAID incentive has been turned off by the Trump administration, but groups that benefitted from government gravy will try to reestablish a connection. The question is whether conservative members will keep funding groups like the ERLC and electing presidents who fail to hold groups like Send accountable. …

Would it not be a far more pragmatic and ultimately Christian pursuit to attempt to understand WHY the nations we have provided untold millions in humanitarian aid towards for about 50 years is such a hellhole that EVERYONE wants out and to come to the USA?
If you lived in a village with a river passing by and every day some of you had to fish children out of the river before they drowned, how long before some of you would go UPRIVER to find out why the children were being thrown in the river?

Nothing to fracture over. Does any sane person think we can eliminate national borders and then expect the working people of this country to support millions of people who use up our social security, tax dollars and emergency rooms, and put foreigners up in 5 star hotels while North Carolinians (aka Americans) starve and freeze? To say nothing of violent criminals murdering and raping our citizens? Following Jesus has nothing to do with comforting ourselves into thinking we are ā€œgoodā€
people by ā€œhelpingā€people invade and destroy this country in order to serve the satanic globalist agenda and create more democrat voters. Foreigners in ancient Israel were expected to assimilate and especially expected not to bring in and worship of foreign gods which, by the way, are overrunning this nation. As Paul said, let those who do not work also not eat. Bringing in a underclass of dependent people is diabolical, even if we ā€œlikeā€ some of them so we can feel we are ā€œgoodā€ Christians. Itā€™s all one huge scam and since an honest person is difficult to scam, the pro-immigration ā€œchurchā€ is showing its real motive. Nothing Godly about it.

We pray for our church leaders that they would truly seek your will in these issues facing our country. I pray that our pastors would not be bought off with bribes but would seek to do what they hear you telling them on the issues that are facing our nation. Give the church creative insight and wisdom to deal with immigration and love our neighbors at the same time.

As one who has attended Southern Baptist churches for decades, I am saddened to learn how increasingly deceived they have become. The issue seems to be lack of divine guidance as well as ignorance of what has actually occurred over the last four years – a foreign invasion. Dozens of nations were involved – and mostly military aged men and other unvetted groups. Taking USAID funds via the atheist Soros’ Open Society organization reveals deficient wisdom at the SBC. The prior installed administration had an astonishingly evil agenda to cause chaos and destruction in the USA for a globalist takeover. The Lord Jesus calls us to be as wise as serpents and gentle as doves. Deporting the millions who broke our federal laws is important – as is the assurance of entry for those who do qualify as acceptable. Misplaced compassion for criminals only leads to societal harm and squashed liberty. Praying the SBC and other denominations will revive and awaken to the false notions they have embraced. May the Holy Spirit lead them into truth that brings abundant life for all who seek it!

    AMEN! Glory4JC!

Couldnā€™t have articulated that any better!

    We must have borders.
And praise God we have a beautiful pathway to citizenshipā€¦ foreigners gotta follow the rules.

Also, hopefully the good illegals that gotta go back who have experienced the love of Jesus here and want to come back, will come back the legal way and be a blessing and asset to our society.

Please wake up SBC. Itā€™s a very dark slippery slope youā€™re dealing with under the guise of ā€œloveā€.
