This article was submitted hours before the tragic shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Is there any doubt that our schools need prayer?

As we approach the 60th anniversary of Engel v. Vitale—the June 25, 1962 Supreme Court decision which removed school-sponsored prayer from schools—I am reminded of this Scripture:
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up” (James 4:7-10).
For many years, we have been seeing the tragic results of removing acknowledgement of God from schools. Instead of seeking Him first and dedicating each day to Him, many people in the schools have flaunted their pride as they persecute Christians and forbid prayer in almost any format. Violence has broken out in so many places, and schools are unprotected as too many Christians are silent.
We need to acknowledge God in our schools again.
If prayer must be student-led, then it must—but we need to pray for our students to actually rise up and lead prayer. We also need to pray for protection for teachers who exercise their own freedoms of speech and religion by praying in their own right.
If you also are burdened with the welfare and safety of students and schools, then pray the prayer below with me. Let’s ask the Lord together to help us see prayer back in schools:
“Dear Heavenly Father, we come to You in Jesus’ name.
Father God, thank You for hearing and answering our prayers. Thank You that You are a great and merciful God, and You are a God who does miracles. You are also a good Father who loves us, Your children, and we know that You have compassion on our children as well Thank You for being a Father and Helper to the fatherless and helpless, Lord.
Abba Father, we need You to manifest Yourself in our schools.
Our children endure such difficulties in school. Schools are often full of bullies, perversion, peer pressure, danger, and sin of every type. Our little babies are not strong enough to defend themselves, Lord. And even when we teach them the best we can, they still need Your help.
Father God, we are desperate for Your manifest presence in our schools.
And Lord, we know that You manifest Yourself where people pray. Your Word says that “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). So Father, we ask today in Jesus’ name:
- That You would give every student and teacher the burden to pray to You in their schools.
- That students would stand up to lead prayer.
- That teachers would be examples in prayer, showing their students what praying men of God and praying women of God look like.
- That You would protect every teacher’s right to pray and express their own faith in You.
- That You would protect every student’s rights to free speech and freedom of religion when it comes to prayer and witnessing for you.
- That lunchrooms and classrooms, gymnasiums and athletic fields would become prayer rooms.
- That the sound of prayer would rise like incense from our schools at the students’ own volition.
- That You would pour out Your Spirit of grace and supplication on every person in the school systems—students and teachers alike—and that they would begin to pray to You without ceasing, even if they do not truly know You yet.
- That Christian clubs and support networks would arise and mobilize to witness for You in the schools.
- That godly churches would have a passion for evangelizing in the schools, and that doors would be open to them on every side.
Abba Father, we ask also that righteous legislation would arise to undo the restrictions on prayer in schools. Let godly laws be placed on every ballot and every legislature—and voted in. Let every righteous vote be implemented and not blocked or hindered. Let every court rule in favor of the free exercise of Christian prayer and worship in schools as well, Father, in Jesus’ name.
Father God, in the name of Jesus, let revival burst forth in every school in America—public and private. We ask that You would do a great miracle and mobilize Your people by Your Spirit to pray for the schools and in the schools again. And as You show us how to do this, please help us to yield to You and cooperate with You.
Thank You, Heavenly Father. We love You, and we give You all the praise. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.”

Oh, God of all comfort, I come to you in total desperation crying out for our nation, America. I pray for the Body of Christ, Your Church. I pray for a great awakening of The Holy Spirit. While we slept, the enemy came in and replaced our schools with murder. Forgive us for allowing this to happen. We have become so involved in being great Republicans or Democrats that we have taken our eyes off of the reality of who we are. We are Your workmanship. What have we done? Father God, I ask that You would raise up a new generation of bold soldiers, children that are not fearful of the government but have reverence for You. They need your protection in their schools. My prayer is that they will be the ones to bring prayer back to schools. Let it begin with one and spread like wildfire across this nation.

Since prayer in schools has been outlawed, evil has allowed to flourish in schools in the USA! Father God, we deserve your punishment for this! But please deliver us from our own evil and come back to schools again! May new laws be made and enforced, allowing our children to pray and seek Your face! I pray not only for schools in America but also in Canada where as the wife of a Canadian I reside. What happens in America affects Canada what happens in Canada also affects Americans. Christians are my people regardless of what they look like as are Americans. I do pray that God will bring about much revival, in both America and Canada. May He reign sovereign and supreme in our governments and schools. May He remove those bent upon wickedness and the indoctrination of wickedness upon our children and adults. May He open the eyes and hearts of all American and Canadian citizens to rise up to stand for God and Godly values repenting of any evil in our lives. May the Lord help my husband and me as we are in preparation for my husband to become a permanent resident in the U.S., for us to return to the USA to live, in Jesus most precious and mighty name, amen.

Dear Lord, please convert every heart and protect every soul from the evil one and his intentions, especially protect all children, young people and families. Help every heart to know that you are Lord and that you are Lord of everyone and everything, especially our families and children…and for us to seek only that which is true, good and beautiful and to keep our children and families pure. Lord please help us. Lord I lift up all of the children in this world to you. I pray that they will know you and will seek you. We need prayer back in our schools more than any of this other stuff they are throwing at us in the schools. It complete bias and discrimination to not allow prayer in our schools. Our very forefathers prayed for our nation and families and all that pertained to life and the pursuit of happiness and liberty and freedom for all.
Thank you Lord that you hear our prayers. I pray that every school in America would have at least “2 or3” raised up to pray for their school. I pray that prayer returns to our schools and on athletic fields and in the public arena.

Father, plant a Moms in Prayer group for every school in our nation (moms who gather to pray for children and schools). Equip students to pray at their schools as only You can. Would middle school and high school Christian student leaders be guided and inspired to pray through Claim Your Campus (equipping students to pray with themes, verses and prayer points from CYC downloaded app). Place a CEF (Child Evangelism Fellowship- Good News Club!) group in EVERY elementary school so the gospel is spread and young students come to salvation, pray and spread the faith. Raise up bold, courageous, faith-filled students who bring the Spirit of God inside the walls of their schools. Answer our prayers, Miracle-Working God!
Our schools need Jesus be us the only answer Thank you Jesus that you love us and our children.
God placed it on my heart many years ago to prayer walk around our high school. On Tuesday mornings as I walk around the school campus, I intercede as the Holy Spirit leads. God is at work as I have been approached by crossing guards and teachers who are thankful for the prayers. When we pray around the schools God will work within the schools.

Father, children are being raised by nonchristian parents,, educated in schools where You are dishonored and rejected. Laws are being passed that encourage destructiv behavior. Classrooms are striving to remove all parental control of students. Is there any wonder that violence perpetrated by our youth has skyrocketed to unbelieveable heights? Well said. Instead of suing gun manufacturers (which is what the atheistic left wants to do), maybe we should sue the Supreme Court justices who favor removing prayer from public schools.
I am writing a book to steps in bringing our public schools back under God. It starts with giving parents rights to choose the school they want their child in. When that happens the Public Schools will begin to feel the money pinch and then they will begin to feel the need to bring God back in so they could get their money back….
Because Prayer has been out of Schools for such a long time..there is not a mention I can think of from the Media, our Leaders, or even most Churches that the missing ingredient to making sure schools are truly peaceful and safe places is the heartbreaking fact that prayer has been taken out of our schools…causing the downward spiral

Prayer is the most powerful word to God. Jesus gave us prayer before he died The blessed Virgin Mary gave us the rosaries to pray. What more proof do we need. Prayer to God is our inner soul crying out.

Public schools could actually become a benefit to this society of prayer were manifest in them.
In 1963, my parents led the fight in Baltimore against Madilyn Murray (O’Hare) who singlehandedly managed to take the fight from Baltimore to the Supreme Court. The main reason all of the petitions and peaceful protests, that my parents led had little affect, is because they did not have the support of the church. It was at that point that America seemed to lose her moral compass. 60 years later, look how far we have fallen! My parents are now in their 90’s and how satisfying would it be for them to see their prayers and efforts fulfilled. It’s time for the church to get involved!!!!
The place to start to correct a wrong or an error is to go back tk the beginning. The fall of America started when prayer was taken out of schools , this can be fixed if prayer was allowed once again in schools.

I pray that the Supreme Court has the courage to reverse the ruling barring prayer in school, just like they appear to be close to reversing the horrible Roe v Wade decision. They’ve both been some of the Court’s most unintelligent and destructive rulings in the history of our country.
I think it might be important for each of us individually and in groups where possible to pray for the School district where our children attend or we pay taxes. I believe we have greater authority in these situations. When it is possible prayer walking at or around the school is powerful.

Lord put prayer back in schools
Lord Jesus I come before your Throne of Grace Lord asking you to first forgive me of my sins Lord. Give me a clean heart and hands as I stand before your Throne Lord. Father God I pray Lord that you with all power, authority and grace Lord Jesus will bring back prayer in our schools Lord. Our children and the teachers Lord need to know you Lord. Lord I pray in the mighty name of Jesus that a hedge of protection over our children and teachers be placed by you ! Our country needs prayers
Prayer back in all public schools! That and raising the age when a person can purchase a firearm. Background checks and whether or not the buyer has a rap sheet and history of mental health issues. I know that mental health diagnoses are protected by HIPPA laws but we’re talking about potential homicides if the wrong person gets hold of a firearm as in Texas this week. The Second Amendment is untouchable in my opinion because a person can always find a way to purchase a firearm through the black market. As they say “the only way to stop a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun,” even if we have to put them in the hands of security in our schools. Children are the target of the evil one through abortion and now with mentally ill people going into elementary and secondary schools where they are sitting ducks. Men of the age of many of these school shootings have a mental health issue that surfaces around this age AND many schools have satanic clubs that have been allowed to meet on school property. Of course this is all satanic! Horrible!

Daddy God please touch those hearts of the men and women that would allow the school system to have prayer back in our schools across America . Without your divine intervention Lord we are going to fail and keep failing. While it is the Christian’s responsibility to pray, it is a secular government’s urgent, manifest responsibility to protect all children from the terrible consequences of secularized education until The Lord returns. Waiting is not an option.

I’m also praying, Father, that You arm ALL teachers and school workers with guns, just like it is in Isreal. School shootings in Israel do not happen there, simply because teachers are well armed. According to a video I saw awhile back, when an Israeli teacher opened her door to the students, she had an AR 15 rifle strapped on her shoulder. We need that here in America now!!
What we really need is not more guns in schools, but an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on every child and teacher. The ONLY solution to violence in schools is a transformation of the human heart.

This summer let’s start to walk around the public schools in our community and pray for teachers and students. They have safety and the students start praying, God starts moving within the children and teachers. I am starting .
I was 6 yrs old when they came in and took the Ten Commandments off the walls. Then at 8 yrs old stopped prayer in school. I grew up in a Christian home where we had Bible study, family dinner and worship together. We need families to step up. Father and mother come together. Put aside your differences. I’m now in my late 60’s. My grandchildren are in Christian homes where they have the same experiences I grew up with. Pass it on!

I’m in a moms’ prayer group called moms in prayer, we pray 45 minutes a week for our children or grandchildren and their schools. Very meaningful. moms in prayer.org
This is a wonderful pray for putting prayer back in the schools. When prayer was dropped from the school agenda, a wall of God’s protection was removed, and demonic forces took advantage of this loss of prayer covering. We need to pray without ceasing that parents, teachers and students will pray and invite God’s presence back in our schools. We, as citizens of every city need to pray and provide a prayer covering over our schools. Do prayer walks around our schools; drive around our schools, praying for a fire wall protection around them and a blood covering over them. I believe that as we do this, fear will come upon the wicked and unrighteous, and they will flee from the presence of Almighty God!
Lord God I pray for wisdom on being able to open the doors to prayer once more in our school. I pray that people would see the need of prayer and to be a Christ follower is so important for their life and others as well. Bring a revival Lord to this great country that is being torn apart in hate.

Yes I prayed. I stand in agreement with your prayers. My heart is broken because of this terrible tragedy. As an educator, I too intercede for my students, staff and all their families. May the Lord bring comfort to all the families ad community in Uvalde. May He pour down His Spirit and download His powerful incense in our schools again. Heavenly FAther, our kids, their teachers and the security/DPS personnel need your protection and wisdom to identify and limit those attacks from the enemy over them. Please surround them with supernatural protection and in the name of Jesus we protect them with his preciuos blood, we state that our kids are Yours and no evil will get close to them. The most important thing I remember about my high school senior year , 1968, was the fact that every morning we had a devotional read over the intercom and prayer was said. It started our day right. There were no drugs in school or guns, knives. Girls didn’t dress like they were looking for action. The worst thing I remember was kids smoking regular cigarettes in the bathroom. Was it a perfect time? No, but it certainly wasn’t like today! I think if we would acknowledge God’s existence and His Son’s salvation power and put that knowledge back in school it would help the environment tremendously. I home schooled and I’m glad I did because I saw where the school system was headed when God was removed.

We need to put prayer back in our homes and teach our children to pray. Encourage our children to pray for the bullies and those being bullied. Ask our children daily, who are we praying for today?” Have godly moral lessons with and pray over them daily. Yes. We should also put prayer back in schools.

This is a great article, as usual, Jamie. It is more than time for the decision from 1962 to be overturned. It is truly a travesty. We need to have prayer in our schools, period. It is no wonder that our nation is in such a free-fall, considering how God has been removed from nearly every institution in America, particularly the public schools. The middle school I retired from in 2021 has prayed in the school on Tuesday mornings for years! Some teachers, and some staff pray for our students, their families, the community, all of our schools and our superintendent and his staff. My name is still on the list for me to agree in prayer with them every Tuesday morning during the school year. Prayer is in a great number of schools across America! FATHER GOD I ask that Christian Bible class and prayer be instituted in our schools across America! I bind the angry and murderous spirits that have been unleashed across America! God is NOT a God of coincidence. The last 2 days, preceding today’s article from J.R., the nudge & burden was placed in my heart & mind to take time & drive to each of our local schools, sit outside and pray for God’s presence to envelope the entire school, staff and students inside. When possible or allowed, walk up to the building, lay your hands on it and pray. But pray God’s presence into and onto each school. When we are driving or walking by, stop and pray His holy presence. Bind the evil one and reclaim our schools for His glory. Pray for a change of heart for those inside who need Him. For those who are doing the bidding of hell….pray for their removal in anyway God deems necessary but also pray that removal of ungodly teachers will be replaced by teachers of godliness and righteousness.

When I attended school in the Garland ISD in the 60’s (graduating in ’69) there was a morning devotional, prayer then announcements over the school sound system before classes began every morning.
This was stopped in the 70’s by aclu much to the determinate of our public schools. When this happen, the schools turned into waring drug zones very rapidly!
When my children reached school age they attended an excellent private parochial school run by my home church Lavon Dr Baptist.
Virtually everyone that attended thru graduation received college or trade school scholarships. I know due to running sound system for graduation.

I remember many many years ago, when I was in elementary school and Madeline Murry won a lawsuit at the Supreme Court for the Murray v. Curlett lawsuit, which challenged the policy of mandatory prayers and Bible reading in Baltimore public schools. I was in the Montgomery County School System of Maryland at the time. We all were in a state of shock over it. I wondered, who is standing in the Gap. Praise God that today we have several groups standing in the Gap. What was taken away in a day, takes years to reclaim. Look at Roe vs Wade—how long has it taken to reverse that?
I agree with the premise of the article. We need to get prayer back into our schools if we want to see our nation turn back to our Lord. I can attest that over time some of my classmates later found the Lord. They were ones who had seen prayer in school. Not all of them came to know Jesus—but some did. I am thankful for that.
Prayer and Biblical Principles were used in the founding of our nation. The roots of prayer in our nation are deep. Biblical principles were taught and became a guide to some leaders. Prayer and Bible reading can be used by God to plant his word in our heart so we will be moved to turn our hearts back to God as a nation. This is not only something to pray about, but it will take our encouragement of our lawyers who have fought in the courts for our Christian rights to take up this challenge. Some are already fighting over the right to pray, but what about getting it back into the schools?
It will take MUCH prayer and a willingness to fight for our rights. It will also take God’s involvement as we confess the sin of our nation, and we ourselves cry out to the Lord. When our nation cries out to the Lord confessing sin, He will heal our land. (Based on II Chronicles 7:14).
It is time for us to follow the instruction in II Chronicles 7:14, seek God’s help, and for people to Stand in the Gap, through prayer and action.
Oh Father in the name of Jesus we need a breakthrough in our government schools to cast out all evil to protect the minds and spirits of all the children. Infill the students and teachers and administrators with the Holy Spirit to sing your praises in the classrooms and hallways as they lift holy hands unto you.

As a former public school teacher, I am saddened by the horror in our schools. I join with others asking God to put it to s vote nationwide to get prayer back in schools.

In my opinion… We need legislation where tax dollars follow each child. Parents should be able to choose which school their child attends and their tax dollars should follow them there. We need more Christian schools. We need churches to build and control Christian schools. At Christian schools children will have prayer and a good education hopefully without liberal indoctrination.
In one of our local high schools we have kids who identify with the ‘fur’ gender. They walk around the halls on all fours, hands and feet.

Oh my gosh! Amen! Oh Lord hear the cries of the children! Earlier This morning out of the blue, came the thought that after 1962 our nation started unraveling quickly. The sixties would usher in assassinations starting in 1963, Social norms were suddenly turned on their ear with the Sexual Revolution that has left many generations wondering what happened to the big promise by the “father of lies” that there would “no consequences” when their hearts and minds started suffering and becoming hardened. Families began to break apart like never before. Many Fathers left the home. Government seemed to lose direction and wisdom. Vietnam was calling young people who had no clear idea of what they were fighting and dying for and those who returned home, they were treated shamefully. Our Military that only a generation before helped save the nations in WWll was now mocked and disrespected. Rebellion was the new cool, and the Arts, Entertainment, and Media Sector were eager to help push the edge of sexual norms, and cynicism of family life. TV programming and movies started to change dramatically by the late sixties. Generations became divided. Abortion was ushered in. Many people didn’t know what it was and it was touted as a wonderful new freedom! We left Vietnam in shame and Coverups and media twisting became the norm. The snowball started rolling faster………the fruit was becoming more rotten, And the Church wasn’t prepared. Except for pockets of wonderful renewal during the Jesus Movement the momentum didn’t last. Most mainline Churches rejected Holy Spirit coming in due to He didn’t act the way we thought He should and true grounding didn’t happen. Move forward and we see the great acceleration to where we are now……….I was reminded of these things right before reading Jamie’s Article!
Lord we repent of walking away from Your Covenant, most no longer know our History in our nation. Lord, I repent. As Daniel wrote, Shame of face belongs to us! We need You. We are desperate Lord deliver us from evil. We Love You!

If you talk to people who went to public schools in the 1950’s they’ll tell you that there were gun clubs they belonged to that taught kids how to use them properly. There was also the Bible and prayer in those schools, a healthy respect for authority and discipline in the schools and at home. No school shootings. I am so grieved that schools teach kids ‘kindness & tolerance’ while snatching their Bibles from them during recess, & firing coaches for kneeling in prayer before sports games. They’re creating a generation of the confused, hopeless & angry people. We need mighty revival and the righteous to rise up and lead the way.

Prayer was not taken from schools we did nothing to stop having our freedom of speech mainly prayer. We talk but we do not PRAY. JUST DO IT to quote Nicki. I stood up & prayed in 1962 in my high school when told not to pray in Jesus’ name. Nothing happened. I called the bluff. When will we learn to die to self…gain heaven? Round same mountain & desert than 40 days in wilderness like the Savior overcoming temptation to let the devil win.

As I watched the news of the shooting in Uvalde, my heart broke for each child, who lost their life, each adult and the shooter. As tears rolled down my cheeks, I prayed for the parents and families who are struggling with the loss of their precious child and crying out to God, Why have you let this happen? Thanking God, that He is control and we can trust that His plan is perfect and this terrible tragedy will bring a positive change. A change that will change the hearts and minds of those blocking prayer in schools. Thanking God for the victory He is bringing as we all pray.
