Left-Wing Pastors Are Running for Congress. Here’s Their Record
A growing number of white Democratic congressional candidates are leaning on their clerical credentials to court Christian voters, but a closer look at their records reveals positions that conflict sharply with biblical teaching on life, marriage, and family. As the 2026 midterms approach, five clergy members and seminarians running under the Democratic banner are testing whether faith-infused language can bridge the gap between progressive policy and traditional Christian conviction.
Visit your state page to pray.
The strategy faces a steep climb. A May 2026 poll by Change Research found that only 25 percent of religious voters view the Democratic Party as friendly toward Christians, compared to 70 percent who said the same of Republicans.
From the Daily Caller:
Sarah Trone Garriott, James Talarico, Robb Ryerse, Anna Golladay, and Lindsay James are attempting to blend the language of “faith, freedom, and family” Christians with the increasingly progressive policies of the modern left.
White clergy members running for Congress as Democrats are a rarity. Since the 1970s, only three have been elected to the federal legislature, while numerous Republican clergy members have served in Congress. Currently, two Democrat members of Congress are clergy: Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock and Missouri Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver, both of whom are Black.
Rev. Sarah Trone Garriott, a Lutheran minister and current Iowa state senator challenging Republican Rep. Zach Nunn, said that the “Faith perspective” in politics does not reflect her values and the scriptures as she understands them, according to Religion News Service.
Garriott has criticized what she called “white patriarchy” at a United Methodist Church conference and described abortion as a fundamental right, dismissing those who support a six-week limit as a “small group of extreme, anti-choice Republican politicians.” She has also reportedly acknowledged that her identity shifts between her roles as a senator and a reverend, saying it “gets kind of mushy and kind of confusing” depending on “who’s paying me.” Seminarian James Talarico, the Democratic Senate nominee in Texas, has publicly described himself as a “Christian who hates Christianity” and claimed that God is non-binary, using the story of Mary’s virgin birth to argue for abortion access. He has also criticized efforts to display the Ten Commandments in Texas public schools, calling such moves “Christofascism.”
Arkansas Democratic nominee Robb Ryerse spent more than a decade as a pastor before founding a church affirming LGBT lifestyles and later became political organizer for Vote Common Good, a group aimed at pulling evangelicals away from the Republican Party. Tennessee nominee Anna Golladay was dismissed from her associate pastor role in 2019 after officiating a same-sex wedding, and her campaign platform includes gender-affirming health care, full abortion access, and decriminalizing illegal immigration. Iowa state representative and ordained Presbyterian pastor Lindsay James, running for an open congressional seat, previously published a campaign “confession” acknowledging her privilege as a “white, cis-gender, able-bodied, middle class, college educated woman” and cited her ordination to argue that women are “morally capable” of making their own reproductive decisions following the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade.
For Christians evaluating these candidates, the tension is not simply political but theological. The use of clerical titles and scriptural language to advance positions that contradict Christian teaching on life, marriage, and human dignity raises serious questions about what these candidates actually believe and who they represent. Scripture does not bend to fit political platforms, and believers are wise to evaluate candidates not by the credentials they hold but by the fruit their records produce. Pray for wisdom and discernment for Christian voters heading into the midterms, that they would weigh candidates carefully against the full counsel of God’s word rather than the selective use of religious language.

Lord Jesus, I pray for Your church across the United States of America. Strengthen pastors, leaders, and believers to remain faithful to Your Word. Keep churches from compromise and awaken them to shine as beacons of truth and hope. Unite denominations in love, so that together they proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ with boldness. May revival begin in the church and spread across the nation. Protect congregations from division and raise a generation of believers who live holy lives and love their neighbors as themselves. May God continue to Bless the United States of America! Amen.
“So I tell you, you are Peter. On this rock I will build my church, and the power of death will not be able to defeat it.” (Matthew 16:18, NCV)
Father,
Cause a change of heart in these people as You did for Manasseh and Sha’ul (Paul) so they won’t be lost as described in Jude.
Father we ask for salvation deliverance and freedom for Sarah Trone, Garriott James, Robb Ryerse, Anna Galladay and Lindsey James may they encounter you Lord Jesus and be delivered from all evil and wrong thinking, May they have dreams and visions of you Jesus at night and may anointing of the Holy Spirit break the heavy yoke of them. Don’t let them be decived any longer and don’t let them decive others either Father bring your truth to their hearts and minds in Jesus might name Amen
Not by accident that satan would find people (mostly women) who will lead people from God. Their souls may be beyond salvation only God knows. We the faithful servants of God need to seek God’s wisdom and guidance so as to not be tricked by their lies. I trust in God to take care of this evil scheme of satan. Stay strong against satan and his minions. 🙏😇🙏❤️
From the Word of God:
“I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word, be ready in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not endure sound doctrine, but they will gather to themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires, having itching ears, and they will turn their ears away from the truth and turn to myths. But be self-controlled in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, and prove your ministry.” (2 Timothy 4: 1-5, MEV)
Of course, moral wolfs know how to put on clerical garb. We, who know God’s Word, need to call their hand in this.
I’m from TX….please Pray that Talarico is exposed daily. Pray he is publicly caught in his compromised ways. He is a smooth talking individual who has proven repeatedly that his god…is not the God of truth. Pray that truth penetrate hearts all across America, that the light of God will turn on for many voters.
DEAR LORD GOD
PLEASE PROTECT AMERICA FROM YOUR ENEMIES. I ASK IN JESUS’ NAME.
AMEN
Oh Lord God how we need you to protect us from these demoniac forces that come to us in sheep’s clothing. Open our blinded eyes to see and vote for those standing for your Biblical Word.
We pray for biblical truth and the lies of those running for office be exposed. We pray too Father that these people would seek forgiveness and accept you as their Savior. In your precious name Jesus we pray. Amen.
The church of Laodicea thought that they had it all. They were rich and needed nothing. God responded by saying they were to be pitied and in his eyes they walked about naked. These so-called Democrat Christians may soon become “spit on the floor “
Our American political parties have become so polarized I can say without reserve that one could NOT profess Christianity and vote the Dem ticket. Plain and simple!!
